Re: Dacey Community Fields
I would be lying if I said the practice basket incident didn't bum me out a little bit. Yesterday changed everything for me though. I played through the 9 before work with a friend and ran into a group that heard of the course through friends. Not this forum, or Facebook, or DGReview, but word of mouth! The guys I met complemented the course, thanked all the volunteers for the work, and mentioned their skill with chainsaws. Come on down anytime guys. Skilled chainsaw operators always welcome.
An even bigger jolt to my motivation came from Greg. He as been busting his ass out there cleaning up fairways for the past few weeks and it really shows. Because of all the work he has done most of the 9 are ready for leaf blowing and weed wacking. We'll be tackling that work Sunday.
Greg and I teamed up last night and cut hole 16. That means we only have 3 fairways left to cut. Yep, 3 left. That's it. If we keep going at this rate all 18 will be cut by the end of the month.
We'll be starting at 9am on Saturday. If you own a leaf blower or weed walker we could use you assistance cleaning up the fairways. If you don't own either, we could still use your help out there. I'm planning to put the practice basket back up with additional security measures too. Send a nice message to the little bastards that tried to steal it.
Get down to Dacey Sunday and give us a hand. All 18 will be in before we know it!

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Pete and I spent yesterday tweaking a few of the holes. The hole 1 fairway has been cleaned up, widened, and pole sawed, the hole 2 green is now much bigger thanks to the moving of a big ol' brush pile, hole 17 was pole sawed, and hole 16 got a second round of cutting.
Three (3!!!) fairways left to cut. We're working on Tuesday and Wednesday this week starting around 4:30. I'm planning to cut hole 14 tomorrow and possibly hole 15 on Wednesday. That will leave only hole 13, which is on hold until 11 and 12 are completed by the second eagle scout candidate.
In order to get the new holes cut in I need help from experienced golfers. It was great having Tony as my second set of eyes for such a long run, but I need at least 1 other peson there while new holes are going in to make sure I don't starting cutting down trees all willy nilly.
Come down to Dacey and lend a hand. Rumor has it people who help out will be invited to a special event at the end of the summer...

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Anyone around to lend a hand (or two) at Dacey tomorrow? Big push going on to get the final few fairways cut!!!
It would be great to see some support from the DG community. I'm sure i'll see plenty of NEFA faces out there once the course is installed...it would be great to see some help out though!
PM me if you need directions or need any info.
Hope to see some of you out there tomorrow!

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Didn't make it to Dacey until 5:30 Tuesday night due to some very necessary chain saw repairing, but Brett and I still managed to cut 3/4 of hole 14. Another hour or so with a few people and its as good as done.
On friday a group of 35 high school athletes and 5 adult leaders will be working for a half day at Dacey. For the math impaired thats ~ 160 man hours, equal to about 8 weekends of work by a 4 man crew. THIS IS HUGE. It will make Dacey a completely different place and will save us a lot of work that needs to be accomplished before we begin setting the second 9 baskets.
In order to make sure this is plenty for the kids to do tonight is ALL HANDS ON DECK at Dacey. We need to open some storage space for the hole 18 brush, extend the hole 7 tee, cut a path from hole 7 to hole 8 (FINALLY), extend the hole 9 tee, finish hole 14, and maybe even start hole 15.
I am going to try to make it to Dacey for 4pm today and work my ass of until I can't see anymore. Get down here and give me and Kovo a hand. We're so close to a full course I can smell it.

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Lots to update on...
Last Thursday Mike, Rich, Kovo, Craig, and Jen helped finish cutting hole 14. Going to be a real sweet hole. Finishing 14 means we have only 2 holes left to cut. Depending on what we do this weekend, we should be able to get 15 cut.
On Friday we had a 40-person volunteer crew at Dacey. They did a ton of clean up work on 1-3 and moved the 3 massive brush piles from 18. That allowed us to mow the fairway and start in widening it.
Saturday Shevs and I began widening the second half of the fairway and putting the green in. We also took a little time and set the basket foundation!
Ryan began spraying the poison ivy on hole 4 Tuesday. He also widened the fairway a bunch. He'll be staying on that hole until its done which will be geat for flow.
There will be a work party on Sunday. We'll be starting around 8am and working on widening 18, cutting 15, and cutting the 4 tee extension. Things are really starting to come together out there. Come give us a hand to round Dacey out. The quicker we get the last few holes cut and clear, the quicker we can get the remaining baskets in the ground.

Jay/Anthony - I sent my friend who is new to DG the map to Dacey because he works in Holliston. Apparently he had some free time at work because 30 min later he sent me this:

When the course is finished, send me the completed hand drawn map and he'll convert it. He enjoys stuff like this.

I love the contributions coming from everywhere you read in NEFA-land. This little course map on Dacey is awesome but could show a little more "repect" for respect. 30 minutes wasn't enough to proofread or spell check??
Heh-heh. I enjoy stuff like this.

That's a nice photo of the course!
I'll try to upload it to the course page for Dacey on DGCR. BTW, I'm the adlacro who posted the review. I accept all backlashes but I tried to be objective and fair in reviewing the course. It looked great the last time I was out there 7/20/12
Thanks, Andrew L.

Thanks for the help with the map guys! Ryan told me he saw Greg out there Friday afternoon too. Thanks for the continued hard work Greg. It shows.
No backlashes on the review. Course is no where close to done so there is is definately work to be done. We appreciate feedback. We especially appreciate when people help us improve the course based on their feed back (laymans terms: come help us).
Last night after my round I put up the basket on 18. I plan to put a bunch more work into 18 tomorrow, on top of cleaning up and extending 7, finally putting the 7 to 8 path in, and clearing 16. By the end of the day we should be up to 11 playable holes, 10 with baskets.
Speaking of tomorrow, 8am start for work at Dacey. Only 2 fairways left to cut. So close!

Re: Dacey Community Fields
No more branches to the face going from 7 to 8. Trail has been cut. The tee for 7 also got pulled back about 25ft due to too many reports of near aces. Sorry guys. Cleaned up the bottom and left side of the fairway as well.
Big thank you to Greg for all of the contiuned hard work. On top of working with us, he cleared most of 5, 6, and 17 and now he's working on 10. Big reason we all don't have to walk through a ton of brush.
Sunday afternoon I met and worked with Austen, the second eagle scout planning a project at Dacey. To familiarize him with what we're doing we cut hole 15, which equates to ONE FAIRWAY LEFT TO CUT!!! Yessir. Austen will be cutting and clearing holes 11 and 12, so all we have to worry about is 13. Not a small worry though. Its looking like a real long par 4 right now.
We'll be working this Saturday this weekend. Little later start than usual, planning on 11 unless something changes. I'd like to put a basket on hole 10, finish clearing hole 16 and put a basket in there, and work on widening the hole 18 fairway.
If Sundays haven't worked for your schedule, here's an opportunity to come help on a Saturday. The more we put into the course, the more we get out of it. Plain and simple.

I wanted to again thank those who worked on the course to get the bridge on one up and the path cleared from 7 to 8. These have been updated and refelected on my review on DGCR.
I'd like to come help tomorrow. I'm very lousy with tools, but if you have gloves, I can do basic cleanup or other things to be involved. Sundays are never good for me, but I'm game for most Saturdays. 8 or 9 okay?
Thanks, Andrew L.

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Got a ton done today thanks to help from Mox, His Dudeness, and Andrew. Hole 4 exists! Cut back the tee a bunch more and cleared the green. Did some clearing along the side of the fairway to widen too. Once the green was set we took the time to set the basket concrete. There will be a basket up on 4 by Tuesday. No more weird walk to play 17 in place of 4.
Trying to ride the momentum, we'll be working again tomorrow. Start time of 10am. With the basket on 18 I'd like to widen/lengthen the hole to give us another playable hole. I'm also planning to put in the basket concrete on 10. 10 and 18 will still need some love, but by Tuesday we'll have 12 playable holes with baskets.

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Trow and I spent a few hours clearing more of hole 18 Sunday. Little bit more clearing and cutting and we should have it to par 3/4 length (eventually a par 5). We started work on a new trail to holes 17 and 18 as well.
Went down to Dacey after work with my girlfriend and put up the hole 4 basket. Thanks for the help Jen! Hole 4 is now playable with a basket. We still have a little cutting on the edges and around the tee, as well as a little PI removable to do, but it's a sweet hole. Way better for flow too.
Eagle scout number 2 will be starting holes 11 and 12 this weekend. Should be good to go with baskets by end of next weekend.
We'll be working Saturday AM this weekend, 8am - noon. My goal is to get the hole 10 basket in so we can add that to the course as well.

I have re-updated my review of Dacey (as of the work that was done 8/4) on DGCR to address concerns sent to me by someone. Thank you to the person that sent them to me, they have been addressed and the review changed.
I will not be getting to Dacey or any other course for a while with my schedule change coming up but hopefully I can make one more help day.
Sincerely,
Andrew

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Zero. The number of people who showed up to help last weekend. Not a single person.
Everything out at Dacey has been done by a very small group of people to this point and I can't expect the same 10 or less people to do everything. I've said it before, you don't need to work with during an organized work party to help out. There is plenty to clear off of the fairways already cut. Bring a weedwacker and a leaf blower and clean up fairways.
I have seen and heard of far more people playing at Dacey then helping out, and that's BS. If you have time to play, you have time to help. Everyone that works out there, including myself, is a volunteer.
If there is another poor turnout this weekend I'll be spending my time pulling the baskets. It's sad it has to come down to this, but at this point myself and the small number of other dedicated individuals who have worked insanely hard out there are being taken advantage of by everyone else. If I have to pull this baskets work at Dacey will be done for the year.
Frustrated,
Jay

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Obviously sounds like Jay Mello has reached the end of his patience?? Sounds like your core group has been working very hard to get the "Dacey Community Fields" course in the ground. However, some people have time for volunteer work and some people have to make time for it. Of course some people will wait until you are done and then enjoy all of your hard.
What good does it do you to "pull the baskets out" that are already in the ground? Sounds like a big step backwards. Who owns the baskets? Jay Mello or the town of Franklin?? Having some baskets in the ground allows your volunteer force the opportunity to throw a few holes after they are done working. Having some holes in the ground might be the draw you need to get some more volunteers.
Keep up the good fight Jay. Hopefully, the personal satisfaction you receive upon completion will be enough to make it all feel worth it

Jay noooo!
I'm sorry I haven't been able to make it out there since I moved, the combination of buying a house that needs more work than anticipated, living over an hour away, vacations, and being busy at work have all culminated at the same point. I haven't thrown a disc or gone biking in a month! Once I paint the house and replace some trim I'll be able to make it down there, at least for a few days after work. Keep it up man, and we'll celebrate all the work you've done so far next week up at Baxter!

Jay..def keep em in the ground..the more people yoo have playing the more chances ya have for new volunteers..
never get over whelmed yourself..you are in fact a volunteer..just take a lil break refocus on growing volunteers through new avenues...look at all the course threads..they are dead.
eventually you will be satisfied with the course to a certain extent..as no matter what you will always want the absolute best the land/course can offer... something harder to achieve then a 1000 rated round
IMO you guys are right on track..heck ya have baskets..lol
I would love to get down there..but as you know my time is taken already..I very much look forward to being one of those people who enjoy the work you and your crew have done
hang in there..and thank you

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Agreed with said above.
I'd love to be out helping more, but I can't get back until the 25th and Sundays are never good for me.
Wasn't that eagle scout supposed to be helping you?
Chin up, Jay

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Hey Jay ..
I get the frustration... I would be too.
No excuses for people... There are lots of people in NEFAland that could have put in at least an hour in the past 6 months. Whatever ... there is nothing you can do .. certainly don't let it ruin your day. Then your lettin them get to you. Easier said then done. Bottom line, remember why you are doing the work... from working with you, I think you enjoy the SELF satisfaction from the results of YOUR hardwork. What you have already done is amazing and will be around for so many to enjoy for years to come. I also know you see the completion of the 18 baskets and fairways in your sight and want it completed. I predict you will see more people help out as the summer comes to an end and the fall begins. If nothing else I will be be ready to lend a hand next week as I am driving back from NC this week.

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Just a quick post now cause I'm running out the door for work.
1) Thanks for all of the support and encouragement;
2) Austen Shumway (2nd Eagle Scout) completed hole 11 this week. It's awesome; and
3) Work starts Saturday at 7:30. Be there or be square (which doesn't fly as well as a disc).

Re: Dacey Community Fields
Lots to update on. Here we go…
On August 11th, Austen Shumway began his Eagle Project, the construction of hole 11. By the following Wednesday, the hole was completely cut out and dragged off and a basket was installed. Hole 11 is a nice, long, uphill par 4 that definitely stands out as one of the best on the course right now. Congratulations to Austen on completing an outstanding hole and man...y thanks to him and his very hardworking team of volunteers.
Saturday, August 18th I was joined by T.M., Pete V., and Mox for some work at Dacey. While T.M. took care of the massive hang-up over hole 15, the rest of the crew finished cutting and clearing 16. Once T.M. was complete with his masterful removable of our problem tree, the group combined forces to clear 15. In addition to this work, in the past several weeks Pete T. has cleared the majority of accumulated brush from hole 18, and a combination of Kovo and town-organized volunteers have cleared off hole 10. Ray W. (another Franklin area boy scout) also began working on the clearing of 14 last week. Big thanks to everyone who has stepped up in the past few weeks. Your hard work has kept this project moving.
So, for those keeping score, we now have 15 playable holes at Dacey. There are baskets installed on 1-9, 11, 17, & 18, and temporary targets on 15 and 16. Unless you play with someone who knows their way around Dacey, 15 and 16 will be hard to find.
Major items on our to do list for this year are the cutting and clearing of holes 12 & 13, finishing clearing hole 14, extending hole 18 back to par 4 distance, installing foot paths between holes 11 – 17, and installing baskets on holes 10, and 12-16. Once this stuff is done, we’ll have a full 18 hole course.
We’ll be working this Sunday to whittle down the aforementioned list. 7am start time, but feel free to come by later if you like sleeping in. I would like to cut hole 13, install a basket on hole 10, and work on some of the access paths for the holes. Potential for work Monday AM as well, but it will be based on progress made on Sunday AM and volunteer interest.
After every work party at Dacey there is obvious, significant improvement to the course. Come help us bring legit, challenging 18-hole disc golf to metrowest!
