My dog will be with us, you try anything funny, he will bite

Very cool to be moving forward on this, as much as I like Tully, a course 3 miles from my house instead of 45 minutes is sweet.

I had the MOD move the thread back to here as we are past needing design input

Big thanks to Derek,Rob for coming out yesterday..we got all of the front 9 ready for ACOE destruction

Rob keep working on temp signage, hole work descriptions, marking of trees we may have missed or need to be more visible

pole sawing, debris piling will be the first major work waive until the rangers crush a cut

great times out in the woods..always fun when the weather is nice and the crew is cool

rob I will go hole by hole if needed for future work descriptions but I think you know the dealy just as well

we will get the back nine marked eventually but for now the front 9 is the main focus!!!

We're on the same page, I've got a good understanding of what needs to be done, I plan to spend a lot of time out there in the weeks and months to come, we've got a few good workers on our crew, we'll get this banged out.

UPDATE Sunday 10-7-12

Spent the afternoon up @ otter brook, all signage is in, clear waterproof signage indicating tee pad and directional signs to the next hole are in. AM tee off areas and lanes are also marked.

( A blind man could follow this layout, it is that well marked) all trees that are marked for death are clearly painted and waiting for ACOE chainsaws. In the meantime, pole sawing and clearing is our priority, I will be out there most afternoons if anyone wants to stop by and take some frustration out on trees with a bat or just check it out. I'm telling you right now, this course is going to be a gem.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

I'm going to try and get out there most mornings. Friday morning for sure, and those weekdays when I don't want to go to the gym, I'll head over a thin things out some more. Thanks for the to do list Titan. I'll drop the ACOE a note just to tell them about the tree, and the signage we put up. Just want to keep them up to date.

UPDATE 10-8-12

Spent a few hours yesterday, smashing sucker branches on holes 1-3, the area that joins #3 and #8 is sweet, my main concern right now is knocking all branches that could poke an eye out, they are everywhere, but are mostly dead and come off easy.the area that joins #3 and #8 is on a natural ridge that is awesome, can see some benches being set up and having that be a hang out for all you folks who like to take "breaks" during a round. Will be out there this afternoon from 4-dark.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

on that note, anybody have a gas powered or electric pole saw they could let us borrow? I've got a good one that's manual, the amount of work that needs to be done is incredible, anything gas powered will help speed this up.

rob,

suggestion
if and the word is def IF the ACOE will allow you to use such a tool...maybe IDK they should but(ifs and buts..lol) they may not allow it..esp if you do not wear they proper gear helmet, hearing, eye, chaps even..or sign the volunteer waiver form most ACOE properties have..if they have one for volunteers..

that said..if all that is kosher then they will provide one or can ship one in from another DAM as most swap tools ect ect...it is vital someone knows how to run and maintain it though..as ya still need to sharpen, oil, gas and not put much weight on those things just let the saw do the work kinda thing..(you may already know all this)

the problem would then be having them around to provide access to tools...
and someone to return it to..

welcome to ACOE DG work...lol

if all that checks out..I agree it would be best to use one 1 million %%%..finding one will be tough unless ya can connect with a cool local..maybe that guy we met up there might have further connections outside nefaland...I am gonna approach a local landscape crew around here for access to one for the holtshire road project..they cost 500-700 bucks so buying one is an investment and I hope to one day accumulate tools as I have not cared too much about it..cuz most of my work they were provided..at Tullz ect ect now that I am freestyling tools are an issue for sure..

edit..also some pole sawing is moot as when they cut destruction of sorts will happen branches will fall, others will be hung ect ect so mostly vital pathways, walking to next hole small cutting is more important then actual "fairway"/hole trimming areas they won't be destroying at this current stage

a weedwacker with a saw blade to start the cart road access plan would be kinda cool to get done and might be able to convince them to let you do..more helpful of sorts as you can then gain access to drive up them when doing work..I also suspect once we are past that "idiot" stage we spoke of a key to the gate would be granted to one of you..as I had a key to tullz..now Billmer has it cuz he is an actual ranger and active DG'er

I went over to chat with the ACOE folks this morning, and they have given us official permission to use power toolsI There is a form that people who are using chain saws to sign before we start, but this should make things go quite a bit quicker. Rob, give me a call so i can get this to you so i can get your John Hancock.

Also, there are a couple of changes we need to make with the letter of agreement which I should be able to take care of this week. And I also signed a "volunteer" form. I don't think we all need to sign it, but they said we should keep track of our hours and dates when we work. I'll put together some sort of online form to keep track of this, but they said it's critical to keep track of those hours.

Most Fridays, with the exception of this coming Friday, I will be out there if anybody is inclined to come by, shoot me a pm. With the approval of powertool usage by ACOE, we should be able to make tremendous progress, my goal is to have the rough cut of all 18 done by the start of the year.

Reminder about the club meeting Friday Nov 2nd at 8:30 at Elm City. For those of you who can't make but would like to offer some help we are signing up for workdays: Nov 11th, 18th, and 25th. All Sundays, starting at 10 am till when ever. if you can make the meeting, let me know here or via email (ddecoste@ne.rr.com) and I'll sign you up for a day. We really need pole saws, weedwackers w/saw attachments, and lopers. We also need lots of "backs" to move logs and downed trees off the fariways.

If you have a chain saw I will have the waiver for on the 2nd, and on the workdays.

Titan you will flip when you see how much has been crushed! ACOE giving us greenlight to power tools was awesome!

This SUnday 1st major organzied workday, multiple chainsaws and many strong backs, will get some major work done. Any and all support is needed and greatly appreciated, a few of us have been hitting it when we can but it is slow going now that it is dark so early, finding balance between, work, family and disc, always challenging.

A solid effort put in today by 6 volunteers, got some good work accomplished.
Here's an update on how things are progressing:

Hole 1: Completely cut, including alt tee placement, fairways mostly cleared, remaining work is cosmetic, hole is playable.

Hole 2: Completely cut including alt tee placement, fairways need to be cleared, tons of polesawing to be done.

Hole 3: Started cutting today, (this hole isn't dense forest and should clear realtively quickly)

Hole 4: Untouched, fairways marked

Hole 5:Completely cut, alt tee placement needs to be established, fairways mostly cleared, temporary footbridge in, remaining work is cosmetic, hole is playable.

Hole 6: 90% Cut, remaining work is fairway clearing, limbing up trees, bridge

Holes 7-18: Untouched, fairways marked

A major access path has been cut and cleared, designing and building a course is a TON of work but very enjoyable and fun to see it slowly take shape. Next Work Days are the 18th and 25th of November, anybody who feels moved to take a walk out there, signage is up for 1-9, it flows smoothly, a few of us meet up on Friday mornings and bust out some work, any amount of time and work given is greatly appreciated.

I have a new album that I will update with progress pics, here's the link.

I'll pass, I've already got a thankless day job, I'm a worker bee, not interested in politics or BS in the least, that being said I absolutely intend on applying for the $1500 large grant, it would go a long way to gettting the needed remaining 9 baskets, maybe Derek? He's better at that kind of thing than me.

Only 7-9 remain untouched, it's getting there, hope to see some folks this Sunday 10 AM Otter BRook State PArk route 9, park in lot by gate and walk down the road, you'll hear the saws.
