Pisgah State Park

Post by Derek DeCoste »

I had a great meeting with the Friends of Pisgah organization last night regarding disc golf, and they are all for putting in a course in the park. They even suggested a certain area of the park they though would work (parking, away from ATVs, hiker, bikers, and horse type people).

The big hurdle is going to be getting permission from the state (Envir. asessement, permits, insurance etc.). Anyone out there in NEFA land know any government type folks in NH. I've talked to the parks and rec. heads (Phil Bryce (phil.bryce@dred.state.nh.us), and Brad Simpkins (brad.simpkins@dred.state.nh.us) Email em and tell them you want a course in Pisgah ;-) ) in NH, and Brad has played before (so that's a plus). I really just looking for a contact who might now how to jump through the necessary hoops and navigate getting approval from the state parks and rec. people.

Obviously this is VERY VERY preliminary, so for now I'm just looking for help working through the maze that is the NH state Government.

Yikes, I think you are getting your response, I'll help out however I can, navigating politcs is not my strength but something I should probably learn, that being said, once Otter Brook is green lighted I will be spending the vast majority of my free time out there.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

is there 2 sides to this park? a hinsdale side and a near keene side?

or is it just the entrance off the road leading to Bratt VT?

The trail head that the Friends of Pisgah seemed to think would work the best is (if you are looking at the map) off of Old Swanzey road. They said that area has parking, isn't used much by the public, and was recently logged a bit.

The problem with this is the park is state owned, and I talked to the parks and rec people from the state in December (just to follow up) and they said that things at "Pisgah are changing, and the usage of the park is being re-evaluated". Translation, we aren't doing squat any time soon.

It is a cherry of a spot though. HUGE acreage, and it borders three towns.

To answer your question though Titan, it doesn't border Bratt. It's about halfway between Bratt. and Keene.

yeah I figured they had many entry locations..when riding home from Austine I said to cupcake wow this place goes all the way over to here I doubt this was the place Derek was talking about...well anyways a different direction and not doing much could be a good thing though as DG can be pitched as not much needed to maintain..but in time the crowd in Keene will branch out and search for new locations..good one to keep on the back of the brain

or maybe that other side near bratt would be a good option as it would link us to bratt/snh better at least DG wise

I took disc golf to the Friends of Pisgah over a year ago now, and they liked the idea. They just got a new head park manager, they are doing lots of trail work, however the State of NH has pretty much stopped funding anything to do with parks. "live free or die" I guess.

With a new park manager we could re-examine this but I would really like to see more bodies working on OB before we start to tackle another project. KDGC has quite a bit on our agenda for the upcoming year, so this may need to be put on the back burner for the time being. Still would LOVE to see a course at Pisgah, but between getting tee boxes in at OB, starting the back 9 at OB, and redesigning GG I don't think we'll lack for stuff to do this summah.
