Coaching

Post by Sam Henderson »

Greetings,
I have only been playing disc golf regularly for about five or six months although I have a 6.5+ year background in ultimate so I am used to throwing plastic. I think I have become a pretty good player in that time but that steep learning curve and rapid improvement that have been fun to experience have slowed down and almost leveled off. I guess what I am looking for is someone who would be willing to spend some time with me to help correct some bad habits, polish the things I do correctly, and let me pick their brain about discs, practice habits, tourneys, etc. I am tall and lefty so someone similar would be ideal but not a huge deal. I would be happy to compensate you for your time with money/beer/hugs. This could be a one time deal or a longer term happening. I live in SE MA so my home course is Borderland but am happy to go to where the help is. Thanks and toss me a PM if you might be interested in passing your DG knowledge down to a younger generation. Naturally, heckling this thread is also encouraged.

I give lessons at Maple Hill.

Mike Dussault taught me how to make putts and is a fantastic teacher/coach for disc golf.

Like Sam, my game has hit a plateau and I could definitely use some advice or coaching to advance my game. Specifically getting more distance on my drives and making better shot selections and choices. I'm getting frustrated because I'm not seeing progress. Has anyone out there been where I am now and can offer suggestions?

Remember the thing about distance: It matter far less than you'd imagine it does when you have a rock solid up and down game.
Yes, distance gets you to make long carry shots over water, but being able to put a fairway driver, thru the woods, in a guys pocket from 250' is going to be a key to progress.

If indeed you want to become better at disc golf, practice from 200' and in. It's where you need to make only two throws, every time. One throw up and one throw in........

......and it all starts with a good well balanced stable base

And the secret thing about getting a fairway driver in a guys pocket from 250 is that its actually a mid range!

Every PGA tour golfer has a swing coach. Most have personal trainers and sports psychologists. The majority of disc golfers seem to be against spending money to get better. Most other sports are different, players want to get better, they pay for lessons. I see so much potential in the lower rated players in my area. With proper coaching, I bet they could raise their rating by 30 points in 12 months. I'm lucky to be able to play with Brinster all the time, as he basically coaches me as I try to get better. IF you want to get better, go find a coach/high level player and pay them to teach you. It will pay off.
