I'm partial to Texas Best. Like Jesse said though, you can beat Peter Lugars.

Re: BBQ Sauce
Sweet Baby Ray, I love that stuff, Charly Biggs of Maine is pretty damn good too, I wish it was socially acceptable to do shots of sauce, I would and then chase it with half a rack of ribs.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

Sweet baby rays has the bad high fructose crap. I was reading about it in men's health. Weber bbq is a little better cause it uses real molasses instead of the artificial stuff. They have different varieties.

Making your own is super simple and usually gives you a better result as to how spicy and sweet you want it.

I go with KC Masterpiece, the one with the Minotaur on the front. They are one of the few that still use molasses as the base sweetner instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup

Re: BBQ Sauce
Mine, which is based on Weber's online recipe (http://www.weber.com/grillout/recipes/p ... -back-ribs). By the way, you can't go wrong with any of their recipes - I've tried many of them. Back to the sauce: I add and/ or exclude a few things and finagle the proportions to my taste. All the processed crap you get from the store is well, crap - additivies, preservatives, High f'd up corn syrup, etc. And the natural ones are over-priced - pay $5 - 6 for 6 - 8 oz of ketchup, vinegar, sugar, and Worcestershire? I don't think so. make your own - it takes 5 minutes - mix the ingredients, simmer a few minutes and boom. That gives me a perfect Spring/ Summer CTP prize idea - bbq kit w/ the Mergz Rub & Sauce. Let the jokes begin...

Vinegar based home-made south carolina style.
Sweet Baby Rays is good on Bubba burgers when you're drunk off your ass and you don't care what you are eating.

Re: BBQ Sauce
What about some good home-made BBQ rubs?
Put together a dry mix of salt, pepper, garlic, cumin, paprika, brown sugar, white sugar, and ginger ... did some chicken thighs with this that came out fantastic

Re: BBQ Sauce
From a post I wrote in 2010 in the Grinds my Gears thread (once I saw this thread I immediately thought of this post. Instantly remembering posts from 3 years ago is probably not a good sign of mental status):
All summer I see it on picnic tables. It sounds southern = I look like I know what I'm doing. Yeah, it tastes good. So do lollipops. Doesn't mean either are great.
If you want to step up the game (without making your own because that sounds like a lot of work and that doesn't fit my M.O.), I'd still recommend...
- Cains Naturally Delicious
- Bullseye (yeah, it's made by Kraft, and is close to Sweet Baby Ray's... but doesn't contain HFCS)
- Gates - Sweet & Mild (order online)
- Go down to BT's Smokehouse next time you're at Hyland and buy a bottle of locally made goodness from the BBQ Gods of New England.
- Stubb's (if you like a blend of vinegar, sweet, and peppery).
ANYONE who tries to push Sweet Baby Ray's for grilling. It's garbage.
So this company goes out there, figures out how to put brown sugar in Heinz Ketchup, somehow make the first ingredient High Fructose Corn Syrup and end up with a product that's yet another cheaply made paint-by-number BBQ sauce. But hey, let's put a nice story of two guys one night at a BBQ comp and how they came up with some masterpiece while chatting over a beer. Please...![]()
Yet because it sounds southern you somehow get BBQ street cred. for using it. Get over yourselves. At least if you want brown sugar in ketchup, do your body a favor and buy Naturally Delicious BBQ sauce from Cains. It has no High Fructose Corn Syrup and supports Cains which is a local company less than 5 min from the Devens course!!!
And if you really want to grill some good BBQ, go online and hook yourself up with some Gates BBQ sauce. That's where the action is.

Re: BBQ Sauce
Making a simple BBQ sauce takes about 5 minutes - you can do it while the meat is grilling and have plenty of time to spare. Use the Weber site as a guide, trust me.
