Devens Workdays: The General - May 14 & May 17 (TEE PADS!)

Post by Luke Adolph »

Please note that this weekends work days will be condensed into Sunday only.

Collectively, we have absolutely killed it during our last three work weekends. It really has been amazing to see so many people working together to build something special. Since the baskets are in and the course is getting a lot of play we would like to take care of some of the safety concerns before the ground is really frozen!

On Sunday, we would like to complete the following:

1 - Create a level walking path along hole 2s fairway
2 - Create a level walking path along hole 3s fairway
3 - Build solid steps mid fairway on hole 5
4 - Build solid steps mid fairway on hole 8
5 - Build solid steps down from 11s tee
6 - Create a better path from hole 8s basket to hole 9s tee

Does anyone have a bladed weed whacker? We need to weed whack a path up the following fairways 6/9/13/14

Lots of pole sawing to do all over the course.

Some small cutting on certain holes -
Hole 9 we need to take out a small tree near the basket
We are going to cut all of the small stuff around hole 12s baskets within 30 feet

Brush dragging - EVERYWHERE (we should be doing this as we play our casual rounds as well)

I'm going out after work to do a little prep work for this weekend. Anyone available to pitch in? Basically I just want to make sure the path to the work areas are clear.

I'll be there at 4:15

Got lots of the path cleared this afternoon.

I'll be back out there tomorrow if anyone wants to help. Sometime between 415-430. Easy work (raking, clipping, some low pole sawing)

We have a big crew in the works for Saturday. Let's start this process off with a bang. Who else can give the course some love this weekend?

Additional Work Day Details:

As you probably know, we will be breaking ground on our new course this weekend. We have a very busy couple of days planned and we wanted to thank you in advance for donating your time and effort to our new course!

We will begin work each day at 9am and work until a lunch break around noon. Lunch will be pizza/soda/water (BYO Beer) provided by Devens DGC. We will also have some water/gatoraid for during the day as well. We will resume work after lunch and work until around 5pm.

Meet in the usual parking lot and we will drive over to the work central area near new hole 3 (need trucks!)

If you show up late, you can follow the new path that leads to the existing course’s hole 4 tee and you will see us working in that area. This path begins after the fence on old hole 1 and meanders up below 2 & 3. Follow the sweet sounds of chainsaw! You can also call us on our cell phones – numbers below.

Things you can bring:

Work Gloves
Chainsaws
Pole saws
Hand saws
Loppers
Shovels
Picks
Rakes
PICK UP TRUCKS

The focus of this weekend is to clear fairways. We will go over the details of what should and should not be cleared on each hole before we begin. During the day if you have questions, call Ken or Luke. A few notes:

- Please cut everything LOW TO THE GROUND. I know it’s a little more difficult but its better than having to cut twice or having someone trip and get impaled.

- We will be looking to border walkways between holes using the thinner trees we cut.

- Selected holes may use logs to mark a route from tee to green and also prevent hillside erosion.

- Cut material wants to be dragged well off the fairways and left in a natural deadfall state. We are not looking to create large deadfall piles. No burning allowed.

- We may collect some cuttings into road accessible areas for later chipping – use around green and walkways.

- The fairways are marked with red flags/tape. We are cutting everything inside of the flags with the exception of trees with red tape. Most anything outside the flags will stay unless directed otherwise. If it’s questionable, ask Ken or Luke.

- We will try to create level areas for tees, all natural for now.

We will be working on holes 1, 2, 3, 17 & 18. Once complete this will make a nice 9 hole loop using holes 1-4 of old course or 23 hole course using all 18 old holes! We plan on installing bucket targets and having these holes "playable" by the end of the weekend.

Ken can be reached at 781-526-5080 (text or call)
Luke can be reached at 617-905-6574 (text or call)

Again, thank you!

For those working on the course this weekend, wear pants not shorts. Short sleeves on top so you don't overheat.
Hiking boots/shoes or work boots will offer the best footing/stability as well and DON'T FORGET WORK GLOVES AND A BOTTLE OF WATER.

Just looking out for y'all

Wow. This is how we roll at Devens.

We had 26 strong today!! Some brand new faces and old workhorses (and you know who you are). I was hoping to clear 5 holes this weekend. We cleared 5 1/2 holes today!! We mowed down fairways like a machine. It was beautiful to see. More to come tomorrow. Rest up.

We finished 8 holes over the weekend and installed some of the original buckets used for the first 18. A group of us played 1-4 and 15-18. Birdies on 1, 2, 3, 16, 17 and 18.

Great work everyone.

Here is a taste. Yes, dual fairways. We will have more pics up on FB later today.

Did anyone happen to find my yellow handled hammer on hole 1, near the green? It was with the bucket pole, but someone moved the pole and I never found the hammer. I hoped someone grabbed it on the walk out.
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

Lots of people have asked what they can do to help out with the new course! Our next workdays are scheduled for October 19-20 but in the meantime I have posted a list of things that need to get done on the current 8 hole loop (1-4, 15-18).

The list is in the first post of this thread. When a task is completed please let me know so I can take it off the list.

Thanks,
Luke

Hey Hillfolk!

Thank you so much to those of you who have donated to our basket sponsorship program either individually or in a group. Its greatly appreciated!

We have commitments on 6 baskets at the moment, which is great! We plan on ordering in the beginning of November to keep with our plans of a December basket installation.

Our current course funds will be going towards our yearly insurance and other operational costs as well as a starter fund for some excellent tee pads next year! We really need your help in order to get 18 baskets purchased and installed by December. Grab 3 friends, put in $100 bucks each and savor the good karma you will receive when you play YOUR new course.

Please comment here or email devensdiscgolf@gmail.com with your sponsorship information. We are looking for commitments ASAP and payments by 11/1.

Thanks!

Hello Devens Disc Golf Players. Another work weekend has arrived – Oct. 19/20. We will be clearing holes 5-10 this weekend. We will meet in the parking lot at 9 am to start each day. Bring the following if you can:

- Chainsaws (TM will not be with us this weekend, so we could use all others)
- Weedwacker for low brush clearing
- Polesaws
- Handsaws
- Gloves for all carrying materials from fairways
- Rake/shovel for tee box clearing/leveling

Holes 5-10 are located in the far corner away from the course entrance. To get there we will drive the outer road past current hole 12. Either take a right at the path before the condo or continue. If walking, go past current hole 6 like you were going to hole 7 but continue straight down that path. Hole 5 is straight. Hole 10 is left at the fork. Holes 6-9 are right of hole 10. Listen and you will find the work crew.

We will begin work each day at 9am and work until a lunch break around noon. Lunch will be pizza/soda/water (BYO Beer) provided by Devens DGC. We will also have some water/gatoraid for during the day as well. We will resume work after lunch and work until around 5pm.

A few notes:

- Please cut everything LOW TO THE GROUND. I know it’s a little more difficult but its better than having to cut twice or having someone trip and get impaled.

- We will be looking to border walkways between holes using the thinner trees we cut.

- Cut material wants to be dragged well off the fairways and left in a natural deadfall state. We are not looking to create large deadfall piles. No burning allowed.

- We may collect some cuttings into road accessible areas for later chipping – use around green and walkways.

- The fairways are marked with orange flags/tape. We are cutting inside of the flags with the exception of trees with orange tape. Most anything outside the flags will stay unless directed otherwise. If it’s questionable, ask Ken or Luke.

- We will try to create level areas for tees, all natural for now.

We plan on installing bucket targets and having 14 holes "playable" by the end of the weekend.

Ken can be reached at 781-526-5080 (text or call)
Luke can be reached at 617-905-6574 (text or call)

Remember, hole sponsorships are $400 and can be shared by up to 4 people. See Luke or Ken for info.

Completed 2 1/2 more holes today, so 3 1/2 holes to go. We have averaged 7 holes cleared per weekend. We had ~16 people on Saturday and 20 people today. Great support. Great progress. On track to have baskets in by December. Woohoo!
