The Best I Have Ever Seen
I am sitting here watching the snow change to rain, then back to snow again. Its a sure sign that mur disc golf days are gonna be limited for the near future.
I had a blast playing NEFA tourneys this year and some some incredible disc golf played. It got me to thinking about some shots I have witnessed over the years. So I thought on a snowy night I would ask all of you:
What are the 5 best shots you have ever seen. With your own eyes,no folklore please.
Here are mine
5. Paul Heaton shanks his drive on hole 15 West Thompson. Leaving a 300' approach from behind the trees...NAILED IT!
4. Kaz steps up to hole 11 at West T, says "I'm feelin Acey", and Boom he nails the ace.
3. Steve Brinster, Hole 1 at Buff. Pumps a drive that stayed 15 feet off the rocks,15 feet in the air toward the hill. Then it seemed to gain speed, traveled up the hill and just hyzered out a touch as it slid parallel to the pin, maybe 30 out. Not an ace, but man was it pretty.
2. Taylor Maslowski on the General, I dont know the hole # but it was a par 5. First shot left him in the bushes 300 feet from the hole, over a hill, blind anny. He nailed it for the EAGLE.
1. Paul Heaton (again) Pyramids hole 18 Gold (old 18) over the parking lot for an Ace to win a grudge match...I step into the box and also aced it! BaBooomski!

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
Numbers 2-5 are not that amazing, but #1 was a clear winner.
5- early on as a newb every shot I saw bob belmore throw was folklore incarnate. He'd throw these old XL's on a hyzer-flip and they'd go almost 400 feet with no run up.
4-Only time I saw a good Epic thrown overhand (not that unique but it blew my mind at the time)- Roger Gagnon threw it at hole 19 Pye and was down level with the brown shed.
3-I threw a shorty ace at Pye this fall. Hole 15 for my first legit ace and $199 bucks.
2-Tapping out on hole 6 at Flat Rock I almost got hit by a disc (hit the tree next to basket). I turned around to tell the group behind us to hold off- but they weren't there- they were on the tee pad. The disc was one of Nick Eco's destroyers he just threw over 458 ft. uphill.
1- Devan labelle's 2 at the AM side 2 years ago. Maple hill hole 18, not just for difficulty/luck factor, but watching how that thing went in from a vertical angle- along side 100+ other screaming golfers as the lead card came in was great.

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
First one that comes to my mind was Ed Hovestadt's roller ace.
Don't remember where it was but it was a downhill tunnel roller shot. About 225' roller down the fairway right at the basket, ten ft in front of the basket it hit a root, jumped up and ching in the basket it went. Nice ace Ed !
My most memorable shot Sunday AM league at Flatrock(of course) Hole #7 (hanging basket), tee shot sucked, hit early tree and landed 25' off the tee on the right side of the fairway. I pulled out my seasoned Champion Wraith, threw it up the left side of the fairway as hard as I could. We couldn't see the basket but we heard the smash of the chains. I think I was with Bob Penny and Mr & Mrs Streeter ??

Jason Southwick Pyramids hole 16 silver. Blind ace. We thought Vinny was hiding in the shed and threw it in the basket. Nope, just a great shot.

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
Okay, I'm going to simply post as I remember them...
Devon's 2 on 18 was amazing to watch, I was actually a caddy on the card!
One that sticks out for me is a shot Steve Brinster threw in the final round during the 2013 Warwick Championship.
The layout, was blue to blue, hole 15 (I'm fairly sure? It's a long par 4 dogleg to the left, very tight on your second shot, especially if not placed well in the fairway)
Steve was already winning by a bit, but on this hole, his drive landed short and left, wedged up against a tree. Steve took a long while to simply get into a position to throw because of the awkwardness of the lie. From my point of view, he was wedged up against a tree, and had a few more sandwiching him in, and the only real play was to pitch back to the fairway for a 4. Instead, almost out of nowhere, Steve pops a roller down, directly THROUGH all of the trees in his way. I watched this disc roll about 375 feet, dodging every tree, climbed a small WALL, and continued left to roll directly under the basket. The gallery went nuts. Yup, that's one of the best.

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
My personal top five (mostly the Bobby and Steve show):
5. A labor day round at Fairfield University with the Frizzaks and JDB back in 2006? Last hole, Bobby throws a newish Pro Wraith from the back line of the end zone along the road. It goes over the hill that has Hole 1's basket, turns to the right, and comes to rest about 50' from the old location of Hole 2.
4. First round of this year's FDR Fool's Fest playing Steve Brinster, Charlie Holmgren, and Chris Scofield. Charlie has the box on Hole 4 and throws a bad shot, and starts calling himself names. It gets stuck in Steve's head and he unexpectedly yanks a shot a bit to the right and gets stuck early behind a tree. The obvious shot is to pitch down to the edge of the ravine and then up to the yellow basket. Nope. Steve throws a sky roller through two trees, it lands and rolls up to 15' from the basket. Easy three.
3. Second hole of the 2013 GHDGO Safari Seven. Bobby up by two strokes on Paul McBeth with the box. Playing from the bottom of hole 1 back up the hill to a temp basket near Hole 1's regular tee. Flat star wraith smashed to within 6" of the basket. McBeth plays a big hyzer and comes up short in the OB. Tourney over.
2. 2011 Eric C. Yetter Cup at Tyler State Park. Steve lays down an 89 over 27 holes all in C position to tie Big Jerm. They push on the first two playoff holes. On the third hole (one of the best par 5s you'll ever see), Steve goes OB by less than a foot, while Jerm stays in bounds. Both play shots down to the bottom of the fairway, with Jerm in the clear and Steve bunched up. Steve then throws an x-cal to within 60' and Jerm lands within 25'. Steve nails a HUGE putt to force Jerm to make his for the win ... which he does. But Steve's escape shot was unbelievable.
1. 2011 GHDGO Safari Seven. On the Hole 18 tee to Hole 1 basket, Steve bombs a shot to within five feet of Hole 18's short position (a great shot in and of itself). But he then proceeds to demolish a star wraith that perfectly follows the road straight then right and then straight again to land on the grass in bounds (where good drives land from Hole 1's regular tee). He then almost throws in an aviar for the eagle (which could almost be considered an albatross as no one else even took a four). Three greatest throws in succession I've ever seen.
Numbers 3 and 2 are on film courtesy of Disc Golf Monthly. Number five can be verified by JDB, Will Kriewald, Bard, and Sjur. Number 1 can be verified by Jesse C., Jason Dore, and Leslie, and everyone else who all witnessed it.

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
Playing singles league at Maple hill on the Blue course.
It was Nick Eco, Heenan, Yaskis and myself.
Heenan made an ace on a hole prior to hole 14, to win the ace pot. Or so we thought, for a moment.
We step up to hole 14 blue, I have the box and proceed to park it after a great ace run.
Yaskis is up next and says he is going to take half of Heenans ace pot by making his next throw. Sure enough, he lays it out over the water and it hyzers into the basket for the ACE!!!
Heenan, next to throw, declares it was his ace pot to start with and claims he's going to pile one in on Joe's ace.
Soon as Heenan let it go, it was in, all the way. Two aces in one round.
With the last shot and three previous shots right at it, Nick Eco stepped up and threw a huge hyzer bomb out over the water, that I thought was in from the moment it left his hand.
The disc flies in, right at it and then SMASH, he nails a basket full of chains.
However it does not stay in.
Those four shots were great, but Heenan calling his second ace to win the Ace Pot was amazing.
Best I've ever seen.

Re: The Best I Have Ever Seen
MHO 2014
There is a massive gallery standing on the path to hole 10 from hole 9. Ricky has the lead and hits first available off the tee (it was probably 3rd available but whatever) and still has no look at the basket from his lie. His recovery shot has very little recovery involved and he is lying 2 next to the blue tee pad and proceeds to lean out and snap off one of the most buttery flick putts of all time. The second it left his handed it was in, it flipped up flat and coasted 200+ downhill until it caught the center chains.
It might not be a huge birdie or ace but it was such an amazing par save in the final round which kept him in it until he also contributed what might be the worst roll-away ever. The devastating upshot on 18 would have been moot had Ricky not saved that par on 9

If you saw video footage of the shot, you'd clearly see that I thought that was an amazing shot.
Ricky gave me the look of "this guy is more pumped than I am".
Funny part is, I was more pumped.
Good one there Jimmy.
