Trash talk...
Lets talk some trash...
What are some of the local clubs doing to curb the trash issues (assuming you have them) at courses?
The trash at Borderland has become a serious issue, and we are trying to come up with some logical ideas to deal with it. Barrels are not an option and will not be added to any part of the course other than where they are now. We have "carry in, carry out" signage, but it does not seem to be very effective.
Curious to hear some of the efforts on other courses in New England...

Re: Trash talk...
Offenders that are caught are usually verbally abused until they either learn or are asked to never return.
The more regulars that subscribe to this policy, the better.
Signs have minimal effect as some people need a face to face encounter to get things to sink in.
Sometimes you gotta be a @=====>
Unfortunately these days there are people that NEED it shoved in their face.

Re: Trash talk...
It will take a lot of time. First the course or part of the course has to be cleaned. Then a person, or a group, or a group of groups need to play. Find litter.
Have phones with good batteries and video cameras and film the people or groups who litter littering. Film the violation and the confrontation. Proceed with all necessary, legitimate, effective measures.
It doesn't seem like it will take long to find some of the people who keep doing this but time will have to be spent.
The problem is definitely not going away on its own.

Re: Trash talk...
If you see someone littering, call them out.
Be vigilant. Don't lay down. Make said offender understand by any means possible.
Being polite and courteous will almost always get you no where.
Don't try to understand them, rather try to make them understand you.

Re: Trash talk...
pretty much what Dave said, nice doesn't work against the mindset that feels it is ok to just throw crap around, KDGC picks up trash on our course and calls violators out on it, if we catch someone red handed and they are complete jerks, we may consider bringing it to the Army Core of Engineers and ask that they be banished from the park. It sure is frustrating though, I think there are a lot of factors but mostly it is a generational thing, I have never seen a disc gollfer past age 30 trash a place, actually the older the golfer the more they seem to "get it", this generation has a self centered "me first attitude" and sense of entitlement, I know this is a sweeping statement and would like to back that by saying I know a lot of 20 somethings in NEFA that are great people and are continuing this tradition of being a good steward, I'm talking about the dimwits who do not post on this board or belong to our organization.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

Re: Trash talk...
At our local course in Eugene,Oregon we saw a TON of traffic and thus a good amount of trash. We, the local players/Club, took it upon ourselves to not allow this so we all "adopted a hole". All 18 of us that adopted a hole played the course several days a week and it was our chore to make sure our hole was trash free. If someone that "adopted" a hole was out of town or was moving then they would reach out to someone else on the team to help them out. It worked out pretty darn well.

Re: Trash talk...
Thanks guys (mostly)
As a BDGC committee member, I have to tread lightly in terms of confrontation, but I ALWAYS remind people that the course/park is carry in/carry out, and will say something along the lines of "those aren't your bud light cans you're leaving all over the course, are they?" We (locals) do our best to spread knowledge.
It's not fair, IMO, to have someone "adopt" a hole and be responsible for picking up after these morons. We have league players occasionally pick up trash during leagues, and we do "trash rounds" every so often when we notice it's really getting bad out there.
I think when the weather gets nice again and the park gets really busy with the casuals, I'm going to spend a day out there just walking the course and having some conversations with the offenders.

Re: Trash talk...
Now that avid dgers are full time rangers at tullz they are not afraid to hand out citations
I just spoke with them both at last tc match and we may even do a sting
A few people get rangers busting out woods with fine pad the word spreads and maybe the crap slows a Lil
Franchi at Flatrock is not afraid to ban
RFG you might be shot straight up but in all reality gun mess litter is actually insane more then I ever imagined

I'm hoping that with the appointment of "Ranger Buck", and his affiliation with disc golf, that things might trend in the right direction soon.

Re: Trash talk...
Trash leagues are a short term fix only but do work. At league give every group a trash bag and then whoever collects the most crap off the course gets something. Details can be done however, but I had success for a while doing this at West Thompson.

I hear your frustration Eric, but no matter what protocols and/or actions are adopted to deal with this issue, there will always be an element of unfairness as the lion's share of the cleanup/monitoring effort will fall upon willing volunteer effort.
We've had an overall level of success in dealing with trash at Burgess in that we took a once un-managed situation and made it manageable, which is really the best one can hope for in the long run. Many of the Burgess league players and TC players have embraced the trash management approach and thus we have converted potential litterers into non-litterers and in some cases, willing volunteers. I believe that recruiting newbies into leagues and/or team challenges (aka, bring them into the local dg family fold) will, by process of elimination, reduce the number of potential litterers, while increasing your monitoring presence. No matter what, there will always be the d-bag factor that no amount of education, stern warnings or other forms of coaxing will ever make it go away...just goes with the territory of an ever increasing level of popularity. Just my .02
I'm glad to hear you're not putting additional barrels out there and sticking with carry in/carry out philosophy

Re: Trash talk...
On a side note, the salt bags I've been using on my driveway would be great for carting the glass soda bottles people leave strewn on their favorite courses. If everyone saves them for clean-up it is a recycling/free-material type of positive movement. It can be called Salt Bags for D-Bs. (Charcoal bags are ideal too)
