Slater Park Disc Golf Course
Hi All,
It's been a long time since I've posted, but I wanted to get the word out on this. This year, the city of Pawtucket is planning to install an 18 hole course at Slater Park. Fully funded through the Public Works Department, they are looking to have two baskets and two tees per hole, with the long course topping out at 11, 829 feet.
I went on partial walk-through with the Park Supervisor and the Landscape Architect who is designing the course. The location and the holes designs look good at first glance, the work will be in the details of each hole, and making the four layouts per hole work together like we did at Borderland.
What is nice is that the funding and permitting is all in hand or on schedule. Soon comes the detail work of basket type, tee construction options, fairway design tweaking, and all the things that end up taking most of the time, short of actual construction.
An advisory group of interested players/volunteers is probably the next step. Post here if you're interested.
Thanks,
Rich Gunther

Slater park is an excellent choice! I've brought my practice basket there a few times and made up holes, can't wait to see what the layout looks like. I live in Pawtucket currently and would be happy to help out with the course

The picture at the top of the article says it all. NIMBY, right?
In the comments, people seem mad about mostly political stuff, but they also feel that the park is being taken away from the public. I guess people don't realize that the public will be playing disc golf there. For disc golf being such a passive recreation, it sure does get the old folks rilled up!

Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

[This is an email that was forwarded to me, written by the Pawtucket Mayor's chief of staff]
Good morning,
My name is Dylan Zelazo. I am Mayor Grebien's Chief of Staff here in Pawtucket.

The committee scheduled the meeting at the request of an individual who is opposed to the course and will be in attendance to speak against the project. This meeting will be an opportunity for you to voice your support for this exciting project in person. If you are available, please join us at Pawtucket City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue, 3rd Floor Room 303. If you would like to speak on the matter, please arrive five to ten minutes early so you can sign up on the sheet on the wall outside of Room 303.

So the last I was told they are looking to open up Slater Park in spring, They had some vandalism happen and they did not want to put the baskets in the ground just to be destroyed. Hopefully we will have a beautiful 18 hole course in the spring!

Re: Slater Park Disc Golf Course
Update on Slater Park:
First off Thank You everyone who showed up tonight, It really means a lot to the recreations department to have our support.
From the look of things the city and neighbors are proposing to the mayor's office that the course be scaled back to a 9 hole course with 2 tee pads and i believe 2 pins i could be wrong on the pins but defiantly 2 tee pads. They want to run a trail period for 1 year before expanding to 18 holes. The mayor's office is committed to talking about it but they are standing strong for a full 18 course. On the bright side at least the neighbors have compromised to a 9 hole course with 2 pads. Hopefully they can resolve this by spring.
If i hear of anymore updates i will keep this feed in the loop.

Been a few months since I've heard anything on Slater Park. I'd love to stop there and throw nine just as soon as I can, it's kind of on my work route. Any news?

Grebien hopes to open disc golf course next month
By ETHAN SHOREY, Breeze Online News Editor
PAWTUCKET – A scaled-back version of a planned disc golf course at Slater Park will hopefully be open by the middle of June, said Mayor Donald Grebien this week.
Grebien said he’s been meeting with District 3 City Councilor Terry Mercer and engineers on changing the layout of the course based on neighborhood concerns. Officials will share information on the layout of the nine-hole course once the design is ready, he said.
Though the original plan for the disc golf course met requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Grebien said officials, “out of an abundance of caution” based on concerns raised by the council, worked with state officials to increase accessibility to the course and “further improve the experience.”
“The opening of the remaining nine holes will be contingent upon the improvements under the ADA being agreed to and implemented,” he said.
Grebien said officials are “excited about the opening of this recreational amenity.” He said once the final date for the ribbon-cutting is decided, he’ll be challenging City Council members to an inaugural disc golf tournament.
Disc golf involves players tossing discs toward a chained basket. Like with standard golf, the goal is to get the disc in the basket in the fewest number of shots possible. Also similar to regular golf, different discs are used depending on the distance from the hole.
The mayor has said that the first nine holes of the course will be located more toward the inside of Slater Park to have as little impact on neighbors as possible.
Neighbors have repeatedly expressed concerns about the development of a disc golf course in the city park, saying it will have a negative impact on their quality of life.
Christopher DeGrave, ADA coordinator for the state, told The Breeze last December he was surprised that officials didn’t contact his office prior to planning the disc golf course. He has been working with representatives from the city on changes to the course.

Checked it out, soo much potential here 2 baskets and 2 teepads per hole, 9 holes for now, some of the first few are amazing open holes, but the last few haven't really been cut thought woods yet. All the tees are pea gravel, I would assume they will pour concrete at some point.

Re: Slater Park Disc Golf Course
I just played today for the first time. Beautiful park, no doubt. Score card adds par wrong, says 36 is total par, but when you add it up it's 35 (for white, blue & gold). Otherwise the map and score cards are really nice, and were essential actually.
Ultimately I'm very happy about it. A couple of the holes are truly cruel (I decided to start w/golds and got my @ss kicked) ... nice orange mach 4 baskets. Warm sunny day and I didn't really have many park pedestrians in the way of the game at all, which bodes well IMO.
Great work ... I understand TM's involved?

So I guess TM wasn't involved in the design; don't know why I thought that. Whoever did design it though, I've played it a bunch, great work in my humble opinion.
Is there a mando coming anywhere? That teebox angle on hole 5, par 4, is confusing me a little.
Here's another picture of hole 1:

Re: Slater Park Disc Golf Course
The Course is open to play! When i get some spare time i will try to type up a good preview of the course. Right now there are 2 baskets and 2 teepads for all 9 holes. The longs are Long! I recommend starting with Shorts then move from there. You will want to get a lay of the land before taking on the longer holes. Also there are some holes with blind spots where park goers are walking. Please always look before you throw! A lot of people still don't know what the sport is and what we are doing so please help educate them in a positive manner. You will run into some people hanging out on fairways just politely ask them to watch out while you throw or wait until they are clear.
It is a fun challenging 9 hole even for just the shorts. The first 4 holes are beautiful mostly open shots with a few trees to contend with. then hole 5 is just ridiculous! as of right now there is no mando but i can see one coming into play here as the intention of the design was to go through the woods. But why would you throw a pray shot to get half way up the "Fairway" and have to shoot another pray shot. You can go out the left side which is very open with a righty side arm of lefty BH which gives you a good look for 2 and easy 3 almost every time. Hole 6 and 7 are just tight tunnel shots that finish right a bit. Hole 8 is a righty anhyzer back hand or low skipping flick its short but bends right quickly. I found a crazy hyzer lane that is very risk reward to the right! Hole 9 is a hard right to left with a tight lane. There are a few good holes that could be aced!
I hope to start a league there in the early spring but don't have all the details figured out right now. Keep an eye out for the facebook page for more updates! (not up yet but hopefully soon)
Mike any time you want to go, I live less than 15 minutes away just shoot me a message on FB.
