Smoking is....

Post by Dave Jackson »

.....effing gross and makes you look silly. Even makes disc golfer look less like athletes and more like people playing a game, not a sport.

This is coming from an ex-smoker.
Yes, butts are pretty darn good when ya need them, the thing is, you don't.
You don't need them and the people around you don't need to smell them.
Plus, they make you look like you don't know better than to not smoke them.
Try the prescription Chantix. Suffer through the side effects, don't be a wussy. You have the guts to fire up a butt around people who think it sucks, so have the guts to get through quitting.
Try a vaporizer, if you dare....
I'd eat coconut cat turds before I vaporized some mystery juice through a contraption that looks utterly ridiculous. Buuuut, if it gets you off butts, then vaporize away my friend.
I know, I know, what about doobage?
Hell, try quitting that too. You'd be surprised how you feel months later.

Ya see, the best thing about quitting is proving to yourself you can do it. You are in control. You can always go back to smoking. It will be there when your ready to start again, just be in control.
It's like taking the tee shot on hole one white at Maple Hill.
You've gotta commit to getting that disc over that pond, 340', into a headwind. So you focus, stay down on your throw and follow through down the line.
Poof, your across the pond and you know you can do it again and again.
Yes, you are in control.

Take control, do us all a big favor and quit butts. If not forever, just try to do it for a whole month, no cheating and tell me how you feel 30 days later.

I'll give you a very heartfelt high-five or a hug if you can do it. My guess is, others will too.

If butts take years off your life, that does not sit well with me as I can say I'd like you all to be around as long as possible and not go too soon because of a dumb cigarette.

Do it for yourself.
Do it for someone else.
Do it for me.
Just do it.

Good Call Dave I'll share this soapbox as I feel similar.
I was a pack and a half day smoker, marlboro reds. I was also a runner, go figure. I had my last butt December 31st 2013 and haven't looked back. I use the electronic vaporizers, I know where the e-juice is made and it has 3 ingredients unlike the 7000 chemicals butts do.The verdict is still out on long term health effects but I know it is far better than traditional cigarettes. The benefits from not smoking are huge. I no longer smell, have to leave the house and sneak around like some crack head trying to get a fix. I also feel alot better,my cardio and vo2 max has gone up significantly. I completed my 1st marathon last may and spend about 45$ a month instead of 250$, no more butts in pockets, in the laundry, no more being pissed off at that one guy who is always bumming smokes, my mom is happy. Quitting is tough, but it is absolutely doable, I also agree, coverage of disc golf tournaments with pros cranking butts does not improve our image. All that being said, I recognize individual liberties, if someone chooses to smoke, so be it, my point is there are healthier cheaper alternatives to consider. I hope to be off e-cigs by the end of the year. One last thought, If people are going to smoke, be very mindful on the courses, high fire alerts around New England, doesn't take much to get a blaze going.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

There was a small fire at Dan Doyle's course in Warwick last weekend. It was started by a disc golfer's cigarette. Thankfully, Dan was home to put out the fire. It could have been a disaster.

Smoking is way less annoying to me than drinking. Idiots who think they're so funny spouting B.S. Or sloppy drunk guys who smell like Titans uncle giving me hugs. I say ban it all, or try remembering that this is america and people should be able to deal with annoying stuff every once in a while. I hate Taylor Swift...

I'm just over 7 months no butts and have never felt as good as I do now. 2 round tournaments are so much easier then they used to be along with conquering the hills everywhere that we deal with. Chantix was what I used and I strongly recommend it. The side effects are only there if you allow them to be, Your mind is a very powerful thing ! Also for me disc golf was one of the hardest parts about quitting until I found lifesavers, gum or sunflower seeds. DO IT FOR YOURSELF !!! Know that there are ZERO good things about smoking.......ZERO

gratz on 7 months. I quit when i was 28 and it was very difficult. Took me about a year of trying to quit, failing, trying again ect. The smell was what got me. I just couldnt be around anyone that smoked or id end up smoking everytime. Its funny, now they smell so terrible to me but at the time thats what made it so crazy difficult to quit. To me, if you care about anyone other than yourself, then you quit. That simple.

It's not Camel Joe's fault. LoL.

There is no fault.

Some of the reasons/motives people have quit mentioned in this thread are very interesting.

Yes this is America and smoke em' if ya got em', but the numbers of folks who wish you didn't is growing every day.

The post Craig made about the fire was a part of smoking I'm sure lots of people have overlooked. Yes, butts start fires, or as some would state it, people start fires.

No matter how you slice it, smoking is no where near good in any way, shape or form.

Why people start smoking has always baffled me............. I tried it as a teenager and got sick twice. The reply to that, that I got from smokers, was "you'll get used to it after a while and not get sick".

WTF ??!!! What possesses someone to KEEP DOING something that makes you throw up ??? It's not like the nicotine hooks you after the first cigarette.

Cigarettes are stealth bombs that steal you away, one puff at a time. There are too many in their prime living the disc golf dream, but sucking down the the smoky blue stream.

Somewhere ahead in the haze there's a bean counter putting pencil slashes through rounds that could have been.

My two brothers moved to Florida around 1990 to help my father run a Checkers Pizza; they were in their 30s and both jocks, could beat me at everything (which wasn't too much of an accomplishment, I'm sure....). They had never smoked until they moved there; every one in the pizza joint smoked butts and I guess it's how they got started. I still don't get it. Peep pressure I guess.

Ok, so we know smoking sucks.
It's bad for you, blah, blah, blah.

Do people realize how offensive it can be to others? Especially during tournament play?

I have a member at Maple Hill who recently played a PDGA event in MA and was appalled at how often the players in his group were smoking and burning.
It was on a tight wooded course. I'm sure there was little breeze so the smoke somewhat lingered for him to deal with.
He just couldn't believe how players were constantly cranking butts, crushing vaporizers and burning bowls all throughout the rounds. He assumed players would consider his desire not to smoke, vape or burn and be more discreet down wind with said habits.
They just didn't consider his smoke free position and in turn had the guy breathing second hand smoke while competing in a PDGA event.

That just plain sucks and so do the players who were puffing whatever it was they were while playing with him.
I'm glad I wasn't in the group playing that day.

Smoking sucks and some people don't want to smell it.
Not your butts.
Not your vaporizers.
Not your OG Kush.

You know I like all of you, smokers and non smokers, I'm just speaking out for this one guy who wouldn't say anything because he didn't want to be "that guy".

Lets fix things so this thread does not apply anymore.

Nope.
Lol.
Stew is incredible and butts can lick my plantars wart.

Ciggs make our players look like clowns and vaping is hardly better. Though, it is better.

Prohibit smoking on your property.

Athletes smoking looks odd.

with all the dry-windy weather this month, having people that look odd on my property (especially one that makes money of its trees) would be the least of my concerns. been reading about tons of brush fires the past few weeks.

It took me well over a minute or two to extinguish smoldering embers in the ground on 6 yesterday before the tournament, aside from the fact it is absolutely disgusting it also now has the potential to burn down and ruin a disc golf course

Totally agree. The fire danger is heightened right now. Glad there wasn't a larger issue to deal with pre-tournament yesterday. But let's not go cuckoo here, that's an opinion. It's a commonly shared opinion and easy to agree with, but if we call it a fact, then what next? I agree with the person who said to prohibit smoking from your property. It starts fires (fact) and other people don't like it (fact). I don't allow smoking on my property.

BIG THANKS to Jimmy for stomping out the beginnings of a fire yesterday!
The weather is supposed to be above average in temperatures and below average in rainfall, so everyone keep your eyes open for signs of a smoldering ember or butt in the woods while disc golfing. You can usually smell the smoke as well if there is no wind or it is blowing in the right direction.

It's nice to see all the input on this thread. Hopefully this thread will raise some awareness.
