Had an 'AHA' moment playing at Tully the other day...my first time out in 3 years, with a friend playing for the first time. It quickly became obvious that DG is a sport you can play and have a lot of fun with..while at the very same time sukking at it (relative to serious DGers). What an oddity...because at other sports that I'm familiar with, sukking absolutely kills the interest in trying to improve, and good lord, no way any fun.
After helping build Ross's Run at PCC a few years back, I became quite interested in what DG was all about and how it could be a success at a BG course. We never got to see that play out unfortunately, and due to shoulder issues I couldn't play the last little bit. But I was intrigued by the sport and the unique things DG has going for it. Cheap, reasonably quick to play, easy to pick up to get to the sukk level and fairly easy to get to the rec level. If truly interested, I could see a fairly fast path to getting better and aspiring to high levels. But the key point was my AHA moment...sukking still can be a lot of fun and sustain interest in staying with it. Untrue in BG, where sukking is painful, ego deflating and expensive. No fun, unless your good at it. Bad formula. Tennis? Good exercise, good scenery if playing with a cute gal, but ultimately quite boring and repetitive. Bad formula and also not much fun. Fishing? Badmitten? Bocce? Curling? hmmm
So my thought was ...DG, where sukking is fun. I can see it on billboards now.

Titan...The plan this summer is to hit Tully hopefully once a week, either Wed or Thurs PM around 1:15. Would be fun to connect with you if time allows , by yourself or bring your child, if you don't mind getting slowed down by a couple of noodle arms. Fond memories for me of working with you at the Ross's Run birth..good times. The DG experiment at PCC didn't get to have much of a life, but it gave me the chance to meet a bunch of great local DG folk and that certainly made it worthwhile. Keep in touch.

Re: DG growth and marketing formula
Just saw this thread. Hey Glenn! Hope all's well.
I agree with all you've said. It IS a sport / activity which you can be "less than really good at" and still enjoy. Interesting thing is that people of "equal abilities" seem to enjoy playing together...whatever that ability is. I personally don't mind playing with the McBeth's of the world AND the McDuff'ers of the world equally...and can accept MY abilities (being either worse or better, respectively) along side theirs and NOT worry about theirs. But people probably get somewhat intimidated, etc. (they shouldn't, but I guess you can't beat human nature) playing with people a bit better than they.
As for the "marketing" aspect of it, word of mouth seems to be working pretty darn well. The sport is growing like the weeds we try to keep in check! Make a course that's convenient to get to, is enjoyable to play, and they'll come.
Karl
Ps: Hope to catch you around this summer
