Goals...

Post by Karl Molitoris »

In all my business and 'sports' experience, one of the major flaws I see in people is there unwillingness / inability to "set goals". What happens is that you go through life/sports/etc. somewhat 'haphazardly' and wonder why you haven't progressed or obtained what you're after. It may be FUN doing it that way but Rome wasn't built in a day and it certainly wasn't built without planning and hard, focused work.

"Goal", like "plan" is NOT a 4-letter word! We should embrace them, work at them with effort, and if you don't 'cheat yourself' (doing them with half a heart) more 'success' - however you define such - will come your way. Been there, done that. Take my word at it...as I'm probably older and more experienced than you. If you doubt it, I propose the following example.

Late in 2014, I realized that I was going into a new disc golf age-division and thus would be qualified to play in 8 different divisions (MPO, MPM, MPG, MPS, MA1, MM1, MG1, and MS1). I thought it would be cool to have as a 2015 goal of mine for me to play in all 8 divisions! The year starts and after some moderate early success, I thought maybe this goal 'needs to be revised' (revising goals IS allowed  ) and thus would try to win (at least once) in all 8 divisions. Turns out (per the PDGA HQ) that this had never been done before...a person winning at least once in the same calendar year in 100% of the divisions they were qualified for and that division number being as high as 8.

If I didn't set initial goals (that may be hard but attainable), make a plan, work towards attaining them, and revisit these goals (to alter if warranted) I'm sure I never would have accomplished this small but kind-of-cool feat.

So what are YOUR goals (dg or otherwise) for this year?
