Eagle Scout Project-North Smithfield Disc Golf Course
Posted: Wed Apr 20, 2005 4:16 pm
Hi again! this is Billy Hargreaves again. I want to provide my first update on my eagle project, the disc golf course to be installed at the North Smithfield High school. Many of you may have seen the article that was written about my project in the March 24th issue of the Valley Breeze. Many thanks to Mr. Paul Dubois for taking the time to speak with me regarding my project and authoring the article. During this past month I had the opportunity to discuss my project and the details of the sport of disc golf with Mr. Mike Dussault, a professional disc golf player. Mr. Dussault provided us with information on what the best ways of designing the course would be. He gave us a magazine on courses in the U.S, design information, and products. He also gave me a putter disc, which is smaller than a regular Frisbee but weighs 170 grams. I went to Ninigret Park in Charleston, RI, to observe the baskets and placement and signs used on that course, the only course in RI. During my visit I interviewed two groups of players using the course despite the eight to ten inches of snow that was on the ground. Mr. Silva, the principal of my school wrote a letter of recommendation in which he approved and supported the concept of my project. My fundraising efforts are progressing as I had originally planned as many of our local businesses have supported my project. I have set up an account at Citizens Bank and have made my first deposit for the checks I have received up to this point. Currently I am looking for sign providers as I plan on using the signs to be placed at the start of every hole. These signs will contain the hole number, par, distance from the tee to the basket, and the hole sponsor. If any of you have a suggestion for a sign provider please contact me at 762-0903.
Next Steps:
In early to mid April I plan on going in front of town council to see if the town would like to donate some money towards the project. I will design the course applying to the standards of Frisbee golf course designs from across the country. I will bring the gym staff and Mr. Dussault together to go over the course plans and have them review my plans by actually walking the course and observing my basket placement plans.
I will also be ordering the nine baskets as well as the disc golf rules sign from Inova, a leader in the industry known for their high quality baskets. The baskets are to be delivered in mid to late April, possibly early May due to the three to four week lead time and the four to five day transportation time. Inova is located in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
