Tully Lake/Dam course

Post by Dave Jackson »

Go play Tully. They cut tons of trees and made several holes much easier to make a 3. It has natural tee's, an awesome layout and hardly ever gets played. Who ever is responsible for the layout and course maintenence is doing a fantastic job. Hole's 1,9,10 & 18 are great. They start and finish each nine hole side so well. There is nothing like bombing a roc up the left side of the tree on hole #1, and parking it. For me, courses that have a good starting hole and a good finishing hole are great. I guess that would make Tully Lake, um, Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tully Lake is awesome! It is worth the drive to the middle of nowhere to play. I think the hardest hole is #10. That hole is a dogleg left bridle path with sloping trees on either side. If you get stuck in the trees, forget about it! It could take you three throws to get back onto the path.

I love Tully, My Aunt and Uncle live in New Salem five minutes away. I always hated staying at their house because it's in the middle of nowhere. But since I discovered Tully, I don't mind at all. Haven't been there since it was only 9 holes, I can't wait to get back.

Strange how "improving habitat" looks like wholesale clear-cutting. And the piles of bark mulch are also a nice touch. NOT.
God help you if you lose a disc in all that slash they left lying on the ground. Some of that stuff would stop a tank.
The birds and bees and such may like the changes but I don't. There's no shade on 6, 7, and 8 and all that slash is UGLY. It'll take a good ten years or so for it all to grow in and look natural again.
And a personal beef: As a lefty, 9 is a nightmare. I find it almost impossible to stay out of the spillway. 10 is worse because the embankments on the sides of the ramp are, in my opinion, dangerous if your throw lands anywhere to the side of the ramp. Last time I played that hole I nearly sprained an ankle getting my disc back. Twice. Throw straight, you say? OK, but I'm still fairly new and God knows I want to throw straight but it doesn't always happen. A bad throw should cost you points- but not blood.
1,2,3,4, and 5 are all right, and 6 was more interesting when the woods were still there.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see a course there than not- but the recent changes- which I acknowledge weren't made by the people who put the course there- don't exactly make me want to go back.

Rick, I don't know what is in your arsenal, but for a lefty I'd stick to a beat Stingray to make it over the fence on 9, then it's straight out from there. As far as the tree removal, yeah, it's kinda much, but it does open up a couple of ace runs, and baskets or tees CAN be moved easier than trees growing back. At least the back nine is much shadier than the front, so a little give and take isn't too bad. Remember when Barre was more tree-happy? We've adjusted to it now, so keep the chin up.

I did have a Stingray for a while, but I lost it. Maybe I'll pick one up again and try it. That solves my problem with 9 anyway. I'm still not a big fan of 10 even though the ramp is the "logical" place to put a fairway....there's a lot of loose rock and such that makes for treacherous footing if your throw goes off to the side.
You're right about Barre, the woods on 13 and 14 look much better now. If you like tight woods and a lot of elevation changes, give Devens a try. I'm told there'll be a set of steps on 16 some day.
Maybe I'm just grumpy because I've had such awful rounds there the last couple of times out. I know a lot of effort goes into making a course and I don't want to seem ungrateful. Maybe it's the blasted deer flies buzzing in my hair when I'm trying to concentrate on a long putt. But I do wish they'd left a few more trees standing near the fairways.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm on hiatus from work which gives me plenty of time to practice.

Throw a putter, not very far on your tee shot on # 10. It has the best chance to put you in the middle. Maybe another two putters and a 20 foot putt for a four. Four on # 10 is a good score. I throw a wizzard off the tee, then a beat roc and hopefully make the putt. I actually liked the course more with all the tree's intact, now there are more ace runs and the course is easier for most players. Tee-Bird,Leopard, Roc, Stingray are all great choices for this type course. Stick with it, when you can play a course like Tully well, other courses will seem less demanding.
Have players been giong to the left of the tree on hole #1 and parking it right next to the basket. Try it.

Last time on 10 I put my Roc about 1/3 of the way down the fairway, then approached to end with a 20 foot putt. Next time might not be so easy. 17 is a great hole for a thumber, up and over. Next time I might try the left side approach on 1, but it's gotta be a perfect shot to not fade back into the drink. All this talk about playing makes me not want to sit here typing.

Being left handed means I can throw to the left of the big tree on 1 and I can make it past the log boom at least. Not too hard for me to get a three on that hole. 2 is pretty straightforward as log as I can avoid the trees, and a reasonably well-thrown anhyzer with my Leopard gets me a deuce on 3. 4 isn't a difficult par, and 5 definitely looks aceable. 6 is where I totally lost my driver on the left, luckily another group passing through found it, nowhere near where I thought it was. Made par on 7, and played it smart for a four on 8 avoiding going over the edge of the road on the right. Then the spillway rocks took a chunk out of my driver on 9, and my second throw landed on the rocks again. Finally cleared the fence on my third try, then proceeded to flail through the woods on the other side of the fairway, finally getting it in the basket after 8 throws with a missed putt. Seeing as how I'd already thrown a round at Devens earlier that day, I decided I'd had quite enough disc golf for one day and not play the back nine, but I did throw 18 just for grins because it was on the way back. Got a four.
Jim, my schedule is wide open, let me know what's good for you. I'm thinking of playing Barre today if the rain isn't too bad. ("I don't think the heavy stuff is going to come down for a while"....)
Having this time off means I can check out new places to play. I did a couple of quick rounds on the "easy nine" at Buff yesterday, which is a bit more user-friendly. I must be getting better because I didn't get as many pars there the previous times.
Once again, thanks for the advice, and I'll try Tully again someday.

I can be at Barre a little after 3, if that's not too late for you. Since you're not working, let me know when you'll be there, so I can fit it in. thanks, jimbob

Sure, I can be there. I drive a green Explorer with Thule racks on top. I'm going to head out for lunch and I'll make my way to the dam for three. Hope to see you. Rick

I met a dude who was out here staying near Keene, NH. He went and played Tully and said he thought it was an awesome course. He liked hole #1 and #9 and even #10. He made note of a few other holes and had nothing but good things to say about all the holes, except one. #11. I asked if he anhyzered a beat roc through the 3 foot gap and he said he tried several routes with very little luck. I told him to hit that 3 foot gap and a duece is easy. The guy has played all over the country and he said Tully was a good course. Just spreading the love people have for that fantastic course. Oh, and the guy was a good disc golfer carding a three on both #9 & #10 and said he shot 61 on Maple Hill Airplanes (the long course). Don't be afraid, PLAY TULLY !!!!

Crazy timing, I was just reading about the talks of hosting a tourney at Tully from back in Nov 2007. I was about to repost the subject but didn't and the next thing I see is a post about Nefa tourney at Tully....Sweet!

Id be cautious of Tully because of the flooding that has gone on at the other ACOE courses lately. Not sure if that place is playable right now, would love to know im wrong though because Tully is a great course that IMO doesnt get nearly enough play/love

I was thinking of playing Tully as well, until like Andy pointed, I realized the flooding potential. And I dont feel like a 45 min. drive to not be able to play.

I was there last Sunday--

Hole 1 - Water/ice 1/2 way up basket. We used hole 2 tee sign as a target.
Hole 2 - Playable across water/ice
Hole 3 - Unplayable. Basket nearly under water/ice. Dangerous ice.
Hole 4 - Tee under water/ice. Pick your own shorter tee

All other holes playable. Snow covered tees.

In the crusty snow, the course offered a real workout. With today's snow it should be even more so.

We played Tully for our first time on Sunday. It was like turning the clock back about a month or so. The conditions were about the same as the Buff ice bowl. All of the holes are playable (once you find them) but some tee boxes are still ice and snow and some baskets are in glaciers.
We still had a ball, the course was a lot of fun. Some of the distances seem a little off from what is posted on the tee signs though.
Oh, ya I won (59), Paul (63), Gil (72), Kev (73) and Brain (75).
Several of our Tee shots were not in the right direction making for some 250-300 foot upshots from distant fairways.
This course is a couple of "next tee" signs and a few weeks of 60+ degree days from being great.
