Pinnacle = Good times

Post by andrew »

I live in Jaffrey and Made the trip up to Newport New Hampshire (no offense but I am sick of driving south to Mass) to play at pellham. A beautiful drive up some beautiful country roads and played 2 rounds with some of the locals.

The course is long and completely in the woods but with nice very defined fairways and a nice mix of righty and lefty holes. A three is possible on every hole (but I didn't get a whole lot of them) and there are four or five wholes that you could argue are the course's signature hole. Although it is woodsy it isn't too dense and there wasn't a lot of time spent searching for lost discs. I got there at noon and met up with some locals. Mr B is a teacher at the school and is the course pro along with Gary who is also very involved in the development of the course. I ran in to them on hole three and ended playing there until 5:00p.m.. They were a little too generous with the calley's but I graciously accepted. A great course and hopefully we can get some more people out for some more 12:00 noon doubles on sundays. It is kind of in the middle of nowhere but worth the trip

That's Pinnacle not Pelham

Post by Gary Stansfield »

Hey all...Just to clear the confusion...Andy is talking about Pinnacle DGC in Newport, NH. 50 minutes north of Keene on Route 10. (Or take Route 89 and head to Newport).

Andy, it was good to meet you and show you around the course on Sunday. Hope you'll be back on a regular basis. (It would be cool if you could edit the title of this thread to correct the name error.)

To all other NEFA-ites: Come on up and check out this course. Either James B. or I are happy to give guided tours. We are trying to get a regular noon Sunday doubles group going.

This past Sunday was our first gathering and the player pool was small(5) we sort of did a random draw, but if you bring a partner that would be fine as well.
Hopefully we will see more people in the coming weeks. I think this is a great doubles course.

Andrew, sorry you couldn't make it. There was a good turnout, locals coming out of the woodwork, or lumber yard to play. There were 4 new players from the surrounding area that came out. I hope this Sunday brings more!

Course work

Post by Gary Stansfield »

Lots of work has been accomplished at Pinnacle lately. We took advantage of the rain, and burned 5 large brush piles today. James and his crew of teen-zombie slaves have been busy pruning overhanging branches, thinning fairway edges, and generally improving lines. The course is playing better than ever.

NEFA-ites: If your summer travels take you anywhere near the Lake Sunapee/Dartmouth area of NH you need to play this course. The 1st Fall Foliage Flipfest, a NEFA points event, will be taking place in early October.

A GEM!

Post by Phil Kennedy »

Fate can play cruel tricks. For the past 40 years, we've been visiting my wife's parents in the Sunapee area several times a year and I've been frustrated because the few DG courses in NH were at least an hour away. So, of course, now that Pat's folks relocated to MI due to health problems, a little gem of a course sprouts up only 8 miles away in Newport!

I went to play it about a week ago while helping to clear out the house to put it on the market. It was a sweltering day made pleasant by the cooling forest this course threads through. It's tight but offers rewards to those who can combine accuracy and distance. There's good use of the elevation changes behind this over-grown, defunct ski area and an even blend of direction changes.

Tees and signage were nice with the exception that, for the life of me and five minutes of searching, I couldn't locate holes 2 & 3. The arrow on top of hole 1 pointed me directly to hole 4, so I'm left wondering what I missed?

The ferns were in full splendor...which means that you should use a spotter on many holes or expect to do a bit of searching if you play alone and stray even a few feet off the center fairways.

A couple of holes were absolute thrills. I stepped up to the tee of one near the end (15 or 16?), saw on the sign it was a blind "S" a little over 500 feet, with ferns and scrub galore and debated aloud with myself whether to risk losing my cherished 150G Sidewinder. I gave in to the seduction and was rewarded with a 3! Made my day!

A round at Pinnacle will make your day, too! :thumleft: :thumleft:

I've spent a few weeks working with my "teen-zombie slaves". We've been building tee boxes with pressure treated 6 x 6's and filling in with blue stone( thanks NEFA for the grant last year). We have extended some of the smaller boxes and leveled them out, improved the sinage, including re-posting the arrow from one to two, and we've installed some benches. The course is a little overgrown with ferns ect... but I will be clearing that once the boxes are completed. The course is improving everyday and will be in prime shape for the tournament in October.

Gary and I have spent some time cutting down ferns and brushy material on the course. We moved one of the tee boxes and pruned some of the trees. Three weeks until tourney and there is still lots that can be done to improve the course, I guess that will always be the case though.

I was there couple weeks ago which was my 2nd time there. I love the course but one needs to be fixed.

17th hole tee has a tree right front left side of the tee needs to be removed. Right after the threw then my hand hit the tree pretty hard. I was appeared to be alright. I have such a long arm so it was less roomy for me to do it. It's pretty bad place to be at for us to throw off the tee.

I wanted to let you know about it for future consider.

Sorry Travis, I hope you didn't hurt your hand too bad. I do agree that there is a problem with that tee box and I do have plans to fix it. We are going to move the box ahead about 15 feet to eliminate the tree problem and align the box with the fairway.
Thanks for your constructive coments. Hope you liked the course.

Hey Travis,

As a new player you may not realize the rules that apply to the tee area...

It annoys me to no end when players complain about an obstacle near the tee line...ie sign, bush or tree...as being a safety hazard..

The teeing area is the only place on the course where you have a choice of from where to throw...the rest of the course you have to place your front support foot at release where the disc came to rest...

At the tee you can be Three full meters behind the tee line at release...

This is perpendicular back from the edges of the tee line...

The drive does not even have to cross the front tee line...

So you have a choices as to how far back from the tee line and where right or left in the teeing area works best for you...

I find it hard to believe that players set them selves up on the teeing area so that there follow through is impeded...and that it is a safety hazard because they hit there hand after release on the drive...

If that tree near the tee is a hazard then what do you do on the approach when your lie is hard up next to the big fat oak trunk???

I hope that y'all at Pinnacle are moving the tee for a better reason than to alleviate a non-issue...

Thanks,

actually we are moving the tee for reasons other than the tree. I'm not really sure which tree is the problem since there are trees on both sides of the tee box. I'm a lefty, and have never even come close to hitting a tree and no cheater righties have complained about the tree on the right side. The box needs to be moved because it is too short and not really aligned along the fairway. I originally liked that it was raised however the back of the box drops off about 2 feet and the box is maybe 8 feet long. So I'm going to move it forward, build it up with timbers, and align it with the fairway.

TM,

Are you serious?

Your philosophy of tee design is appalling. The teebox should be the one area of the hole that is fair and safe for all players. A tree or signpost on the front corner of the box is an obvious advantage to the thrower of the opposite hand, not to mention the folly of allowing a condition to exist where injury can occur. Anywhere else on the fairway, the player must deal with what is there. But we all start from the teebox.... it has to be fair and safe for all.

Also note that the 3 meter allowance is only a factor if there is no teepad supplied. If a teepad is there, it must be used regardless of size.

Hey,

After reading the current rule I have to agree with the part about just the "pad" is good.... so depending upon how big or small the pad is is the area available from within which to throw...but no "pad" and 3meters behind the line...

The point was that you have a lot of choice as to where to throw and release in the teeing area..

Where does the challeng of the course start...3ft from the tee or 10 ft???

I understand the idea of making it safe in the litigiousness of society where we need to protect you from yourself...

The tee area regardless of which corner has the offending obstacle presents the same challenge to all players...different players will deal with it in there own way...some by throwing with a different hand...

I have set tees up with a pair of large trees as the tee posts...even in this set up you are not forced to throw close to or even between the two trees...but quite the mental challenge on the player teeing off of this tee...

I think that if you back off of the tee line and consider throwing across an edge as opposed to the front line...

I like and want a nice flat non slip level teeing surface with room for a few large strides before and after the teeing area...for some runup and follow through after release...the ideal size of the teeing area would be a minimum of four feet wide and a minimum 3 meters long...

I feel that as long as the area of the tee is big enough... then anything encroaching on the edges of this area are part of the challenge...

I Played at a tourney where the tee of the hole was set up at the edge of a field full of active bee hives...flower gardens and green houses...along the edges of the "fairway"....the pin was at the other end of a gauntlet of hives lining the first third of the fairway...glass green houses and flower gardens were OB the length of the fairway on both sides.

There were so many bees in the air that your hand would stike more than one in flight as you drove the disc off of the tee...

Not the safest tee but memorable...

not sure what this has to do with your point of my appalling tee design..

Thanks,
T.M.DYER

Bill,
As you know I've never denied my lefty prowess, and as you know, I'm now developing my right hand throw. I'm up to 320 feet.
Hope you come up for the tournament
