Roger Williams Park D.G.C.

Post by Norm Fitzgerald »

Here is the skinny, the place is definately epic(no not the disc!)I got permission to run an event somewhere around late November with portables ,it is going to be a fund raiser event for the club/course and will be run by the newly formed R.I.D.G.C. There will be fourthcoming details on said club as soon as a few more details are ironed out. Also there will be some fund raiser discs coming along in the near future ,one to help Ninigret become complete and another to benefit the club,I was thinking Rocs(of course)Buzzz's and Wizards with a speacial R.I. stamp.Stay tuned because this is the biggest week in R.I. Disc Golf history!!!!
I heard a young lad at the park the other day tellling his mom he knew how to play this game ,
all you have to do is aim at that basket over there and throw .......... Mindblowing!!!!!!!

My brother went to school at Roger Williams in the mid 80's. There used to be an object Frisbee golf course there. His friends etc played the course all the time. I played a few of the holes, when I would visit. One hole was called "Reefer Ridge". Great place for a course. I might have to make this event.

This is Roger Williams Park in Providence, not Roger Williams University in Bristol.

EEEKK!!!

Post by Norm Fitzgerald »

There are some hole names poppin' up already one is called roller derby, the roller lands in the open at the edge of a grove and either gets through or slams the base of a tree .Another is called the rat and the penguin because wed. morning while driving in I saw a bird that resembled a penguin, just figured the little guy had escaped the zoo,I started to pick up some trash and get a closer look and the bird flew away, turned out to be a gull or tern of somesort but definately had a tuxedo though.Greg later that day on his way out saw a rat that was sportin' some major lb's on that same hole!!!

who is planning to be there? What time? I might be able to check it out, but would need a timeframe. I love that area, when I worked I have always seen the potential of that particular area of the park for disc golf.

The course has been drawn onto the map ,I will be dropping it off tommorow to the city in hopes of a walk throuh/demo to soon follow,if they approve the course for immediate play we are prepared to mark off the layout and make maps available to any one with interest in playing at RWP.Their time line for spending is most likely next june but we are hoping to get permission to start some of the minor clearing to get the course ready for the baskets when they arrive.I will also be trying to have a couple of events with portables in the meantime,-Norm

All good!!

Post by Norm Fitzgerald »

Well there were some bumps in the road but things are looking good,we only had to re-locate from a stellar course to a really good one somewhere in the neighborhood of 4500 ft.to 5000 ft, we will be setting up a meeting with the park again tomorrow to find out what the next step will be, hopefully some good news soon!!!

I was throwin some disc a month ago at Buffumville a fellow player that offered to show us the course since I hadn't played it in a year and a half told me that someone was trying to put together a course at roger williams. I live in Prov and am and have been aggravated that RI has no courses. Ive lived in several condensed areas throughout the country and they have found ways to create several courses. So I guess Im saying make it happen. If you need additional help I have no problem offering my time.

I am sad to report that without a course in the ground, the club is not going to be able to pull off Ice Bowl '09. We are definately going to do WBDGW(worlds biggest disc golf weekend)in may at RWP and encourage everyone to come down for the 19th(?) Frostbite at Ninigret Feb. 14th,nine Mach baskets just showed up so the course should be looking as good as ever!!

Things are quiet on the Providence front, while Norm the Snowbird is out of town. We are gearing up to make a formal proposal to Roger Williams Park and, towards that end, we are now seeking letters of support.

Please include in your letter, among other things, how often you play disc golf in general, how often you would play roger williams (they seem to have some concern over whether there would be sufficient participation to justify the expense of installation), whether you would be willing to make a capital contribution to building the course, and whether you would be available to help out with teaching clinics (they want us to run periodic clinics especially with lower-income kids that live around the area).

We are also looking to bolster our #s in Rhode Island Disc Golf Club. For $25 Norm will send you a cool RIDGC tag and the right to buy discounted discs from the Club. We also have a link with Prime Discs to support RIDGC, please use it.

Please send letters of support and/or your Club dues to me, matthew brier, 2 dexter street, pawtucket, ri 02860.

Please help us get a course in 1 of the most beautiful parks in new england, 30 seconds off route 95 in providence.....

Doot collected money from a bunch of discgolfers and then disappeared.

I am sure Norm will come back, he always disappears this time of year. Or do we call it a migration?
