The low down on Dye
Well for all of you that are scratching your heads trying to figure out how to lay down the super sweet dyes on your favorite discs...some dudes from Oregon laid down a nice video showing a step-by-step guide.
This cat ChuCK is nasty at dying. Take a look at his gallery for some amazing disc art.

Now that the weather is getting colder I think that I'm ready to start laying down some new dyes. The only problem with a tight dye job is you are almost ensuring that if you lose your disc...you will never get it back!
Sorry J-bird

Yeah but it's real easy to spot someone throwing your plastic. I've been dying discs for a little over a year and use a method similar to that tutorial. There are also some great how to threads on dgr. That guy chuck is amazing. Incredible detail on some of his stuff. I will be bringing one of my dye jobs to the nefa auction.

I haven't bought anything from this place yet, but it seems to have the good vinyl for a great price. Cheaper than anything I've found here in Maine. the Oracle 631 is good stuff and for less than $15 you can make 30 dyes... so around $0.50 a dye is pretty dope.
My suggestion is to go with the opaque white...it is the cheapest and a little easier to see/work with than the clear.

Happy dying!

No way, man. Dyes don't alter the disc whatsoever, unless you mistakenly boil the dye while a disc is in it.
Thanks for the compliments, guys. Have you ever considered setting up a dye-only thread here on NEFA? Winter time is the best time for disc dyeing...

The other thing that "might" alter the disc are those that insist on cutting the vinyl while it is on the disc. Not that anyone would ever call you on this but I've seen dyes with tiny x-acto cuts on them which is questionable. There is really no need for this...just get yourself some transfer tape.
I think I'm going to get my operation going again and will post a few pics when they are finished.
Happy dying for you dmchale! If you are going to go...you might as well be happy.
To everyone else happy dyeing.

Not a bad idea...
I haven't dyed a disc for awhile.
Don't know if any of you have tried drawing a design in with crayon, but it makes for some pretty cool designs. The wax in the crayon keeps the dye off of the disc and will allow for more drawing. It appears more like a woodcut stamp.
I drew a skull on a red QMS and that dye is infamous in Colorado. So much so that I "lost" that particulare disc 5 or 6 times and it was returned to me every time. I decided to retire it, but still have it around.
If I find a picture of it I'll post it up here.

I'd say to put the transfer tape on regardless, because once you pull the backing off the contact paper or vinyl, the cut portions might not stay in place. Once the paper or vinyl is on the disc, pull the tape off as necessary. Just be carefull to not pull up the parts of the paper or vinyl you want to remain on the disc.

Hey everyone! Have not looked at this thread in a while and I like to see all the imagination at work. After seeing the video that started this all off I have been inspired and through experimentation and a few beers that sign vinyl it the way to go. I bought a yard of 3.2 mil.to start with from Dick Blick.com for around $6. That is enough for 13 full blanks with plenty to piece together a few more. Rit dye amazingly is the dye to use. The more pricey batik dyes do not seem to hold. Heating the dye slightly makes for more saturated colors but heating too much loosens the glue and leaves it on the disc which it is a real pain in the keester to get off. Acetone does not work but hot water and thumb rubbing seem to clean it off, it just takes a while. I also found an inexpensive light table from Blick that makes transfers of the original much easier. Finally a hot knife like used in woodburning works great, just work fast and don't cut ontop of you table. Keep on Keeping on!
If we're fools in life, a happy fool I would rather be.

Get the adhesive residue off with goo gone. It doesn't fade the color.
