I wouldn't have believed it, but Pye is actually looking great. The North Shore didn't get that much snow and Pye was very windblown, actually clearing many of the exposed slopes to the grass. I went up there with the dogs and a shovel this morning and managed to clear all the tees in about 1.5 hours -- some didn't even need any work -- the wind had already taken care of them. The snow drifts that are there were generally packed by the wind and would seem to hold up a disc pretty well or at least leave a good cut mark to find them. It was sunny and clear -- very nice.
Pulpit is in great shape as well. The tees were all cleared on Thursday.
A few of the locals are playing rounds today at Pye (10:30?), then Pulpit in the afternoon. Feel free to join us. Cheers. /JD
Pulpit Rock is a private course in Rowley, MA -- named after the nearby historic site. There's a small group of locals that play most weekends and have been maintaining the course throughout the winter. Current configuration is 18 holes using 13 tees and 10 baskets. NEFA folks are welcome to come out -- just send me a PM to set something up.
PS: I'm not aware of any work done at Pye over the last two storms, so I'm sure conditions are brutal there right now.
Pye Gates are now open. Important change however, please take note:
The Parks and Cemetery Dept. has had a nice 50% budget cut. One of the things they did in the past was pay a guy to unlock and lock the gate (as well as the other gated park in town) every morning and every evening.
We (Topsfield Athletic Association) are working on hiring someone to take over that responsibility. In the meantime, we have a somewhat patchwork system of covering the job. There is a combination to the lock (that I won't divulge here), and various sports heads are taking turns on locking up at the end of the evening.
The danger here is getting locked in!! As we play on the periphery of the park, we aren't always as visible as, say, a little league team. So you have to be careful and not plan your round so late that whomever locks the gate with you in the park because they didn't see you.
In other words, if you want to start at 7:00, park outside the gate. I believe there will be a sign telling you to call the PD if you get locked in. You could also call my cell (978) 852-5886, and I could rescue you.
Just a heads up. And of course, anybody who hooks up with me for a round.....well let's just say we got options. When's the next full moon?
Team NASA. Pye Brook Park-Amesbury Pines-Pulpit Rock-Clement Farm
i was just at pye brook yesterday and it was looking nice from the tourney on the 16 and 17th? sadly i didnt know about it... BRING BUG SPRAY it was kinda unpleasant yesterday with all the bugs but im heading back today probably around noon any one coming i will wait at hole one for a bit see you there
We were afraid to play it yesterday because we expected wet and muddy.
Instead we played Amesbury which was wet and muddy.
The snow has got to be all but gone so Pye is playable.
Played Pye yesterday and it is in great condition. The ponds are FULL, the tees are are in good shape, and the walking was dry. #18 is tougher than ever, but not under water. We played an alternate 19th hole (down the parking area) due to some flooding over by the fenced in pond. For a weekday, there were more groups out there than I've seen in while including some new faces.
Pulpit is also in good shape except for holes #13 and #14, the area that floods at the bottom of the driveway. #14 is still playable, but you need to carry the water on your drive. Much of #13's green is flooded, almost to the basket.
