Joralemon Park, Coeymans NY - Expanding to 36 holes !!!!

Post by Kevin Rounds »

The Coeymans Town Board has approved a plan to add 9 more holes and move 5 others on the current 18 hole course. The existing 18 hole course will be losing 5 wooded holes in a rare wildflower area and will replace those 5 holes plus nine more on the east side of the park, which has outrageous huge rocks, mature trees and great elevation change. This should make the future course one of the best venues in the east and a World Class 27 hole Championship Course. The course transformation should be complete within 2 months.

Great News Kevin!!!! The town is being so supportive. By moving the 5 baskets we save the rare wild flowers, and gain 13 new holes. The new holes are going to be amazing. Great job getting the town to agree to your requests.

It's unbelievable how far we're come, from a small handful of players back in late 2006 convinced the town to let them use the park for disc golf..........
LOOK AT US NOW !!!

Jammer I had 69 players
Jammer II had 85 players

Don't miss out on the J-Park Jammer III !!!!! Sign up now at Marshall Street

.........and J-Park Jammer IV in 2010 will be a HUGE event !!!!!!

Kevin,

Which present holes (numbers?) will be eliminated and about where will the new holes be (in relationship to the existing ones)?
Curious minds want to know!

The holes that will be lost are holes 14-18 in the woods. The area to replenish those holes and add 9 more will be to right of hole 7, as you play it, and across the road. The new area is wooded, huge rocks, mature trees and up and down. It is the area I wanted to obtain for use 3 years ago, because they were wanting to reserve the area for nature walks. Since there has been virtually no use there, we were able to get permission to use it. Thats what happens when 20 something guys raise over $600.00 and over 300lbs of food for the local food pantry at the ice bowl in our 3 annual ice bowl, and pick up everybody else's trash at the Park. We have earned the right to show the Town that they have made the right decision to utilize this beautiful area of their park. The topographic features are extreme, and it will be a challenge to create 13 or 14 holes that are not too dangerous for the novice golfer, yet give the experienced player all he can handle.

The area outlined in yellow is where the relocated and additional holes will go. For those who have not been here, the majority of the mowed area left of the street is where the course currently is.

On Sunday, 14 hard workers turned out to help shape the future of J Park. Benches, bridges, fairways & tee boxes sprouted up out of the woods to reveal some great new holes. Rock pillars stick out of the hilly landscape to make life tough for those who land behind them. The remains of 100-year old kiln can be seen from one of the tee pads.

After a brief lunchbreak, most stuck around for a tag challenge round where a course record on the modified 18(you'll see it at the Jammer III) of 52 by Tim Jiardini.

Sorry about the poor text quality, the story was split up across 3 different pages, then scanned and emailed to me. One of these days the Ravena News Herald will get themselves online.

Cool article. The town is very supportive of the course. They seem proud of what has transpired over the past 3 years. From zero financial support to $2600. Thank you Coeymans!!

Please try to make some true pro par four holes for Blue rated (950-level) players. I've played the Joralemon course before and it was a wonderful layout, but the holes really never varied from either deuceable par three holes to 'tweener' par 3.5 holes where a shortish approach shot was required. You were enthused to score a three on these tweener holes but the approach shot was rarely a full drive, and a score of four often still felt like a bogey.

Hopefully these 13 new holes on the east side of the park will allow you to create true pro par four (or even pro par five) holes to challenge all aspects of a golfer's game.

The new holes will balance the % of open-to-wooded holes to 40/60........... Par for the 27 holes will be mid 80's.

By the way, the course has already been modified(April 09) and have two par 4's. Hole #12 is 555'(we combined holes 12 & 13) and to make up for the lost hole we created a new hole off in the woods that's long and tight ending next to an OB creek.

We also moved the tee for 16(it was the 202' straight narrow ace run) to increase the course difficulty.

Hope to see ya at the Jammer in July, Jeff

just to clarify for y'all...
2 of these new or modified holes are among the 5 we are losing. so, come play them at the jammer or you'll never see em at all.

we'd also be happy to take out of towners on a tour of the new holes which we have been referring to as J Park East. it's pretty spectacular over there.

A recent review written at DGCR.com

Review By: optidiscic - played on 10/19/2009
Jurassic Joralemon

Pros: Set in a remote location,Joralemon Park, in an out of the way town, Coeymans, NY, and with 28 spread out holes over primarily disc golf territory your not ever gonna have to deal with crowds. This course though, at this writing, lacking in yuppie amenities does not need them as the disc golf here is so strong. The course has open big air shots, tricky approaches, fast greens, low ceiling rollers, short holes, long holes, deep woods holes, flat, rolling, uphill and downhill holes. The front 9 play flat and semi-open but theres a lot to keep you interested. Not a bad hole in this bunch as you play over well mowed lawns, near a stream and below and between beautiful park trees. Holes 4 and 9 provide some big arm fun as well as interesting approaches,#4 to the top of a boulder ridge after a long sweeping drive 460' past some sycamores and #9 a huge 567' couple of drives and then negotiating a tight doorway into the woods with a pretty green with a stream nearby. Then you cross a bridge and go to the other side of Starr Rd. This is where the magic starts. Holes 10-21 are some wonderful pure disc golf holes through a rolling forrest laden with huge boulders and old trees. Fairways not only meander up and down these old woods they are weaving between massive trees and carving immense boulders that form obstacles as well as fairways. The holes start out as clever technicical fun shots and then begin to get longer and more epic as you get closer to finishing with the woods on #21. Old mountain woods so not a lot of thorns or shule to punish you off the fairways. Your score will get hurt but you won't get scratched or frustrated by lost discs too much here. After 21 you cross back over Starr Rd. and back to the more traditional park atmosphere. Hole #22 is a nice breather, open ace run, after the woods. Hole #25 is a lovely fairway with low canopy. #26 enables you to air it out one last time 553' before finishing on the R turning low ceiling #27. There seems to be an active club making gradual upgrades here and the few locals I encountered were friendly helping me to find a disc hiding in some leaves. I can't say enough about the variety here...the perfect tournament course as it is spread out with 11 deep woods holes, a slew of more open holes, a sprinkling of rollers and no L/R advantage. I can't say enough on the premium disc golf here and the enjoyable peaceful atmosphere. The holes on the other side of Starr Rd' elevate this course to amongst the best I have played. Just a beautiful round.

Cons: The basic amenities that many require for perfection are not here. Gravel/natural tees. Attempts are in place to aid navigation but it was still tricky for a first timer and tee signs are not always present. Could use a few more places to sit out in the woods as your really hiking up and down hills out there. In the woods a few of the fairways could be improved if the SMALLER trees/branches were tamed a bit.....nothing drastic just a little pruning or taking out a few to better define greens and/or fairway.....this usually happens as a course matures though so it didn't bother me. There was some local riding his dirtbike all over the place which was a bit weird...but thats part of the character of out of the way America...I only mention it because I see others have remarked on this as well and it might be a pattern. The disc golf and fun play of this course really make up for any of these inconsequential gripes and all of these most likely will be rectified in time I am sure. It's just nice to play a course that was obviously designed by people who play the sport and understand what makes a fun course. Finishing 6 holes are wonderful but seemed really bland after all that fun in the woods.

Other Thoughts: I notice that many of the reviews for this course are set prior to the expansion across Starr Rd. Those 12 holes over there really blew me away so I am sure the rating for this course should be higher. After hole 11 you have a choice to play the more epic woods or finish with the final 6 holes of the course....you just have to decide to play 12A or 12b..it is clearly marked but if you don't have the stamina or your with children etc....playing the longer wooded 27 could be a grind as your really out in the woods and not near the lot for the rest of the day.

Finally got to play ALL of J-Park's new holes (yesterday at ~noon-4ish)
Overall, nice.
But they've (the designers) taken away quite a few overhands on the restructured holes :x .

Overhand Epics on 2, 7, 8, 14, 20, and 26. That's NOT that many on a 27-hole course!

New 7 makes the course flow better now. New 8 is OK. New 9 is well designed - in that it can yield 3's (with a good approach) but can yield 5's if you're corner-hooked.
The new woodsy holes are a different (than the rest of the course) bunch and "even things out" making J-Park pretty much an "even course"...except it's now even more biased toward low-ceiling type shots.

Also some "odd angles" (on some holes), but what the heck.

#19's tee shot is weird in that there appears to be a RHBH anhy route but the rest of my 5 some tried it and it's "not really there". Hmmm. I tried an overhand with limited success. And this on a 200' hole. It just seems like maybe 1 more tree should come down...but I'm not even sure WHICH tree that should be (will probably be determined by what predominant shot the designer wishes to be played there...to even out the "count" of types of shots on other holes, etc.).

and #21 is probably best played with a putter off the tee THEN pull out a fairway driver; not stupid, just different. And local knowledge sure helps. I threw the best RHBH in my bag towards what I thought was a auxillary outside line. WRONG. Sing-sing. Alcatraz. Nada.

Old 8 (new 22) has the tee moved back so no more overhands. Same with new 9 (tucked under a tree). Sure, kill me.

I was out all day yesterday Karl sorry I missed you. Yes 19 needs a little more trimming but the big rhbh anny is there I'm a noodle arm and have hit the wall at the base of the basket. Hole 21 is a shorter tee shot followed by a longer fairway approach. Yes if you throw too big here just off the left side of the fairway your in jail. You overhanded 14  It's a tightish downhill hole. (there a pic above with the pink ribbon.) I would have liked to seen that drive. Where abouts did your tee shot end up? Give us a heads up next time your coming we'll roll out the red carpet.

Thanks for the detailed review of your first round thru the J-27..... You low-ceiling description is just what I expected from the barely six month old woods holes......as Kenji explained, as time goes on things will continue to be trimmed & adjusted but as far as the sky-high Epic lanes, the pole saw only extends so far! :o

I would also like to see that overhand shot on 14, I never thought to look up for a lane on that hole.

19 was specifically designed as a RHBH anny- type hole(RH flick/LHBH hyzer also). I've parked that shot several times and also been denied by different trees along the way. Kevin has proven a few times that there IS a hyzer line from the tee but it's a narrow one.

Anyhow, glad to hear you brought a group out to play the new Jpark and would like to hear what they thought.

Naw, I didn't bring a group - I showed up* and there was a group of 9 looking for a tenth for 5 doubles teams. They all knew each other - I was the black sheep. They split us into A's and B's with me an A (no, I wasn't about to bag...and THIS was a case where I COULD have actually bagged...unlike the situation (just playing AdvM) where usually I'm accused of bagging).

*showed up at noon because I read somewhere that you guys do a noon doubles...but did I see a Tim, Scott, Greg, Jeff...NOOOOOO!!! Oh, well - some other time.

Kenji - actually, my "line" on 21 was outside the normal fairway...to the right of it (not left). And THAT is jail too!

Wasn't me........ i was on the road back from Michigan on Sunday @ noon. Bummer, i was actually thuinking of coming by the park too. Would've been there about 1pm though.

Sunday doubles has been pretty casual lately, I can't figure out exactly who you played with but that's a good thing....more new faces means a bigger turnout for the Ice Bowl, Jammer IV & J-Dubs Summer 2010.

Jeff,

Yeh, I'm terrible with names but all the guys except one seemed to be in the 20-35 age group. A couple were "first time here" 'ers but had stated they'd played (amongst other courses) Hyzer. All seemed to really like the course (J-Park)...but like Hyzer too! A couple of the guys there said, upon me mentioning if they knew about the new course going in in Scen's Central Park, "yeh, we're the one's putting it in...". They all seemed enthusiastic about the sport which was cool. But a 6-some for 27 holes took a LONG time.

Karl
Ps: I have to appologize to them for sending out a couple of loud @#$%s upon making a STUPID mental mistake that cost my partner and I probably 2 strokes. Man I hate it when I don't think! . Sorry.

Regardless, thanks again for the review and hope to see ya out there again sometime....
