Hello everyone. Felix and I, and then I and my oldest son did some clearing of hazardous trees and some encroaching and thorny rough over the last week. Most of the work has been done on 14-17, with some clearing on 7 & 8. With the snow nearly all gone in most spots (don't hold your breath), and recent temps in the high 30's the course has been playing very well and is a lot of fun. Andy Neal hit an ace on 2 last week, thats the third time that one has been tagged. Congratulations Andy ! Come out and play, we look forward to having folks out.
I did a clinic at Jackson Street School with 6 fourth graders that went really well, all of them should be able to play functionally after the next session (second Wed. in April, if anyone is intereested please let me know). Some of them are going to be quite good, nailing 25 foot putts on their first day, I was impressed. Overall the experience has been really positive, I encourage everyone to help teach some younger players the game.

I just noticed that this course was added to the PDGA directory. Looks like it is "official" now, can't wait to play it!

Northampton State Hospital WORK DAY
We are having a work day on Saturday fom 9-2. Some items on the schedule are;removal of invasive species, spreading woodchips to i.d. trails and prevent erosion, dig some holes for the new chainstars we just aquired, mow some fairways. If you are able to come, please do so. If you are local and have a mower, the more the merrier, pruning shears, gloves, and a good attitude are also welcome. We will most likely break off to play around 2 or 2:30pm. Refreshments will be provided.

Sorry to have missed yesterday. End of the semester + it being Mother's Day weekend intervened. In a week or so I will be a lot more free and would be glad to be involved in impromptu or otherwise course improvement activities.
By the way, course is both looking and playing great. It is ingeniously designed for minimal contact with all the dog enthusiasts-- is varied, challenging and fun. It is nice to see the new tee markers, especially on 14. The course is especially nice to play right now with the crabapples in blossom and their sweet scent.

Played a couple today. Nature is having her usual way, but appreciate mowed areas on 14 and 18, etc. Found new tee for 11; nice new position, and nice new Chainstar! Good to see the new one on 6 too. Played like the sinner I am first round, and a somewhat redeemed one second. ALMOST holed in one 18 (clanged off basket).
Thanks guys. let me know of any course maintenance gatherings, impromptu or otherwise.

DJ - I always love your input and appreciate your feedback and help. JJ and I are trying to rustle up a mowing event, as my dream maintenance team is not currently formed. OK here's my dream: Smith Vocational teacher realizes the great potential for student project and brings out their 85 horse tractor with 72" mowing bed and mows the entire course in 2-1/2 hours once in the spring(now would be nice) and once in the fall(End of September). The difficulty with this is that these are busy times for a school, beginning of the year and end of the year, and what happens during the summer? Second element of the dream team is somebody with a nice commercial unit, say 54 -60" rider, mows once a month during the summer, again, I can't imagine this would take longer than an afternoon, or two evenings per month, and would probably be real fun too. Considering reality is me and my 21" mulching mower, and Jason and his smallish equipment, how we get from point A to point B is another story. I may do some mowing Saturday, if it isn't too wet. Will keep you informed on more solid date for course maintenance. Now, isn't it time for a little therapy?

Springfield Republican Article
FYI - Felix and JJ are in an article that came out today on masslive.com - an article in the Springfield Republican "Neighborhoods Plus" section.
A friend of mine just forwarded the link...
http://www.masslive.com/search/index.ss ... 281750.xml
Unfortunately there are no pics online, but the printed piece reportedly had 4 or 5 with JJ and Felix in action and JJ with his full regalia of gear on display. Could you guys scan and post them sometime?
Bueno!
Looks like we should also ask Josh to link this piece and the CTNOW.com piece to the front of the NEFA page!

course maintenance
ANDY, BUCKET, thanks so much for your trimming on 6, 7, 8?, 15?
The course, is 6 inches away from being immaculate, fall and early winter should be stellar.
We are looking for a few good souls to help with some last umph cleanup before fall really gets here. Contact me if you can help.
The course looks execllent, please come and play.

The Northampton State Hospital Disc Golf Course is looking sweet, if I do say so myself. Between the farmer mowing 1, 13, 14 and 18 with his big tractor, and the 48" Bobcat loaner from Smith Voc, the course has not looked this good in a while. That Bobcat kicks butt, including mine after 6 hours behind it this past weekend. Come play, you won't be disappointed.

I am very pleased to report that the Nonotuck Disc Golf Club, Stewards of the Northampton State Hospital Disc Golf Course, has been asked to present to the Board of Trustees of the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School in February for acceptance into their plan to manage the land, in other words they are pleased with our efforts, they like us and they want to make it a more formal arrangement. They are interested in hearing about what our maintenance needs are, so that they may utilize the course for its educational opportunities. Thanks NEFA for all your help...don't hesitate to contact me or post here if you have any ideas for our portfolio. Once it's together we will be happy to share it with others.

Excellent Dave, I would love to play with you when we can work that out. I think you'll like the state of the course...of course there are rough prickly areas which you don't want to throw your disc into, such as deep left on 13, or right on 9, but this has more to do with impact on your score than anything else as in you'll have to fight your way out, rather than loss of plastic as you will probably be able to find your disc if you saw roughly where it went in.
New scorecard is at the publishers, same motif, but with slightly tweaked distances and map, and a few extra bits of info, plus whatever tasty scribblings said publisher manages prior to copying.
Enjoy, Felix

You can have up to 10 players on your roster. For a challenge, you need to have at least 6 players. Whomever you decide to have as your course representative typically decides the roster (or the team as a whole can decide)..ideally, you want your best six out there for any challenge (see official course vs course thread for rules). Each team sends a check for $100 to Joe Yaskis ($10 from each of the ten players on your roster). for an end of the year party and trophy. You can have less than 10 players, it just means each player will haveto pony up a little more. So far there are six teams involved and we drew tags at random, so if you were to join, you would automatically have the 7th tag (barring any other new comers before you). You can check out the official rules for details. Good luck!

Some Year End Therapy
Played the "Bin" last Saturday and came away suitably sedated and ready to start the new year.
In the process, noted two things:
1) The short basket for Hole 8 is missing.
2) Found a pair of loppers on the fairway of Hole 17. Anybody lose a pair?
