NHL 2009

Post by Ryan Brunelle »

Bruins looked super soft last night, sorry B's fans. Piss for poor opening game. Was hoping for something more entertaining. Kessel's departure is a huge hit offensively. Gonna be hard to replace his stats. Defense looked pretty weak too except for the second period. Ovechkin is f'n nasty. Not a whole lot you can do to stop him. Give him an inch and he'll score every time. Most likely the best player on the ice for yet another year. Will go down as one (if not the) greatest player to play the game. Sabres open Saturday...hoping for big things this year, but cautiously optimistic. Would be nice to at least make the playoffs. They got a rookie on defense an inch shorter than Chara and supposedly has better puck skills. Psyched that hockey is back!!! Its a loooong summer when your team misses the playoffs...

Ya that wasn't a great game by the B's. I figure it'll take some time to figure out what kind of offense they will have without Kessel. He was a big part of the offense, but I still think they can make up for his loss with solid play from Bergeron, Savard, Sturm, and Lucic. Krejci, once he's full strength, has what it takes to single handedly take over Kessels role. He may not have the burst and "wow factor" that Kessel has, but Krejci is no doubt a solid offensive player. Bitz showed a ton of potential last year, as did Blake Wheeler. Out of those two, I think Bitz will prevail. Throw in Kobasew and Ryder up front and they have a potent offense.

Their defense is still good.

You said it best...Ovechkin is just nasty. Unreal skills.

He toyed with Lucic on his second goal last night...

Agreed. I was so excited for the game but had to turn the channel because the Bs were making me sick. They will pull it together and Kessel will be quickly forgotten. I loved the deal getting 3 draft picks for him.

Ovie is dirty. Never thought about your statement before Ryan, but you are right. He could go down as the greatest ever. F- Crosby, he is a :cat:

Ovechkin is one of 3 players to win back to back Hart trophies...the other two being Bobby Orr, and Wayne Gretzky

When his career is done, he will no doubt be one of the top 5 players to play the game, with the potential to be the best ever.

People say he's a punk, and a d-bag, but Ovechkin has also won the Pearson award the last two seasons...meaning he was voted MVP by the PLAYERS. Kids got skill...but Sid's the one with the trophy that matters...

No doubt Ovechkin is a punk and a d-bag, but he is a brilliant hockey player. I would love to find an inflatable Ovechkin punching bag cause he just frustrates the sh$t out me (when he plays buffalo). When he scores 2 goals against the b's, well, he's brilliant....Crosby isnt exactly a bust and is definitely #3 behind Ovechkin and Malkin. Malkin is sick to watch...Crosby is a big fat :cat: Hang out in the crease and get more BS goals....

well....at least the Sabres won't challenge like the Jets are doing in the AFC East.

Bruins had more turnover then I realized on the backline.
Letting go of Ward and Montador will hurt early in the season, but Morris/Hunwick/Boychuk can easily quadruple the output in points of those two.
So there is tradeoff and adjustments early. I was a big Kessel fan, but he is a little guy without a mean streak. Wheeler can be better, Sturm back, and more Bergeron this year, and the 36 goals will be forgotten. Ryan, is it true Hawerchuk, LaFontaine and are back this season to help out Muffalo?

Loved seeing the Sharks get whupped last night!

last saturday night vs carolina was a great beat down at all levels of the game...it's good to see they hold grudges... that's the B's we know... I wasn't at all too worried after the season opener vs washington... you could tell they were too nervous and flat... they're gonna kick ass this year(just stay healthy)

As for ovechkin, he could finish his career arguably top 5 ever... but to be side by side with gretzky (and super mario, who I think if he had an injury free career and played as long as gretzky, would've been the best ever, but that's a whole other conversation) he's gotta do some crazy things throught his career, like score 80 goals and 215 points!!!

I was flipping channels between baseball and hockey last night. I really love watching Ovechkin play hockey. At his current pace, he will score 137 goals and 109 assists for 246 points. That is a Gretzky-like performance. I know it is only 3 games, but why not?

I really wish he was a B!

Helps that Sid's got Malkin... Sid would be NOTHING without him. I agree with Ryan on this one. Ovechkin, is the best, people don't understand his personality, because he's russian, I read quite a few articles about his upbringing with the Commies. That's why he's not understood. Crobsy is just soft and huggable, that's why people like him.

That would be exactly 3 points per game on avg.

B's can't seem to avoid the injury bug this year, but they did make a deal with the devil. Miroslav Satan.

Patrice out 2-6 weeks with a thumb.. Lucic is due back soon...

Satin was a stud for Buffalo for years...Guaranteed 30 goals...but he got lazy and never recovered. You'll be lucky to get half a dozen goals out of him this year. Not the Bruins year, sorry guys....

Are the bruins just giving up for the year? how do you let a guy whos been out for 11 games come back and score 3 goals? weak... Sabres need better competition from the division. Its getting boring beating up on all the western conf teams...

I'd rather them have trouble early in the season and come together as a team as the season develops. The loss of Kessel shouldn't have hurt them too much, but they just can't get healthy. They have a good team, but haven't had the chance to have their top players on the ice for an extended amount of games. Savard, Lucic, Bergeron, Ference, Sturm...and now Bitz is hurting. I know there are more i'm forgetting.

Satan has been solid since they added him...they need that.

The 1-2 punch of Thomas and Rask is solid, not worried about goaltending.

It's been so tough to watch. They show flashes of the potential this team has, and other times they are just awful.

I'm not giving up on this team.

Slowly...

Seems like every time someone comes back from injury...another man goes down.

Once Savard comes back and Bergeron and Lucic are 100%, I think they will have some solid lines out there, and will shake off the offensive cobwebs.

I really thought they were going to win when they called off the kicked in goal. When they gave up the weak goal to tie it, I gave up and luckily turned it off.

It seems like when they get a lead they play well, then one little lapse in D or a bad pass in the nuetral zone and oops all tied up.. I agree this team has no heart!! They need Savy back!!

I do blame that loss on the Refs. last night though. Double minor high sticking penalty when it was'nt even Lucic's stick..worse was it was'nt even a Bruin.. not even same color stick, black vs blue!! oh well!! When it's going bad that's what happens..Time to Man up now!!

Yeah, um, Ryan Miller is the man. I know it's not "NHL", but still, the guy stood on his head, I have another point... why doesnt the NHL adopt the Olympic Rules? Is it the bloodthirsty nature of Americans, and need for hitting and slowing the game down?

I'll tell you what, I watched the Czechs vs. Russia today and the Canada vs. USA game, and both were intense, back and forth and insanely good hockey... is this a result of the players on the ice? i.e. all NHL All Stars for the most part, ecsp on the 4 teams I just mentioned? Or the rule differences?

I mean, there were great defensive plays, great offensive plays, etc.. there seems to be more scoring chances, more free flowing passes, etc, I understand that passing and line rules are different, as well as a couple other things that free up play, but WHAT a brand of hockey, exciting from start to finish!

Ex Badger Brian Rafalski leading the way offensively.

The NHL does play Olympic style hockey... at the All-Star game. I could see the rules changing but not sure it would be enough to save the league.
