Post by Matt Heenan »

I'm a recent convert to the roc and don't know why I havent been throwing them all along. I know some people like the buzz, but I'll never go back

I first started playing with a buzzz, then got hold of a Roc.

Tried the buzz again a while ago and just don't like it.

I'll throw an Ontario Roc, or a San Marino Roc...usually a San Marino.

I've actually been straying from those though, and have been using a Skeeter or Aviar for mid-range/approach shots.

Only time I really use the SM Roc is for a turnover approach shot.

Im a buzz guy. Some reason I seem to flip over my roc more than my buzz and I have more control with my buzz. Only time I throw a roc is when I need to throw a big anhizer, it holds the line mint.

What makes Rocs awesome is that they start out really beefy, which allows you to throw them in a headwind.

As they beat up they slowly get flippy and this makes them really easy for me to see a line and pick which one of the 4 rocs in my bag will take that line.

I liked the buzzz, but it never game me a complete midrange game like Rocs do.
that's right, I still post here

They are both great. It all depends on your throwing style. The buzzz is better as an out of the box disc. The roc is better if you like to keep them at various stages of wear, it takes a while to get a roc beat to straight and a buzzz does this right away without changing much (unless you are throwing a d or x one which will season pretty quick). The buzz will be better for you if you are a line drive type thrower (it's better on lower lines than a roc becuase of it's added speed, it's ALMOST a fairway driver). The roc requires a higher line to reach the same distance as a buzzz and if you can throw the higher line the roc is a beautiful thing. I like to describe the buzzz as a roc without the breaks.

On another note there are so many different types of rocs that it can get confusing. You can just grab any new buzzz and it flies like a buzzz no headaches. You will need something to go with a buzzz for a headwind though. The rocs you can just use a new one for that and keep the minimal approach. 1 new one seasoned one beat and have all the lines covered.

I throw buzzes one z, 2x and a champ gator to go with them, this covers all the lines like Allen described he does with his rocs.

its by the sweeds, kinda like a buzz, rock

and bobby you tried the stalker???

i seen paul sully throw it on that down hill hole at maple hill 400ft hole

i think it like 14 blue goes down straight then has a ditch before basket

well anyways he parked it and put an ace run down that stalker fly's on a frozen rope very far it does not seem to flip out like the buzz or sidewinder

you can find the champ cobras everywhere now. Glow champ ones too. They fly like a really beat roc. They have the same top as a q sent so this makes a great mid range combo. Cobra and qsent you can throw a lot of lines with that and they feel really similar.

Z Buzzz all the way. Also, the new Glow Buzzz is great and seems to be more stable for me.

As far as headwind drives are concerned, the Z Wasp is basically the same mold as a Roc but cheaper. I also like the flat top versus the dome of a KC.

The Stalker has become a money disc in my bag. I have found it exactly as advertised: a longer stable Buzzz. Whenever there was a hole where I could almost reach with my Buzzz, I can now ace run with the Stalker. Some guys out here have called it a stable leopard.

I agree with Shawn that the Roc is beautiful if you have space to glide. I've seen BIG arms absolutely crush a KC Pro on downhills. However, the Buzzz is fantastic on low ceiling-hallway shots.

Aviar, KC, gets me to the flat area, Roc if I feel frisky and want to put it in scoring range.

Both are $ discs, because mid-ranges are $$$. I typically evaluate the path I need to throw on a 1-5 scale and pick the disc accordingly.

1 = sharp left = gator
2 = fade left = roc
3 = dead straight = Z Buzz
4 = tip to the right = Warn X Buzz
5 = hard right = Beat DX Wolf

This has worked so well lately, I'm beginning to replace drivers with these mid-ranges because the control trumps the extra 50' of distance with 25' of fade I get with the driver.

However, the Roc is getting beat in and behaving like the X Buzz on hard throws so I may pick up the new Star SM roc. Seems like players have tons of love for it already.

I likea the buzz in FLX plastic. Starts stable and tunes in nice and slow. don't have to adjust disc angle to adjust for 4 different rocs. A comet, drone and viper complete the package.

I am a Roc thrower.

I carry 4-5 at any given time, All DX.

2 "Ching" Rocs.
2 DX

1 175, beat, will go straight if thrown with hyzer flip, flips if needed, in my bag b/c it will fly longer anhyzer lines than my Stingrays.
1 180, DX "Big Bird" Straight flyer, fades slightly at the end of the flight.
1 174, Buddha "Ching". Straight as a string. Doesnt typically turn, unless forced over.
1 Rancho Roc. Tweener, gives me an option inbetween my straight Rocs to my QSent.

Starting to work on my KC Pro I recently bought. Have a couple SM Throwers and a couple DX SM's as well, love the feel of these in your hand, but don't li,e the flight characteristics...

It's not that I don't like the Buzz, I tried it for a quite a while, the ESP plastic was my favorite. For me, I think my arm speed has me throwing Rocs vs. the Buzz. It's slightly faster, so, in order for most to get it straight, you need to throw it harder than the Roc...

there are just too many rocs available for me... ontario, classic, san marino, super, not to mention 5 or 6 different plastics... then don't even get me started on domey vs flat etc etc... i just don;t have the time or money to spend beating in a perfect pro roc, then lose it.

i've really been enjoying the Comet lately. i still have a Z buzzz if the situation calls for it, but the Comet can really hit some sick lines. only thing it doesn't do well is wind/overstable type stuff, but i have other discs for that.

so, i vote buzzz with a big asterisk that says 'Comet'.

Weird

Post by Mike Clark »

This may sound weird but it seems like my buzz will "crawl" toward the basket when it lands. I have noticed it "crawl" up to 10 feet straight at the base of the pole after it lands which is nice when I am just trying to get into my comfort zone.

Oh yeah I think they fly nice too. I sent my buzz about 800 feet down a hole on the peak at sugarbush. The Roc has too many variations and rarely comes in durable plastics.

There's 3.

Rancho. Overstable. (Wasp)
San Marino. Straight out of the Box. (X or ESP, Buzz)
Ontario. Understable. (Comet)
Super Roc. Stable (Z-Buzz)

Also available in Star, Pro, Champion, DX, Special Blend. I don't know about not being available in durable plastics.... pretty easy to get as well.

Got my champ for $10, got my star for $15, got my DX's for $7.

Don't know where you are coming from man.

im not going to say that there is too many variations of roc or anything silly like that. i dont throw a buzz because im too confused by all the roc choices.
i just think it feels better in my hand, it flies 50+ feet farther and it can hold any line out of the box. if you are the type that puts the disc on the line you want it to hold and dont want to rely on hyzer flip ups the buzzz IS the disc.
a z buzzz is never going to be a do its own work anny disc but it stays true on the spectrum between slight anny and slight hyzer. Its the BALLS

There are a lot of roc variations, but not so many that it makes it confusing. You have overstable, understable, and stable rocs. All in varying amount of of durability with the different plastics.

Rocs FTW
Aces or Eights!!!
