The Katana is sslightly faster and more understable than a Boss. Flies a freakin' mile, just like the Halo, which is a variation of the same theme.

The Nuke, by contrast, is massively fast and, for me, massively overstable. Fades so hard left you've got to give it a miniscule glide rating. If we were really good at training dogs -- which, obviously, we aren't -- we could teach the dogs to chew just the Nuke and not other discs, except maybe beat-up fastbacks.

A faster XCaliber. Will handle any headwind blah blah blah it fades at the end so hard it's useless for about 98 percent of all players. Skips left and left and more left on snow crust virtually forever so that it actually eventually comes right back to the spot you threw from.

Discraft has a lot of great discs. This isn't one of them.

does anyone know when they plan on releasing production runs, at normal prices? i find it hard to spend that much money on a disc that might/probably not end up in my bag. guess i'm a little cheap.... i usually reserve money for special stamps that go to local shops and events.

are we gonna see a pyramids or utopia stamped katana in the future?

Utopia Disc Golf Katanas should be in after the new year, but they'll definitely be coming as soon as they're available.

Thanks for the response and comparison jason,
i was thinking about giving the nuke a try since disccraft gives it the same stability rating as their surge ss, albeit a faster disc which i thought might make it comparable to a regular surge.
i will probably get one anyway just for the cool color/stamp.

Happen to throw a 160g R-Pro Boss at West T on hole six and put it in the woods behind the basket, hole is 375' or so. I bairly got on it and the disc flipped over then flatten out and then came out of it in the end. I was surprised how fast that disc was and how It didnt nose dive. Bought a 164g to see if I can get on it more than the 160g one I have. May have found my disc to make up for my back problem to get me to be back to where I was throwind that "D" with a 175g Star Destroyer early last summer.

The woods and the Katana are like oil and water. Before all this snow hit, and the fields near work were clear I tried to "master the Katana" per Innova's suggestion everyday at lunch time.

This disc can be your best friend or worst enemy. If you're playing an open course on a calm day, carry a Katana. If the course is wooded or there's tons of wind, flip it over and use it as a tray to roll your... hey now... b/c that's it's only use.

If there's a headwind, this thing will flip over and die faster than a beat in R-Pro Boss. If there's no wind or a slight tail wind, this disc will make you think you're working out at the gym again (at least for me :cat: ). My ~325' range just grew to 350'+.

I tend to agree with Innova that it truely is a Sidewinder on steroids. I throw it flat, maybe a little hyzer, and it's getting the full flex. I dig it, but it's a full flex disc, not a straight-laser disc so only open holes for me + Katana.

Nuke all the way. Great glide and super speed with a level of HSS that is predictable in almost any wind condition. A faster flash. Ive thrown the Katana a few times in the open and wasnt impressed. Probably a good choice for throwing in a big open field with a strong tailwind. Unpredictable.

People are telling me I should give the Nuke another try, that it's actually not that overstable and that it has great glide. Adam also said great glide.

One thing that screwed up my scientific test (aside from the fact that one guy throwing a disc back and forth in a field is basically as unscientific as it gets), was that as soon as the Nuke arrived, I snatched a 170g before we weighed them to determine their ACTUAL weight. Then afterwards I weighed our now "demo" Nuke and it actually weighed 173 point something. That's a little heavy for me...until spring comes and I start pumping the massive iron.

The two Katanas I got were 171g and 173g I believe. I had a feeling the light ones were going to be flippy, like a beat up R-Pro Boss, so I went heavier and I think that definately helped.

I've thrown both a handful of times... The first time I threw the Katana was in the field at HCC, I let it go almost verticle (knowing it was very understable) and it flipped ALL the way over FAST and rolled to the soccer goal at the other side of ther field.
The first time I threw the Nuke was at the Flatrock Ice Bowl and I LOVED it. It came out of my hand faster than my Boss ever did, not sure if the sound barrier was broken. It acctually held the same line as my Orc(???) which I was not expecting at all. I may have put alittle more snap on it knowing how fast it was.

Overall, I will by a Nuke before I buy a Katana but both will probablly end up in my bag at some point. (oh wait, Derek B. told my that I am not ALLOWED to throw a Katana  )

Initial field tests indicate that the Nuke will probably be a Boss killer for this guy. I was crushing it today at Maple, nice slight hyzer flip with a ton of carry, me likes!

i just got a chance to toss my katana for the first time. i live right down the st from wickham so i took it there.

off the alt tee of 8 i flicked a pretty angled hyzer straight at the trees ahead. he held it till about 60 ft from the trees and just dipped left, finally caught back around and landed like 80 ft from the basket just at the curve of the tree line  wow

I'm not familiar with hole 8 at Wick because I've never been there but I'm guessing the end result was good? But if I kept every disc I threw one good shot with I'd be carrying almost every Discraft disc I've ever thrown. That's lot of discs. I have a question about the Katana... If this disc is sooo flippy right out of the box, what good will it be when its beat to sh!t? Maybe for a 60mph tailwind?

Adam have you thrown a Katana? I'm sure you have, you seem like a huge hater of it. Now I haven't thrown a Nuke, but I am going to very soon, well not very soon, more like April (Back surgery sucks) but I have 2 of them coming and I will test them vs. my Katana's. Now I love the Katana for wide open holes cause the sucker will glide FOREVER if thrown right.

I know of the alt tee for #8 at Wickham and I just cant' see throwing a flick Katana there. But that's me....I would throw a RHBH Wraith on that hole.

Either way we all have our opinion on the Katana, I can tell you Adam that they are pretty flipping right out of the "box" but with how I use it, it's unlikely to get to beat up cause it won't be hitting too many trees because I only use it on really open holes.

However with that said I am really interested in trying the Nuke out. I'll put my comparison findings up when I can throw full power again.

Tim,

Call me silly, but from what / how Brett described, the only way I see it is that he's a lefty. No?
If not, well, I'm blind. (yeah, we knew that anyway).

My thoughts - having thrown both, but not extensively - is that they aren't really the same disc.
Katana is more understable than the Nuke...sort of like a faster Sidewinder. The Nuke is more like a faster Wraith.

Both are very fast...and squirrelly.

I'm not hatin on the Katana. You're right, everyone has different taste. I've thrown my nuke quite a bit and I don't think its squirrely at all. Hey Tim...is the Black Nuke a 2010 fund-raiser disc with the yellow stamp? Ill buy it if your interested. I wanted a black one but couldn't find one so I bought 2 orange ones. Maybe a trade?
