Bag Review

Post by Mike Murphy »

Has anyone bought, or know someone who has bought the Gorilla Boy Simian bag?

I own the Silverback and its the best bag I've owned and I would love to pick up the Simian if someone speaks well of it.

Its everything you need in a bag and according to reviews online its really light.

It is a seat in itself. the top is padded and can support 350lbs.

the side pockets are bladder compatible or can hold 2 discs each. and has hidden "stash" pockets on the inside.

and gorilla boy quality is second to none IMO. I've pretty much made up my mind, but I would like to hear of a first hand review before I buy anything.

The seat thing does make it more appealing to me but i'd end up packing more into the bag and my bag is heavy enough.........

The website says it only holds 12 discs in the main area ? Seems like a lot of wasted space with how big it LOOKS.

I read reviews saying people could fit 12-15, plus 4 on each side which is about what I carry anyways.

its $200 which is more than the rev bag, but if it acts as a seat and can hold a bladder thats worth the extra money IMO.

compatible w/quads too.

but like I said, until I hear a first hand review I'm not buying anything.

haha!

I could care less how big it looks as long as it doesn't FEEL that big or heavy, which is what I'm reading in reviews. The fact that you can use either the regular back pack straps or the quads is cool. Quads practically halve the weight of a bag anyways.

I think Pete Johnson has one as well.

I loved my Silverback for almost 3 years now and it held up great, will be a great backup/loaner for friends.

i love my revo dual pack, up to a 30 disc capacity. and my clearwater chair, that is exactly like the huk lab chairs, just has a blue top. oh yeah, forgot storage of other things as well...

if that monstrosity only carries 12-15, i think it's a waste. I've heard good things about the Gorrila Boy. But that thing looks crazy, wonder how they support that much weight and how long the bag lasts, bags aren't meant to be sat on. I clip my chair to my bag.. a quick two seconds.. chair out, pick up my bag, chair coming with me... otherwise I just carry it, not a big deal. That seems to the be the big seller for this bag.

PS, I can make my Revo Dual "bladder compatible"

its actually really sturdy its a PVC frame and the cushion is really soft . oh and from what i hear you can fit 47 disc in it  . and why would you want to carry a chair if you dont have to. bags are NOW meant to be sat on, well good ones atleast :D

I'd like to see the details on the research for the frame. Sure, PVC is great out of the box brand new, when reinforced, I used it in MANY, MANY applications, in cool, hot, wet, dry combinations. The engineers I worked with always mentioned, it's good to a point, however, one application that was tough for PVC in extended periods of time was it's ability to maintain rigidness when used in a weight bearing situation.

I'd be interested to see what schedule piping they used and how long the bag was tested before it was put on the market for sale.

I'd rather also not look like a Mountaineer on the golf course, My revo is fine, holds everything I need and I don't mind attaching a 1 pd aluminum chair that I know will be more weight bearing longer than anything made out of PVC.

Abel let me sit on the simian. i'm a big guy 6' 4'' 260 pounds, the bag held me up but i wouldn't sit on it again. wouldn't trust it. seems like a lot of money just for the novelty of the seat.

on the plus side, the thing is only half as big as i thought it was going to be. i originally thought it was gonna be a mountaineering pack too. i'd say the size is comparable to the rev backpack.

last thing, tip that thing over and out come the discs. might accidentally bump into it at the next team challenge.

Yeah, the picture probably makes it look bigger than it really is. My discs dont fall out when my bag tips over as well.

Also Cheef, Pete Johnson's bag is a "Mystery Ranch" Bag, not a Gorilla Boy. Now that thing has some serious options, and can carry 40 discs, has way more compartments, and has an umbrella holder so you don't have to carry your umbrella. I've seen Pete's bag, it's sick, manufactured by a former "outfitter" and backpack maker, not a guy that got into the industry and has a small team. Granted, never heard anything bad about Gorilla Boy, but this Co. has a track record that is more proven. Also, it weighs in at 4.5 pds total, I bet that's what the Simian Frame weighs in at.

Personally, I'd much rather have the mystery ranch bag, atleast he tells me what it's made out of! The Gorilla Boy list is that of a person starting a Co. You can tell the guy at Mystery Ranch has been producing high end packs for a long time.

The above specifics lists were directly cut and pasted from the Company Websites.

that mystery ranch bag is super sick. pete was showing it to me at flat rock ice bowl and ive been checking it out ever since but the only thing holding me back is a heavy price tag. $250 ouch. so maybe ill wait a year and hope for a Gen2 that is even sicker with the same life time warranty

i wasn't aware that mystery ranch had a bag in the works. when i read that i was very interested. then i checked it out HERE and am underwhelmed.

When I first heard of Mystery Ranch (99?) they were producing interchangable packs. Basically you'd buy a custom fit suspension harness, and then buy pack bags that would attach. Therefore you'd be able to have a day pack, weekend pack, and expedition pack that all fit you properly. thought it was a great idea. Didn't last though. Not sure why, but I'd imagine the steep price had something to do with it.

Anyhow, while I see a few features on this pack that interest me, IMHO it in no way justifies the exorbitant price tag. Waterproof zippers and an umbrella holder are nice, yes, but are not enough to get me to even consider dropping $250+ on a DG bag...and this is coming from a guy who owns at least 7 different backpacks of varying sizes and applications.
This bag may have better suspension than any other DG bag on the market, but since we rarely walk more than a couple hundred feet between holes a pair of quad shocks seem fine to me. also, if i'd move to a backpack style bag, i prefer the vertical layout of the revo dual over the horizontal orientation of this bag.

just my .02

Whats your deal, I am simply stating my opinion? I said nothing bad about Gorilla Boy, just that I'd rather have the mystery ranch bag and that I would be interested in the amount of research and study that went into the PVC frame on the Simian, That TOO DIFFICULT to understand?

I know many players that have switched to GB, and they love them. Not my cup of tea, sorry, I go with long time reputations over small crew and limited reputation. Sorry I touched a nerve with clearly a superior product with the Mystery Ranch Bag, again, IN MY OPINION.

Plus it's MY OPINION and in this new god damn liberal country.. people can say whatever they damn please. And just like Cheef, I do what I want on the message board... It's my opinion, and how I would go about buying a bag, that is all..

I hear ya, I've seen Petes as well, it's pretty nice, and well put together, I've tried it on, it sits very nice. But, it's not $250.. it's more like $285, I too like the more horizontal fit, sometimes walking through the woods up here the fastest path to a disc involves squeezing between some trees, the width of the bag might be much for tightly wooded courses up here, but it's still superior to GB. IN MY OPINION ABEL.

my .02 cents. jesus.

REVO Dual Pack-Lite....any owners care to comment?

it weighs 3 pounds less than the PDGA Tour Bag I have and very
much enjoy, though it has a couple holes forming from probably
carrying way too much stuff in all the awesome pockets.

that mystery ranch golf bag is pretty insane. all their gear is.
now i want a new backpack I don't need....
