Suggestions for 2010-11

I thought we could consolidate suggestions for next year somewhere.
-I was thinking I think it would be fun to play alternate shot in doubles rather than best disc. There is a lot of pressure on every shot in alt. shot, and restricts the ability of one person to carry a team. Sounds fun to me.
-I think finals would be nice at a centralized predetermined course even if it may be home course to a team. The location could be rotated. Then the benefit of having the best record could be one of many options. Maybe the team with the best record gets to count / play one extra score / player during finals, and drop their worst score.
Just ideas!

Alt shot would be a great idea. I know that format is very tough, maybe we could tweak it a bit.

If both captains agree, there is no reason why you could not have alternate shot replace best disc in your next match.
Personally, I would be against mandating a move to alternate shot. Best disc is fun and creates comradeship within the team. My experience with alternate shot is that your partner can quickly become your enemy. That is not the spirit on the TC.

Isn't it in the current rules that captains can agree on alternate formats?
edit: yes it is.
• Standard format is Match Play singles and Best Disc Stroke Play for doubles. Captains can agree to whatever they want, if they can’t agree this is the default.

Good point guys

Why would your partner become your enemy? If I'm playing with James for example, and he is hitting first available every time, I'm gonna do my best to try and pick him up. Just like I would expect of him. There would still be plenty of camaraderie.

Alt shot = less golf

alternate shot sucks, imo. I hate throwing half the shots in the course of the round.

Have you ever played alternate shot? Last time I did I nearly offed my partner.... and he was my 12 y/o son!
It is not nearly as fun playing half the game and there's no letting your partner wrap you in a warm blanky for 6 holes when you forget how to throw the disc.
James' point about showing the best all around skill is spot on though.

I agree with Laner, alternate shot would be fun....
Maybe 9 holes alt. shot, 9 holes best disc.
Alternate shot doesn't suck at all.....Bear,Matt
It exposes weaker players.
Don't get me wrong, alt. shot is CHALLENGING but....
We r playing in a Team CHALLENGE, its supposed to be.
IMO

jus sayin....

Never played alt shot before; would I assume you would play from the worst lie every other hole?

by Matt DeAngelis
No. Player A throws off the tee. Player B takes the next shot from where the first throw landed. Player A then plays from where Player B's throw landed. And on and on it goes...not very fun IMO.

No you alternate who shoots between the partners,1 shot per lie.
Ya what he said,

With the roster sizes increased to 15. The min required for a challege should be increased to at least 10 players.

I can see forfeits in Team Maples future

I think that's too high of a number. Sometimes [bleep] happens and a team can't field everyone. I don't see every team always being able to come up with 10, especially since not everyone has the full 15 to begin with. I agree that 6 sounds small, but its a concrete number that can always be met. Maybe bump up the requirement by one or two at most.

I was gonna throw "8" out there.
John's right...[bleep] happens...you know never know when you're gonna slip and break an ankle or something

(sorry you couldn't make it down to B'land)

Haha
Yes, maybe 8. The last thing anyone wants is not being able to even have a match because a team is short of the min. requirement. That's one good thing about is being at 6, forfeits should never come into play.

It just sucks when a team only shows with 6-8 people and you have to sit players. It favors the team that only brings the 6 guys. It would actually be a really good strategy to only go with your 6 best to away matches (would I do this no......but I could.) There is lots of lead time going into challenges and with a roster of 12-15 players there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get 10 people there. Get people on the team who want to play and will show up. Even increasing to 8 is a step in the right direction. If injuries are the problem you can make a roster move and replace that person. Even if it's only for one match.

We talked about declaring your roster for the next match like 24 hrs in advance. It won't eliminate sitting players but you can plan ahead. Maybe tell some to just show up for dubs or singles.
I have the same problem, we roll 15 deep every match!!

And so do we. It makes a much better experience for everyone with more players.

stroke play for singles?

I would love stroke play for singles, but I just like singles stroke the most out of any format. Match play IS fun, but to me it actually removes some strategy because you don't have to think ahead since you're playing the opponent not the course.
That said the TC is the ONLY place I play match play so the novelty is nice. I would play singles stroke, but I have nothing against match.

yeah i dunno, my opinion is that match play doesn't 'transfer' over to DG as well as it plays in ball golf.
let's say you have the following front nine scores at panthorn:
3-3-4-2-4-3-2-3-4 +1 28
that'd be a pretty decent, conservative score for me, let's say going OB on 6 and laying up on the longer holes, and a good drive on 8.
player B shoots:
2-5-3-2-3-3-2-5-3 +1 28
player B bombs hole 1, totally f's up hole 2, nice 3 on 3, F's up 8 trying to be a hero, but gets a great 3 on 9... all over the place.
stroke play: tied. match play: player B is up 2 through 9.
I like playing match play too, but as a judge of player and team ability, ehh.
It would also be cool to see each player's raw score for certain courses, and for your own records and such. Someone could have shot a singles course record somewhere and who knows. Something to consider anyway.

I personally enjoy match play, like James said, its the only time most of us will ever get to play it. I like the fact that the team challenge mixes it up some. Its a fun change considering every tournament is stroke.

I hear what you guys are saying. Some things I had not thought of before. I have always enjoyed match play for the intensity of going head to head against your opponent. Many of you were not around when we did match play for NEFA finals. Set up like a bracket tourney, single elimination. It was intense and lots of fun (Just ask Lick how much fun it was). If we did stroke play, what would be the point of match-ups? Just do it like a X country meet every time. That way all players could play, and you would be rewarded for having all team members play. Top 6-8 scores count, play as many as you have. I still like the match up aspect. Adds strategy to the pairings and every hole can be pressure packed in match play. Also, a blow up hole does not ruin your round.
