New course green lit for Lufbery Park in Wallingford!

We just left the park and rec commission meeting where they informed us that the town has approved our application for a course. Most of the funding is being raised privately and a good portion has been secured (enough for 9 baskets and tee signs). We hope to start clearing for the first few holes within the month. We hope to have a face book page up and running in the next few days.

Thats great, I'm sure we will need all the help we can get. I will try to give as many updates as possible as I am relatively new to the whole forum thing. My wife is very patient with me and will be walking me through Face Book which I hope will be a valuable tool as well. The Park and Rec director will be contacting the Record Journal for a story that should touch on the new course. Also I would like to thank Joe P. for all his help when this Idea was in it's infancy.

I work right over in Meriden, that's awesome news guys. Like Zoro, I don't have a ton of free time but would love to try and make a workday or 2 and see the course when it's in.

Congrats!!

Congratulations!!! Great to hear about another dg course off the Merritt Parkway. Lately I've been playing Orange on my way home from Hartford. And I am looking forward to Veterans in Bridgeport. Now I'll have another course to choose from - what great options!!! Gotta love this grass roots push for more courses.

Looks like Lufbery is mostly wooded, unless the open area to the north is also part of the park. I've never been to this park, but based on its size depicted on google maps it looks like 9 holes would be about right.

The park is 42 acres and has been approved for 18. We are planning for the first 9 this year. It is mostly wooded but the majority is old growth with easily removable underbrush. I would say it has half to 3/4 the density of panthorn.

Ok, my mistake. Assuming it's mostly all useable (no major wet or environmentally sensitive areas), 42 acres is plenty of space to put in 18. AWESOME!!!

After our initial walk through we were happy to see how well the area handled the rain. The bulk of the park is set on somewhat of a peaked piece of land that rests on the side of a much bigger incline. (If that makes any sense)

We just started a facebook page for the course. There's not much to it yet but you can find it by searching wallingford disc golf. We will be having official work days as soon as the town's risk manager comes up with a plan for some sort of blanket insurance policy. It's a bit of red tape but we figure whatever it takes to get it done is fine by us.

Stoked, Jason

We are happy to announce the 99% completion of the first hole at The Flying Ace. We also rough cut about 3/4 of the second hole. It has been exhausting work but extremely satisfying. We would like to thank everyone who has offered their help. The town risk manager is still drafting a blanket insurance policy for all who wish to donate their services. This is the reason we haven't taken any of you up on your generous offers..... yet. I met with the Parks and Recreation director yesterday and we hope to have a couple of mass work days in July (10th and 11th) or (17th and 18th). We are hoping to get a local restaurant to provide lunch for the volunteers. Back to the course, hole 1 is a slight dogleg left on level ground and measures about 260'. The 2nd is a short steep downhill that will require a bit of touch. There is a small wash about 30' before the cage that can be tempting to clear from the tee. Well thats all for now we hope to finish the rough cut for 2 and really get into 3 on Sunday... let you know how it goes in a couple of days.

Well, another workday in the bag and we are grinding forward at a satisfying pace. Hole 2 is completely rough cut and the first 180' of the approx. 350' 3rd hole was roughed in today. After playing 1 and 2 a few times we stood and looked at each other in disbelief. We are actually playing disc golf in Wallingford! Very cool. We are hoping to order the first 9 baskets sometime next week.

Happily exhausted,

Jason

I stopped by here the other day, but couldn't find any signs of work or new fariways; might have been in the wrong spot? I went to the trail kiosk towards the back of the park and walked down the two trails. The terrain looks pretty promising. Definitely a bigger park than I thought.

Any word on work days? Where are the roughed in holes, I'd love to take a peek.

If you position yourself behind the backstop of the ball field and look to your extrema left, you will see one section of post and rail fencing. To the left of the fence is the red trail head. Walk the red trail for about 100' and you will see the first tee on your left. Each of the first four holes have been connected with log lined trails (can't miss them)and the first and second holes are ready for baskets. The second basket will be placed on the right hand side of the clearing across the small wash. As for #3 and #4 just follow the knee high stumps. They should be gone in the next two weeks. The town is looking at the 14th of August for a mass work day and we are hoping some people will want to put in a few more hours on the following day. We started roughing in 5 and it looks like it will be 320' to 360' depending on how close to the tree line the town will allow us to go (it would be our wish to bury it out in the open but I think this will be quickly shot down). We will be there on one of the two weekend days so if you stop by give a yell.

Stopped by yesterday and found the course.... wow!

You guys are REALLY going all out and doing a great job. the fairways for the first two holes look better than most fairways on existing long-standing courses in CT haha. The amount of tree work done is impressive. hole 2 looks awesome with the sloped green and stream in front of the basket area.

can't wait to try it out! keep us updated for workdays and such.
