A little insight and info on the new CP (Cooks Pond) course to all that care, and I know there's a ton of you that do. Stephen has taken on the challenge of building a nice little course in Worcester, Tatnuck Sq. to be more specific. This land is a privately owned 52 acre piece that has been sheltered and protected from the public for almost 100 yrs. I am a 3rd generation member of the the property. I also am a member of the board of directors for Smith Pond Corp. which is the governing body of the property. the property has been a men's only club since inception until this year the board has warped into the new millenium and is trying to support a new coed club. Confused yet? Let me break it down!!!
100 yrs ago, a bunch of men started a men's club. Appprox. 75 members. The property consists of 40 acres of pristine scenic land and a 12 acre body of water that houses 7 islands and a nice little beach area(rope swings are around the corner, but sshhh, we're not supposed to have them up). Nice so far huh? Well it gets better... One of the bigger islands hosts our meeting house, a 50x70 building with a full kitchen, two baths and a huge hall with the coolest 12' stone fireplace. You want rustic?, you got it here! you'd never believe you were in Worcester. Anyway, about 50 yrs ago another group of men approached the already thriving "Tatnuck Club" (first clubs name) and asked to start another club and the "Island Club" was born. Did anyone figure out that religion was the reason for two clubs? Protestant and Catholic, go figure!! Well it took 100 yrs for the women to be heard and what do you know, most of us barbarians loved the idea of the new club. I don't believe there is a name for it yet as they are still in their trial period. I'm sure they'll work out the kinks soon.
So without taking up too much of your time, I thought you should know how intimate our little community is as well as extremely protective of the land. We are walking on eggshells right now, so as not to upset the natives.
We the Smith pond corp.. have established an agreement with the Greater Worc. Land Trust to use much of the land and gave them first right of refusal to develop the land. So that's another group that we don't want to rustle any feathers. We have already had a few neighbors show some concern, and it was your typical things like litter, parking and incorrect perception of what us disc golfers are like. They thought that a bunch of hoodlums and druggies would be invading their neighborhood. I tried to reassure them that we are quite the opposite, but i think as we progress and meet the neighbors and members(who frequently walk the property) we will prevail in showing them just how caring and normal we golfers really are as a whole. I believe that anyone opposing the new course will eventually welcome us as they see the local punks and potheads that hang out and terrorize the neighbors disappear. Another major concern was litter, easily avoided as we all know. The final major obstacle as we proceed is convincing the masses that a little cutting and grooming will only enhance the property. Oh yeah, one more thing, parking may be a little tricky. We have a big lot, but it is gated and Stephen can't open and close daily. So we must work something out before we open. Maybe if Stephen organizes a work party in the next few weeks, we can kill many of these birds with one good day. I will invite all members of the clubs to join in and will open the house for a nice lunch and fire and maybe even a few beers. We are always open to new members joining one of the clubs also. Oh yeah, they're not segregated any more
Thanks so much for listening, I have a ton more to say, but hate typing so lets talk at the work party!!!
Sincerely, George Economos "PAPA-ACE"
