Re: NHL 2010-11
The sample size is still small, but what the heck... It took a long time for me to back him back in 2008-2009. I thought he was all done last year and that Tukka was the man. Looks like it really was just an injury setting him back.

The Bs sure are looking good aren't they. Come on Ryan. We will accept you. The Sabres suck and have always sucked. The only non suckiness they ever had was when they had Hasek in net and even then they sucked everywhere but in goal.

What a fun game to watch last night. 2 goals in 15 seconds to tie it and they just left it on cruise control from there.

Ugh, what an epic collapse. Pens were clearly the dominant team through 40 minutes and then they just fell apart.
I blame this one mostly on coaching. Why does the coach have the defensemen playing up like forwards when they are nursing a 2 goal lead?
Dumb plays are the ones that cost you, and everything the Bruins got was only because the Pens gave them. The Penguins simply gave this one away.

I guess it all comes down to a matter of perspective, but what I saw in the 3rd period is the Penguin defenders making terrible decisions and committing laughably poor turnovers. It was simply the giveaways and sloppy play on their part, and not the Bruins doing anything exceptional. Any NHL team would have capitalized on those gifts.

Or maybe it's just that success breeds contempt and puts star players under ridiculous microscopes.

Re: NHL 2010-11
The Bs got Sturm and Brad Stuart for Thornton, right?
Two losers for a 100+ points per season who was in his mid-20s. Yes, I think that could qualify as one of the worst trades ever. The only positive was that it gave them the cap room to sign Chara and Savard (who I still think is going to be a bust and would cut him or trade him ASAP). I hope he makes me eat those words because I do actually like him.

Re: NHL 2010-11
I found the answer to my question.
The Thornton Trade – Five Years Later.
Posted by Lyle Richardson on December 1st, 2010
On the evening of November 30, 2005 the last early season blockbuster trade of the NHL’s current CBA took place, as the Boston Bruins shipped center Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Brad Stuart and forwards Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau.
It was a Wednesday evening, and I was preparing for my weekly segment on The Face Off Hockey Show when I received an e-mail from Jon Swenson of Sharkspage.com informing me Stuart, Sturm and Primeau had been pulled from the pre-game skate as the Sharks prepared to face the Dallas Stars. “Looks like something might be about to happen”, wrote Jon, who promised to keep me updated.
During my segment I was flipping back and forth between TSN and Sportsnet whilst keeping an eye on my e-mail. About halfway through the segment an e-mail came from Jon informing me of the trade just seconds prior to Sportsnet breaking the news.
I promptly informed the FOHS hosts and for the next fifteen minutes we analyzed the deal, trying to wrap our heads around the fact the Bruins traded away their franchise player less than four months after re-signing him to a multi-year extension, and the long term ramifications for both clubs.
Five years later, it’s apparent the deal was the biggest in Sharks history, propelling them into the NHL’s elite class.
In each season with Thornton in the lineup the Sharks had four straight 100-plus point seasons dating back to 2006-07. They finished second in the Pacific division twice, followed by three straight seasons where they topped the division.
Over the last two seasons the Sharks were also the top team in the Western Conference regular season standings, winning the President’s Trophy in 2009 as the top team in the league’s overall standings.
The move to San Jose did Thornton a world of good, as he won the Hart and Art Ross trophies in 2006 with a career-best 125 points, including 92 points in only 58 games with the Sharks.
He followed that with 114, 96, 86 and 89 point performances, and this season is on pace for 88 points. Except for a 101-point performance in 2002-03, those numbers with the Sharks were superior to those he posted in just over seven seasons with the Bruins.
Sadly the trade didn’t improve the club’s post-season record, as they were bounced from the Conference Semis for three straight seasons and the quarterfinals in 2009. They made it to the Conference Finals in 2010 but were swept by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Thornton’s critics during his Boston years frequently pointed out his failure to carry the Bruins deep in the playoffs. Despite his regular season success with the Sharks he continues to hear the same criticism.
Nevertheless, life in San Jose clearly agrees with Thornton. He opted to forego the riches of next summer’s unrestricted free agent market to sign a three-year, $21 million extension with the Sharks.
As for the Bruins, of the three players they received in exchange for Thornton only Marco Sturm remains, and while he’s been a good two-way contributor he’s also been plagued by knee injuries in recent years.
Stuart and Primeau lasted about a year in Boston and were packaged off to Calgary in February 2007 for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew.
Ference remains a Bruin while Kobasew after 2 ½ seasons in Boston was dealt to the Minnesota Wild for Craig Weller, the rights to Alexander Fallstrom and a second round pick in 2011. Weller never played a game for the Bruins and was shipped to Florida as part of the return for Dennis Seidenberg at the March 2010 trade deadline.
After the Thornton trade the Bruins would finish third twice in the Northeast Division (2008 and 2010) and top the Eastern Conference standings in 2009, but it’s safe to say those playoff placements had nothing to do with the return from the Thornton deal.
Despite the Sharks post-season struggles over the past five years it’s clear they and Thornton were the big winners of this deal.
