Pye Brook Park -- 2011

Post by J_Disc »

Please use this thread to discuss all matters related to Pye Brook Park in Topsfield, MA.

Stew has secured the funds to install rubber and/or paver tee pads this Spring and planning is currently in progress. We've already (temporarily) installed some rubber tee pads on #16 and #2 as a test to check out how well some inexpensive rubber stall mats from the local co-op would work.

We would like to get some help with the installs and need to do a better job coordinating efforts. I know many locals are not active on NEFA discussion board, so if you're a Pye regular, please introduce yourself (post here) and subscribe to this thread to get an email whenever there is an update.

Thanks!

Conditions Update (12/30/2010): We've cleared all the Pye tee pads after the big storm and the course is now playable. There are deep snow drifts as well as large areas completed cleared by the wind. Four of us played yesterday in just over 3 hours. The access road from the back gate has been plowed and it's easy to walk the wind-cleared berms, but retrieving discs from the deep snow drifts is challenging and definitely requires gaiters. The wind-packed snow generally kept the discs on top of the snow, so finding discs wasn't much of a problem.

i'm headed to pye tomorrow (1st of the year) probably around noon. if you want to throw the 'wahoo' show up and you can give it a rip. it seems very grippy (r-pro)... i also picked up a flow for christmas- so it'll likely be a round filled with experimental throws (aka bad throws).

either way it's a good way to start the year, even if it ends up being the last round for a long time.

I think it was Lady Pye's time of the month yesterday but I had a fun time playing anyways. 2 or 3 tees have been significantly improved.

Footprints and tees were being drifted over in a very short timeframe. I saw a shot from 17's tee flip up over the hill and land between 18's basket and the road.

The North Shore was hit hard by the storm -- a full 2 feet of the white stuff. With a little motivation from Wolf, three of us chipped in to clear Pye tees #4 through #18. We also walked most of the course with snow shoes to make paths. If anyone heads up there, try to bring a shovel to get tees 1 to 3. Thanks.

Amen JD. That was a huge effort. Just snowshoeing to the tee boxes was brutal, then shoveling all that snow.....

The boxes are very playable, but the fairways, etc are still under very deep and often quite drifted snow.

Good luck out there playas!

Tees were cleared yesterday from last storm, but some tees are now icy. If anyone heads up there, try to bring some ice melt to hit a couple tees.

Walking is tough -- knee deep snow with waist deep drifts, but at least the town plowed the back entrance / road.

Pulpit round on tap for Noon or so today. Anyone welcome to show.

just some thoughts about pye-
i've e-mailed with jd last fall about the 'friday social rounds'- (which sounded fun but my schedule won't let me get up to a course before 5:30 at the earliest :x )- but i was wondering if we could set up a weekly round up at pyebrook this upcoming 2011 season.

(some of this 'course stuff' could be more meant for stew, but i thought i'd throw it all together on the course page)

i'm not sure what planning needs to go into it- but i'd be happy to do any/all leg work to get something going. it'd be sweet to get:

-a laminated flyer for display in the bulletin board with a labeled/updated course map and/or weekly round day/time
-a basic framework for local points and/or bragging rights for weekly round
-2011 bag tags?- a little local pride/membership chance? with extra $ to go towards course?
-some dates set on the calendar for clean up days (i know a lot of hard work goes into it already- but i, like a handful of others, would help out if i knew what days it happened, plus some guys who play a lot aren't nefa forum junkies or nefa at all)
-maybe a few new signs with updated distance? jborelli makes amazing signs-

(a long list, but like i said i'll do the leg-work if it seems we're interested)

i know a lot of guys are playing on the NASA team- but a local course weekly round might shake some people out of the woodwork or get new players a chance to jump in as well.

what do you think?
i'm coming out of hibernation now for the 2011 season- after the burlington blizzard yesterday my mind is all disc golf now...

also, forgot to mention- for bag tags- i have a bucket of scrap brass i'm going to bring in soon- i'll donate all the cash to buying the tags (should be between 50 to 100 bucks depending on brass price) and then all the buy-in of the tags can go straight to course?

Pye is the closest course to me and deff needs work on the tees and tee signs. I am happy to see some people showing interest in the course.

I and at a handfull of friends would deff. be interested in a friday night league (bag tags :D )

We would be willing to help in any way to make this happen... as having our local course be our favorite course would be amazing!

Glad to see some interest in it! I did a little research and can get decent metal tags with a graphic and basic text/numbering for 4 bucks a piece. Depending on my schedule and the weight of my scrap brass bucket I don't see it being a problem covering the cost on these- I'm guessing we could set up some framework for this over the next month and actually get rolling by april/may.

Anyone else interested in a bag tag night for 2011 at Pye? Ill post some graphic ideas in a day or two. Even with very little buy in- it'll at the very least generate a few bucks for the course- but I'm hoping its more than that-

this is my suggestion for the tag- it'd be a cleaner shape since it has to be a vector image (but you can't post vectors on this photo hosting site)- and i'm suggesting the dog-tag shape aluminum tag, blue tag with silver (aluminum) graphic and number above? Image

fridays are pretty easy- i wouldn't object to that. and of course any tag holder can play any other tag holder at any time as long as they both agree...

Nice to see the motivation. I'm definitely down for Friday tag/social rounds. We usually play on Fridays anyway, so not much of a change for the local crew. Hopefully the guys that also play softball won't have Friday games this year. We'll have to see about that. The other question becomes start time since some folks tend to be free earlier than others. Once we get to Daylight Savings Time, we've often ended up playing 2 rounds to accommodate multiple schedules. It's be a challenge to find a single time that works for all, but we'll just have to settle on the time that gets the biggest crew.

Funny thing about the tags is we used to have Pye tags -- I've still got mine somewhere. They were home made from jar lids of all kinds with metal numbers attached symbolizing Pye's land fill roots. The problem with them was they were noisy -- so lesson learned -- you definitely want to make sure they don't clank around. The Pye/PBR logo is great.

And in case you didn't notice, Pye was awarded the NEFA/Mass 2X Points event this year. I'm looking forward to the snow melt so we can start working on more tee improvements.

It will be great to extend the fraternity of local golfers -- looking forward to Spring!

I got the cash for trash today. gotta love going somewhere with actual trash and leaving with over $100! A question I thought of though- (I'm waiting on a proof that I could post for people to look at)- should I get a small # of blanks? for people who'd buy a tag but never be around enough to play? or does that make no sense? I know maybe one or two people who have a different home course but might support the course with buying a tag- or should they just get the highest # instead of the lowest?

also I'm thinking 25 tags? the store does small orders too so we could order more later without worrying about it-

friendly reminder- just started a new thread for Bag Tags at pye brook. Please head there viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7820 (in the happenings hook ups section) for all the details.

I played a full 18 yesterday (saturday) and it took me about 2 hours. The snow was solid enough to not fall through, but there were no 'run-ups' really and not a whole lot had melted- it all just got harder. It'll be just like last year I'm assuming- when it does melt, the streams and ponds are going to be VERY full. That swamp down by the road past hole 3's tee is gonna be huge again.

I'm going to have the actual tags by Friday, and I'll post pictures as well. I'll accept paypal if it makes it easier smalcome@hotmail.com- or just cash in person. If you do paypal- it'll be $17 bucks total to be mailed out.

Also, I ordered a special orange/yellow-y colored tag for #1 to make the winner feel special.

Took the doggie and a shovel up to Pye for about 45 minutes before dark last night. All the tee boxes from 7-16 are now in pristine shape. Based on my observations, I'm guessing most of the others are good--I just didn't have time to walk there.

going to play pye at high noon tomorrow (Sunday). if you want the #1 tag, come on down. but you'd better bring your A game... or at least your C game, depending on the person.

still have 8 tags left 'unassigned'- if there's any obvious people missing from the bag-tag thread (first entry) let me know.

i considered a post in lost n' found, but what's the point? i'm beginning to feel like i'm littering as opposed to disc golfing- so much plastic left in the drink. but they seem to be growing legs and walking away- a blue champ leopard, a yellow mirus, a white star sidewinder- all lost so far, but all with my name and number. i'm hoping to hear from them again...

course is looking real nice though- seeing tons of people out there too- good things both.

thinking of hitting it again on sunday- any takers?

BIG WORK DAY PLANNED FOR SATURDAY APRIL 16TH!!!! (and Sunday the 17th if you can't make it)

Please set some time aside to help with the tee pad install project. We are planning on having materials delivered this week.

Saturday's goals will to be to build out tee boxes where needed (about 2/3 of the holes) and transport crushed rock and rubber pads to all the tee boxes.

Sunday, we will compact the rock, and attach the tee pads.

Achieving these goals will depend on having bodies there. Stayed tuned for details and "what can I bring lists."
