COEYMANS — If you love frigid temperatures, acres of snow and ice and get cabin fever when you can't take your Frisbee out to play, then DisCap Ice Bowl is for you.

Called one of the fastest growing sports in America, DisCap is a golf-like game with Frisbees tossed into metal baskets anchored in the ground rather than golf balls hit into holes.

Joralemon Park, the site of the Feb. 12 Ice Bowl, is owned by the Town of Coeymans. The town allowed construction of the 28 basket DisCap course several years ago and it is in use through all four seasons.

According to DisCap club administrator Jeff Wiechowski, "The town has also been generous enough to actually purchase 9 extra baskets for us."

The Feb. 12 Ice Bowl was a benefit for CHOICES, a division of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County, and 68 players divided into teams of two paid entry fees of varying amounts .

CHOICES is a community based program that provides services, resources and referrals to residents in southern Albany County.

Wiechowski is expected to present a check to Ravena CHOICES Administrator Tom Dolan next week.

Dolan said DisCap donated more than $500 to CHOICES last year.

The money helps provide food, clothing, heating assistance and other aid to families and individuals down on their luck.

Players showed up around 8:30 a.m. at the Joralemon Park Pavilion for orientation and started their games around 9:30 a.m. After a lunch break, the teams played a second game which didn't end until close to 5 p.m.

DisCap players use several courses in the Capital region area including Schenectady, Saratoga County Hunter Mountain, Pottersville and Niskayuna.

Disc Golf and regular golf share some terminology like pars, bogeys and birdies. Just as in regular golf with its different club sizes and weights, the Frisbees are designed for different types of throws and are of varying sizes and weights.
