Innova APE
Check out the APE (not for beginners).. Congrates to Jay Reading, as he has a new Aviar Putter, feels great for spin putts.
Innova latest driver is called Ape, it is an over stable driver, the X-Caliber equivalent to a Boss. The flight numbers are Speed 13, Glide 5, HSS 0 och LSS 4 according to Dave Dunipace at Innova, it is not a driver for beginners. Champion Ape will be released during the month of April, but it was approved by PDGA yesterday, some figures:
Outside diameter: 21.1 cm (max weight 175.1 grams)
Inside rim diameter: 16.2 cm
Height: 1.6 cm
Rim depth: 1.2 cm
Rim thickness: 2.4 cm
Flexibility rating: 12.13 kg
Rim configuration rating: 27.75 mm
There is also a slightly less stable Wraith variant on the way, it will come in weights down to 158gms in Champion, Pro, or Star plastic. To be continued

They really need to just stop pumping out new discs every other week. It's getting ridiculous.

This.
Spend some time on a good new driver that fills a whole in the flight chart, not just a crazy fast disc that we find out what happens after its thrown and we hope it works.
Aces or Eights!!!

Re: Innova APE
normally i'd agree, no more crazy high-speed drivers etc... but this disc does serve a purpose, a max speed overstable wind-fighting disc designed for pro players with huuuuge arms. last i checked, Innova has some dudes who can really take advantage of this type of disc. Kinda sucks that it will be available for every noob to throw 100' but they'll figure it out eventually.

Re: Innova APE
While I agree that many (maybe even the majority of) people don't use discs that best suit their abilities, name something that's as fun (remember, this is a clean thread
) as throwing a new, fast disc?
Understand that most of us who post on this MB are 'tournmant players' who may even practice once in a while, take the sport seriously, actually try to think our way to becoming better, and become somewhat efficient (at what we do while playing dg). And then there are the majority of players who just want to go out there, throw 1 or 2 wicked good shots (per them) a round, have fun with their friends, aren't even really worried about "getting better", and that's about it. And they could do this "with the latest, greatest, new disc"!
It's not science - it's marketing. And the disc mfr's know this.
Remember a new, fast disc is a conversation piece. And YOU can conquer the world with it (well, at least maybe conquer your friends...). Do you think you can do that with a dog-chewed, ratty, worn, dirty-white Pegasus? Come on!
Besides what's wrong with throwing a new, fast, disc even if you don't know what it'll do? I once bought an Epic (sight unseen) and threw it; I've done "OK" with it
.

On the PDGA site DaveD said that it's not as overstable as he thought it was going to be. It's like a long Teebird Kinda.

Re: Innova APE
i heard from my Innova insider/spy/rep that after these next two discs come out this spring, Innova is actually going to stop production on anything new and halt development of any further new molds.
Here's a quote: "We've decided that making money and selling product should come second to people learning to throw a Leopard and a TeeBird at least 300ft... We're tired of noobs looking foolish and losing discs when they should be out practicing alone in a vacant lot or field before trying different molds."
Finally, a disc golf company with a back-bone!
I only use two discs anyway- a first run buzzz, and a stack of paper plates i stapled together (that's my putter). anything else isn't worth it.

Re: Innova APE
I threw the Ape on a windy day at Warwick. Seems like an XCAL/BOSS mix to me. Def not a tee-bird type disc.
Held up great in the wind, great open field distance driver.
I do believe Innova is now re-focusing on growing the sport through new players. More beginner friendly discs like the Dart, Mako, and Vulcan help. Changing USDGC formats is proof that this is really happening. Distaste for some of the top players attitudes and a general feeling that focusing on the top players has limited marketabilty of discgolf are other reasons.
back to discs, I was surprised to read that Paul Mcbeth only carry;s 3 drivers. Firebird, Tee Bird, and Destroyer. He said the Destroyer changed his game. I have too many discs in my bag.

Destroyer is still my go-to driver everytime. Gonna have to agree with Mcbeth bigtime.

You really don't need more than that.....if you have a good forehand and discs that are beat up enough to turn when you need them to.

Re: Innova APE
He must throw a firebird 400 + feet. Or, have very overstable destroyers. Because how do you step up to a 400 foot hole 20 mph head wind and trust the destroyer? That's where I go X Cal or Max, and my bag grows.

Re: Innova APE
Maybe just a little thread drift
...
While I'm sure there is some positive correlation between the distance thrown and the spin put on said disc, it would be very interesting to do a study to actually determine HOW much of this positive correlation there is for any one player.
Example 1: Player A, on average, throws 60mph and imparts x rpms on a disc. Player B, on average, throws 70mph and imparts 1.166x rpms.
Example 2: Player A, on average, throws 60mph and imparts x rpms on a disc. Player B, on average, throws 70mph and imparts >1.166x rpms.
Or, as the linear speed increases the rotational speed increases even more. Maybe??
Some players may just 'naturally' impart more spin (per speed) than others - and this could account for being able to throw ANY disc in a "more stable" orientation.
Just a thought.

Re: Innova APE
Depends, does either player have a ribbon tied to their disc in this example?

Post #12144 about 3/4 way down.
Different discs fly different for people. I can not get a Champ or Star Boss to go further than my Destroyer. Yet other people I play with throw them easy and get good flight. Same as when I throw a leopard it hyzer flips a new player throws it straight. So maybe the Ape flys like a Long Teebird for Dave and Not so much for others. All these new disc must get real confusing for a new player to decide what they should be throwing.

Re: Innova APE
Knowing that it probably depends on WHO is doing the throwing, but has any of the MSt boys determined if the Ch Ape is more or less over stable than a Ch Boss?
And inquiring minds would like to know a "comparison" among the Ch PD-2, Chaos, Z Force, Ch Ape, and Ch Boss (where each stacks up vs. each other regarding over stability and distance).

I like the new APE, I like it soo much that I ghost mine so people don't know I trow them.
What I notice 175g Ape is less stable than 175g Boss. I got my Ape dialed down.
All I can say is anyone who can trow 175g Boss 400ft will enjoy the new APE.
Yes it's true you have to be a men to crush it the right way.

Re: Innova APE
Unfortunately, Don had to replace a Star Boss when we were at Tradewinds Park in Florida last weekend. Apes were for sale, so he bought one because he really needed something to fight the wind. We beat it into the concrete a little before leaving for the day. Then he stepped onto the course the next day and sunk an Ace!! That's right, he aced a 450' water hole with the Ape! Congrats, Don. Is this the first Ape Ace?!

Greg I would never recommend you to try the Ape. To me Ape is no different from nuke and katana they all turn over so fast and eat the ground. All I am doing is adjusting to the disc. If anything I say try the big man's disc Champion Xcaliber 175g, Firebird, Banchee and Drone.
The REAL secret is it only take me 6 trow to figure out what it do before they make it in my bag. Who make PD-2? If it's not INNOVA I am not touching it.
