Basket height specifications

Post by Dave McHale »

Trivia time! Is the basket below (picture taken at the Memorial) legal? Yes or no?

Image

While I'm usually the first to help debunk traditional "rule myths", I can't find anything on the pdga website (shocking.....) to deny or confirm what the regulations are on the height of the cage. I *thought*, once upon a time, that there was a minumum/maximum range on how high above the ground the cage had to be set - that was what still allowed holes like the elevated hole at dragan (mounted on a concrete pillar which raised the "playing surface" immediately below the basket) or old Pyramids Gold #5 legal (hung from the tree, but still within the "legal" range above the playing surface below it).

The basket in this picture simply has a large base which helps to keep it steady, while raising it much higher into the air than most baskets. My gut says that is/was not allowed, but... if it's at the Memorial it must be kosher, yeah? Or is this another case of disc golfers being disc golfers and just doing whatever they feel like? ;)

When the basket specs were updated two years ago, the spec was written to specify the height range only "as produced" (82cm +/- 6cm) leaving the spec for "as installed" to the PDGA Course Design group. We have discussed it and haven't yet published a formal guideline. But we're looking at "allowing" 3-4 targets on an 18-hole course to be installed at heights outside the 82+/-6 produced range on either side.

Why bother with ruling that some baskets must be so high and others don't have to be? As long as the "as produced" dimensions are legal, let the baskets be set any way the course designer wants. Nothing is gained by having a standard height.

sorry ven, but i can't subscribe to that logic. there must be rules defining equipment and installation specs. otherwise i'd like all basketball hoops to be lowered to 8 1/2' so i can finally throw 'em down.

Check out the 2nd post on this page (technically post #92) and look at the 3rd picture. This is a permanent location at Hornet's Nest in Charlotte.

At least Val can get her disc out of that temp basket without having to CLIMB it!

I've always been a big fan of course design and theory of design, but baskets set like that I will never understand.
If you worked on a ball golf course and you cut cups and made goofy pin placements like an elevated basket on a DG course, you would have another job after just one fcuk up. You would not be fired from your job, there would just be another worker taking your position. Pin placement is a VERY important task, that gets completely f'd up on disc golf courses FAR TOO OFTEN. Again, in my own very humble opinion.

It seems the bottom of the cage should be a uniform height from the ground so it is the same on every basket at the course where installed.
For the record, Maple Hill's baskets are not all the same height. For example, number 7 gold is raised about 10" above most of the other baskets. I really think this sucks. Why have one basket that does not jive with the rest of the course? And 12 blue? I'm not a fan either.... I always get the same answer when I bring up the fact that they look stoopid
Oh well
