But anyways, down here in Mashpee, I run the Conservation Department.
As some of you also know, Conservation Commissions have tons of money and lands at their utilization.
Here's the jist... Mashpee has an area of wooded land near a bog complex that has a serious ATV and illegal dumping problem. Now, for the last year and a half or so, I have been trying to solve this problem. Whether it be citations, trespassing signs, police involvement, camera's etc. NOTHING has worked, so being the avid disc golfer I am, I made another hire in December of Drew McManus; you may know him as "Andrew" on these boards, and made this hire based upon connections with DCR and knowledge about the state park/disc golf connection (as well as wetlands credentials of course
Here's where disc comes to the table. At this juncture, I believe the only way to solve these problems is by introducing, a NEW, RESPONSIBLE use out in this area, ~ 50.8 Acres. DISC GOLF
It has come to the point where I have started to leak the idea to my commisioners, as well as some town people... ( I know all the selectmen, and have a very good reputation with them). The kicker is money... but I have that solved as long as I can convince EOEA (Executive Office of Environmental Affairs) to agree with my use of moneys that are set aside for MGL Chapter 40 8(c), which is the Mass. General Law dictating what you can do with the monies in that account. We have roughly $ 300,000 in that account to "maintain, acquire and otherwise protect " conservation lands.
Here's my shout out to the Disc Golf community: If we need the support, will people be availiable to sell this wonderful product to the town? And besides the crew I have here, any chance people in the general area would like to help in the construction phase? When and If this project gets some steam behind it? I have the money for the baskets, tee pads, and such. I think the biggest sell will be that the labor will almost be free, (Ill prob. find a way to pay for gas for chainsaws and such).
Anyways, just stating that it looks like Mashpee, (which by the way is one of the first exits on the cape) may have the ability to put in a premier course with the tools at our disposal.
Thanks guys, have a nice day!
