NEFA Techies - PS3

Post by Steve Solbo »

Got a question for techies out there, as I am a super lame-ass when it comes to stuff like this. So, the other day I was playing COD on my PS3... out of nowhere it freezes, goes black screen, etc. Then I learn how to restart the system, do that, et al. Then it wouldn't read discs, games anyways, it would still read DVD's and Blue Ray. Also, I started getting this error code "80010514" which is supposedly the "code of death" for PS3, it means data has become corrupted within the hardware itself. So, I was under the impression that I needed a new PS3, etc.

Anyways, yesterday just to see what would happen if I tried to start it up, it worked, however it was much slower loading things and I feared that at any minute it would freeze again. Should I cut bait with this system and buy a new one? I currently have the 40GB "FAT" PS3, with 2 USB ports on the front... anyone know how to get data, i.e. downloaded games and stuff off of it, can I simply buy a small flash drive, put them on there and move that data to the new PS3?

Thanks for any input. Also, I don't know if anyone does re-furbs and would potentially want to buy this system, it's a 40GB, and they actually sell for more than the 80GB in the stores, b/c they are more rare.

I don't know how to get data thing off the drive.

My friend had this happen. He fixed it by doing this:

A) With system in standby (red light on), hold the power button down. It should turn on then off again. Release the power button.

B) Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when it turns on, then it will beep twice. When you hear the two beeps immediately release the power button. If it turns off before the two beeps, repeat this step.

C) Follow prompts until you see a list of options. Option 3 should be RESTORE FILE SYSTEM. Select that one. It should restart and prompt that it's going to restore the file system. Click to continue, and see if that works.

If it doesn't work, call Sony for a replacement. Or get an XBox.

Hey Steve can't you just buy a new hard drive and not a entire PS3? I've been thinking about doing this myself as my hard drive is getting pretty full. I see 320 gb on amazon for like $70. Post if you take this route and let us know how it goes.

Drew, I tried that route, it seems to have worked, but it also seems to still be slow, I am holding my breath on this one...

Sony want's $150 plus shipping for replacement, plus a potential 2-4 week wait. Might as well just buy a new one... it would delay my new disc golf bag purchase however.

I had the yellow light of death on my PS3 when i inquired about getting it fixed though sony they said the same thing $150 and 2-4 weeks and you don't get your ps3 back you may get a refurbished one so kiss all your saved games goodbye. I wound up going though a local game shop to get mine repaired same 4 week wait but I got my ps3 back with all my data still intact and it was only $80.

I think I am just gonna get a 40-60 GB flash USB drive thing, and save all my data on there as backup.
