Stop eating Hyland's apples!
Chances are your parents taught you that you don't go to the grocery store and eat your share of grapes or apples or anything else without paying for them first...especially when they're priced by weight. Hyland's apples and peaches are no different. Stop grazing when you're playing in the Orchard. You're stealing from the guy who let the course go in. Not to mention, you could become extremely sick if you eat the freshly sprayed apples. Apple picking is for the paying customers. Absolutely NO ONE is entitled to free apples or peaches. The orchard makes a living off their fruit. I'm not making this up--its straight from the famer's mouth! Please end the madness!!!

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
Wendy,
Could there be some sort of system where a player pays a couple of bucks, get a stamp on the hand or something inside, and then be able to munch on some fruit?
I would think not most likely but I figured I suggest it since those peaches smell intoxicating from holes away.

You want someone to set up a system to check who is and who is not stealing someones property? I can tell you with out wasting Wendy's time that it is not going to fly.
How about you bring your own peaches or apples or whatever you want to munch on during your round. Shame on club members for stealing from Hyland.

It's not like they grow on trees, oh, wait...
The above message does not condone taking fruit from Hylands or anywhere else!

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
First time I played at Hyland last year was in the late fall...and the trees were just LOADED with apples that were left to rot. Seemed like a big waste to me. What about setting up an "honor" jar or something where you'd pay for apples if you eat one during your round? It'd be better for the farmer to get a few bucks out of the disc golfers than let them rot on the trees again.

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
Troy,
I'm not saying that that which you're saying couldn't be done, but I think it all just revolves around "respect" for other people's property...which apples are.
When you say...
...don't think they all sit there until the worms get them!
"Firsts" (apples that are unblemished) command a certain price...say 5.5 to 6 cents a pound. "Seconds" (those with blemishes) command a couple of cents less. "Thirds" used to be virtually worthless but since people really started to drinking cider a LOT (in the last 25 years), these thirds have come up to the price of seconds...so the farmer literally knocks off the no good ones, grinds them all up, filters them, and makes cider. A LOT more profitable than it used to be. In the end, even rotten apples CAN (and are) used to help the farmer make a buck.
Soooooooo, bottom line - don't eat'em.
Karl
Ps: I grew up on an 87 acre apple orchard so I know a little about apples / the business (albeit my knowledge is 30+ years potentially outdated, and thus my dollars and cents may be off quite a bit).

Nice post Karl. Why is it that the next generation thinks all their wants and needs should be catered to?

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
LOL...I wasn't condoning the stealing of apples and I don't know anything about the apple business. I was just pointing out that I was surprised at the amount them that went to waste last year, and that if the farmer is selling the apples anyway there should be some way to make it work.
I agree, it's a total disrespect to the property owner to take apples without consent.

On that same tolken, why is it that suggestions like the aforementioned get crapped on instead of constructively criticized...jeez Matt, take a chill pill!..that's all they are...suggestions and when one informs them of the details like Karl did, you reach understanding.

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
I was up there today and the apples do look delicious. Does anyone remember that scene in The Lion King where the hyena, referring to the wildebeests, says "can't I just pick off one of the little sick ones?"? That is what the tempting apples were like, wildebeests. True story, and no I did not eat any.
The course looks great!

Re: Stop eating Hyland's apples!
How about throwing 25 or 50 cents or a dollar down when playing, and putting it into the farmer's hands? This would begin to create a trusting situation between disc golfers and the apple farmer, thus stabilizing the disc course for years to come for the players. Not for an allowance to eat them, but a 'thanks for the great course' donation, and silently telling them you CAN trust the majority of us.
just a thought.

Great thought but I think just paying for what you want at first and everyone is happy players get apples they get money maybe a discount considering we pay to play but just saying '
