Declared lost disc later found

Here's what happened:
Player threw his approach. We could not find it. It was declared lost after 3 minutes. Player took a one-throw penalty, re-threw from last location, and completed hole.
Walking to the next tee, we found his disc near the next tee. Player wondered if he could play from that lie and use that score instead. I said no. A lost disc is a lost disc after 3 minutes.
I looked at the rule book (803.11) and it seems like once the disc is declared lost, that's that. The only leeway you have is if it is discovered later that someone actually picked up your "lost" disc and removed it from the field of play. Then 2 strokes would be removed from your score.
Am I interpreting this correctly?
