High Winds

Post by John Dickison »

Is there a point a team challenge should be cancelled due to high winds? Yesterday's match at Amesbury Pines was dangerous due to 40 to 50+ mph gusts - thankfully nobody hurt or worse. Yes, captains can agree, but it would be helpful if there was a generally agreed guideline in place. Most of the courses throughout New England are heavily wooded.

No need for the league to get involved with this decision. Leave it to the captains to make the "right" call.

Whit and I never discussed NOT playing. Personally, I thought we'd be OK given all the branches that came down in last year's storms, but the gusts were worse than I expected. Thankfully nobody was hurt. In hindsight, I believe many agree we should not have played.

Personally, I don't think players can or should depend on captains to make the right call, nor do I want to have made the decision to play when somebody gets injured (or worse). Nobody should be hanging out under the trees all day long in 50+mph gusts. Sorry, just too dangerous. IMO.

I'm not saying there needs to be a rule, but I would encourage any captain to call it off (before people travel) if such high winds are forecast. It's just not worth the risk.

Should have played Pye Brook instead. Much less wooded.
