Framingham Course

Post by Nate Spear »

I just came from a meeting with a Rep of the Park and Rec Department, The PE Director, and the Principal of the Framingham North High School where I made the initial proposal for a new course! Unbelievably, all three have heard of dg, and were very intrigued by the idea, want to hear more, and see a design which I already have in my head and have been working on.
The little used park behind the school is just begging for an 18 hole course and I wanted to put it out here for my fellow NEFA peeps to discuss. I’m trying to fill the void between Worcester area and Boston with a sweet course here in Metro West, currently the black hole of courses in Mass. Any ideas and interest we can generate would be a huge bonus! :D

Where in Framingham???

I was just discussing with someone yesterday, how there is such a need for a course in the metrowest area. There's nothing between Borderland and Pyramids/Maple Hill.

The sight is in Saxonville, a village of North Framingham, you can almost hear the Mass Pike from the school that it's behind. I live walking distance from there and it's 18 miles from Devens, 22 Miles from Borderland, and 25 Miles to Pyramids!

Anyone interested in having a quick tour, I'd be happy to show you around the site. I'd appreciate some other perspectives on some potential holes, the area lends itself to some really interesting looks, a good amount of water and elevation changes. Shoot me a PM.

I am 100% in on helping create a framingham course and have framingham residents also on board.

I live in marlborough and can get over to that area easily to help scope it out or do work or anything.

Metrowest so desperately needs a course. Thank you for even making this a possibility!

I live in Marlborough and I work in Framingham. This is the best news I've heard in weeks. I'm in on any help you need with getting this off the ground.

What park would the course be going into?

The course would be partly in Winch Park (Park and Rec owned), and partly in a conservation area (owned by the town in some fashion) behind Winch Park that's a kind of no man's land. The property abuts the Sudbury River, a small pond is damned underneath a paved bridge that's only open to foot traffic on one side, and a small casual water stream leads to the River toward the other. The course would play on both sides of the lake, and on the school side of the stream behind the tennis courts.

That sounds awesome. I know that area. That has the potential to be a legitimately awesome course. Plus its only 10 minutes from where I work and 20 minutes from where I live. This day has taken a significant turn for the better!

Framingham Course

Thanks Doug, the next step is making sure the conservation commission doesn't have a problem around these water ways and wetlands areas before I go crazy showing them a definitive plan. I'll be sure to be in touch when it's time to dig out a tee box or plant a basket, still lots of ground work to do...

have you done an airil map out of the course on like google maps or something like that? stencil out your proposed area before you stomping through swamps.

just thinking over the area in my head we should EASILY be able to fit 18 holes and have that cover a fair bit of different terrain, using the water and elevation changes.

I have both stomped around the area pretty extensively and I have done a quick draw up of a google map that I drew some lines on to depict where 18 holes would work pretty well, I'd love some more expert opinions however... Having trouble figuring out how to load that pic onto this forum Mike, so I'll just email it to you, I'd like to hear your ideas.
I'm taking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) [computer based cartography,] class at Framingham State and by the end of the semester, mid May, I have a final project due, I've chosen to map out this course! I'm gonna get college credit for designing a disc golf course, pretty sweet.

Seems to be open to the public. You just need to play when the students aren't out and about. The fairways cross too many walkways and around buildings.

The icons on the map are also clickable.

The only information published about it is through Recreation/Outdoor Activities. They have a course map and rent discs and baskets. Policy states a guest of a member can participate in recreational activities, but it does not say who can or can't walk on the campus grounds and throw discs.

the software is way sicker then google earth IMO at least for mapping tools and depictions

a lil slower then GE but hey for better tools its a fair trade IMO

when I signed in/reg'ed account it auto had your map saved into my world...lol

that is cool..I wonder if ya can save other peeps maps they share ect ect..that would be cool..great design tool for DG'er and basically overall great stuff

added with the ability to just link so they can change views ect and not just send a person a still photo..and ya can still do that

maybe we need a maps thread...lol

edit what does "snapping mean" IDK..says hit CTRL to enable snapping..just not sure what that is

So I was able to meet up with Nate yesterday to check out the property.

We spent 1-2 hours walking the property while he showed me some of his ideas for holes. We found a couple new ones, and created another 18 hole layout that consisted of some of his original ideas, as well as some new ones I proposed.

I need a map editing tool to draw the layout I had proposed.

It is somewhat tight in spots, but there is a good section in the back that would be great for majority of the holes to play though. It has somewhat of an Amesbury feel to it in the sense that the fairways sort of intersect, but you're never walking through, or playing through, another fairway to get to the basket. Worked in a few tricky/tecnical shots. 2 shots over water, but still cater to a "newbie" player.

Certainly lots of potential! People need to check out the land to see what we're working with and to get the ideas flowing.

Maybe even head out there with a disc or two and play some of the potential holes.

Here's a link to the map I quickly drew up last night, it's very rough, but gives an idea of some of the holes that could be built.

If you have GPS on your cell phone, you can also get one of the free GPS apps to walk the course and add check points. Then output to a gpx file that you can upload to the arcgis map. I've started experimenting with this. Seems to work pretty well for mapping out the trails and the holes.

I use an app called my trax. It uploads to google maps and can be shared easily.
I just went for a lunch time hike in a section of blue hills that doesn't get much traffic.

http://g.co/maps/b95hr

There are a lot of great features in that area which would make for a nice wooded course.
