Where would a course be going in?

Where in Gardner were you thinking about proposing a course, Titan?

There is a bit of disc golf history in town. There was a course set up around Bent's Pond in South Gardner many years ago (way before my time in the game, though...Phil Kennedy can tell the story). And I seem to recall there being a temp course set up at MWCC once upon a time (again, before my time, I think). Speaking of MWCC, that strikes me as the ideal spot in town, though that would require going to them instead of the city, I think.

I'm a little far to be of too much help too often, but I'd definitely be down with doing what I can to help bring disc golf to the old hometown. If for no other reason than to have another place to play when I visit the folks (like they don't have enough a complex that I only visit to play golf ;)).

they are excited to find a piece of land within their existing parks for DG..The Community Development & Planning Board of Garnder is the contact. He has something in mind at a property that is currently un/under used..once he gets his team members on board we will be walking through the property to see if DG can be a reality if not we will work to find another piece of land somewhere else!

The funny thing is I never caught the name of the "land" he was speaking of...odd I know but at this point it is semi moot...as the major issues here is DG will be coming the a DG dead zone in Gardner thus closing the link eve more!
I will have that info by next week I envision a walk through sooner then later

I have a plan and the future involves MWCC,The actual MT W, and several other key areas in that acute region. as the sport evolves in that area I could see the locals pushing for a better bigger course..just gotta start with an introduction to DG course then watch the cycle unfold...

I will need localish peeps to Gardner on board..(I have some relatives who will help as well..normal relatives..lol) as I was not expecting a "Gardner project" so soon among my other projects..but hey can we really say no to DG somewhere new?

The RT2 DGClub theory is working..stay tuned for some other major news from the area..as we will be exploding DG into this region this year and well forever!

also I am interested in this I hope Phil see this

Definitely curious to find out what or where the land is that they're considering. I'm sure I'm not aware of all the land the city owns, but of the existing parks I'm aware of, I can't think of one that would be large enough to handle even a nine hole course. Most of the city parks are multi-use (playgrounds, ballfields, etc) without a ton of contiguous unused space, so if they did squeeze nine holes in, they'd be short and probably wouldn't flow all that well. If they're going to scrap a ballfield or playground in favor of other activities like disc golf, though, and there are definitely some ripe possibilities.

Keep us posted, Titan.

this is the plan..as they have a facility that the ball fields are no longer being used and are in disrepair beyond what they wanna fix...so that would open up the "meat of the course" incorporated with the surrounding woods area we should be able to make something "legitish" happen...I hope

I just didnt catch the name..and I know Gardner fairly well having trouble placing where this would be..I have some leads from solid locals..guess stupid me will just have to wait till next waive of discussions...to find out where..lol

I told him rough estimates for nowadays intro course would need 2250-3000 feet per nine and he seemed to think it would work(that must be taken lightly as he is not a DG'er)...might be able to get away with a lil less...some extra design work will obv need to be done to make the course interesting enough to play with a lower footage though..more footage..hey just a bonus

the main goal in my mind since it seems the land will be allotted somewhere..is to find dedicated people in that area who will assist in fundraising, labor, continued maintenance and some other general DG aspects. I have already gathered some troops and I thank all that have given a pledge to make this happen

I will do my best to keep things rolling on all fronts and lay out a solid design using the resources I have via many platforms and help lead the way to DG in Gardner

I'm down to help...got a good fund raiser in mind...was gonna use it to raise dough for the winch legion course...the land there just isn't doing it for me though...

On a side note, I'm still interested in having somebody with course design experience walk the winch land...its a ton of land, maybe I'm just not seeing it.

next waive of discussions have begun...

the mayor is on board and we just gotta find land

a funny response listed below..lol

Any thoughts about where we could locate a DG course? Could establishing a DG course be part of one of the forest management cuts? Dunn Park and Camp Collier also come to my mind.

Is this an opportunity to address the persistent whining about not giving the kids something to do?

lol huh

I am telling you DG is just ripe to get the green light!

pitch it right an kaboooom peeps I am telling you it solves many issues for the Towns..! added with us doing the fundraising,work...its a no brainer for them..

Dunn Park would be sick. I could walk there in about 5 min. Right down the street from my house. If this gets going I am not sure how much help I can help with, but will try my best. Coggs is going to be taking a lot of my focus atm. Once done there I can focus on something really local.

Dunn Park is as close to the high school as Amesbury is to their high school. I wonder how much of the vandalism at Amesbury is due to that close proximity.

Tee 1 at Amesbury is about 500 feet from the front door of the high school, and right in town. Gardner High's front door is at least a half-mile from Dunn's parking lot, and well away from town. That's not to say that Dunn Park isn't a possible after-school hangout for students, but it's not like its close enough for students to be passing through on a daily basis on their way somewhere else. And at least Dunn being a state park means some sort of staff is on site for much of the year, which would help monitor for vandals.

Funny you mention the high school though, because there is a good deal of unused woodland out behind the high school and the middle school, including land on or neighboring Stedman playground/park. If I were to guess where the city would have enough land for a course, that area would be one of the first on my list. And if it is technically considered school property, they might be able to work with a program like EDGE to get discounts on baskets and other supplies.

is 700 acres enough for a DG course....lol

myself and Dave R met with city officials and targeted a potential area for a course...

logistics on the front burner are parking...if it will be allowed in water protected area or if we need to create a parking area via another spot

we walked the land briefly and wow the woods were fairly "clean" and many many carts roads for access when working...the course will be woodsy for sure..we have some spots with elevation, and a few water feature spots possibly, the cart roads will serve as the "openish" holes if needed

we will be working with the forester soon as well

basically DG just got a big KABOOOM in Gardner

in due time we shall all enjoy a great new gem in Gardner

troops start to rally cuz we may break ground before ya know it

TY to all involved and TY to Gardner for being open on a DG course

The area of land is on RT140 and nearby the college, golf course

the land is on 140 across from bike trail, down the road from horse track and kinda stems over to the golf course area and to winchentucky border then down to Home Trust(land given by contractor who put subdivision in to south of this properties direction

The main obstacle is figuring out parking then we can proceed with design while working with Forester

The land is water protection..REC activities are allowed but the parkingl area we would love to use is on the protection side of the line..and is the issue..although it is designated already for parking it is used for peeps to do bad things for most part and is close to 140 so i don't see the issue but it was stated find plan B cuz ya never know what peeps will say/complain about

What we thought was a stream is now beaver dammed and kinda pond like..so it splits the land in 2 chunks..one on water protected one not...82acres NOT 600plus on another...there is a cart road on the non protected no parking lot side tht a lot can be created and was suggested by town official that sometimes more work is less work kinda thing..if we create one it may be less work then going to meetings for permission on protected side for parking

there is little room for crossing unless ya go semi roadside 140..kinda buffer but would rather avoid that in all reality

so if forest plans on making some logging deck, machine area on non protected side then we may be able to then have it become parking with fill ect ect of course but I am sure he will have already done that to some extent

we have some plan B's to speak with Home trust as official gave me his contact to come in from south side rather 140..and collier camp a boy/girl scouts things and work with them

I suspect we make the bigger, non multiuse land work no matter the small obstacles

so that is where we stand....parking,forester,design,fundraising,work,play easy enough..lol

the land in white is Home Trust land and I have the contact to open discussions on starting there as parking is not an issues there

the two bold red lines are the 2 proposed areas for parking as of now the one east is in protection land..the one further west is the proposed construction of lot off of cart road
