Thinking out loud here

Post by Angelo Mascia »

Craig had brought up a great point, currently
FDR
Kisco
Cranbury
Waveny
Fairfield U
Veteran's

aren't really covered by any club to my knowledge. I was looking around at Skyland's and Discap and they have an awesome thing going on with their clubs which I feel would be awesome to replicate with these courses. They're all relatively close. Even Beacon has it's own club after a few short months of existence. Who else is with me! Let's do it!

If any of the single course clubs have established the 501c3 status, you may wanna approach them to "piggyback" onto what they have going.

DisCap is actually just that. The Schenectady Disc Golf Club was initially created to get big $$ sponsors involved in the installation of the Central Park course. We threw out the idea of a "merger" between SDGC and a bunch of guys informally known as the Adirondack Reigion Disc Golf Club(Hyzer Creek, J-Park and Willow) and they agreed.

Thanks! If there's actually any interest, I'll be sure to look into that option!

DisCap welcomes you with open arms. Still thinking of relocating? About multicourse clubs it takes a lot of thankless dedication to keep moving forward. Hope it comes together for these courses.

I am still thinking about it. The transfer process is rather slow, but I really loved it up there. It's also much much much more affordable than down here in richchester :)

Six courses but only about 20 people actually play them regularly.
Not enough bodies to form a 'club'.

I was thinking that too. But , I feel if we start something small there are a lot of people that could become regulars. There's atleast 7 new guys I met at FDR alone interested in participating a little more. I heard FDR had about 30 show a few fridays back. There's people in general, but I think we got something a little more concrete we could grow it into something awesome.

We started with less than that at J-Park.
It's not gonna happen overnight.
Start with the core group and make sure they all help "sell" it to the new players they meet on the courses.
Eventually the people will get word of the good times you're having and wanna be a part of it.

Ya, after diving at Buffumville this weekend I went over to the hole 1 area. There was a group of 4 near the short basket, a group of 6 waiting to tee off, a group of 2 waiting in the queue, and a group of (get this) 12 on little 12 coming in. NONE of these people did I know! That means the sport is getting an infusion of a LOT of new people! The word IS spreading.

For you other guys that posted about your clubs, do you mind giving me some tips for growing and becoming successful. How did you start? Did you have a core group of people?
If you were there from the beginning, some insight on hardships and potential problems would be good to know. Thanks for all the input!

it will be awkard at first as you will be the sole member..just keeping showing your face at the courses..pitching the idea and have meeting places that ya keep showing up at and watch the numbers slowly rise..course kiosk info if possible..FB

and then just hard work..eventually you will be surrounded by great people who all love DG

good luck!!!

and regional club is the way to go IMO in almost all regions where DG is at

After a lot of time and consideration I've chosen to start a FDR / Kisco club as a seed with hopes of enveloping future courses. I have been out at FDR nearly every day and there has been a lot of interest in a local club. I have about 20-30 people initially, and I will spend the next few weeks collecting names and phone numbers.
Next step is to create a website, and if there are any NEFA members proficient in web-development I would love to be put into contact with them.

Keep the website simple at: http://www.discgolfscene.com
You can link FDR and Kisco as primary courses and set up leagues & tag rounds also.

Here is the hard part...... You gotta think up a name :P

I think an FDR/Kisco club is a good idea. There are a lot of toes you could step on putting it together though. Make sure you run your plans past people who are invested in those courses.... There are already twenty-plus 2012 FDR/Leonard Park tag holders (with more tags on the way).

I spoke with mike about kisco and I still need to get on touch with bill and others to have the proper conversations. Im doing nothing but gathering contact info at the moment until I get a green light. I just don't for see such large interest in a club being shot down. I also have no intention of messing with bag tags this season since they are kind of out there. I would like them to be more accessible and advertised with proper leader boards next season

Jeff, I'm not creative enough to think of a name. All I have right now is Lower Hudson DGC :(
Does Discap have a charter and whatnot / collect dues?

DisCap used to be Capital Region DG Assn. Was an ok name at the time, covered the regional description well.

We have a membership dues, kinda tied to the bag tags.
$40 for a full membership, which includes a tag, some piece of schwag(shirt/hat/disc) and a vote in the annual election of officers.
$25 if you just want the tag.

Thanks for all the input! It's been really helpful. I am going to drop this from the radar a little bit until I speak with all the people deeply involved with the respective courses.

Support from the proper channels is looking good so far. I've been trying to think of names, however, I am creatively challenged. Input much appreciated!!
So far I have:
Westchester Hyzer DGC
Lower Hudson DGC
Anhyzer NY DGC
Parked DGC
