American Legion - Winchendon - Green Light for New Course

Post by Jay Ballard »

So, here's the deal...

A while back myself and Dan Goderre approached the legion about putting a course in. We showed a video, did some research, and put on a nice little presentation. The response from the housing board/legion members was extremely positive. They gave us the green light and everybody agreed it's a "no brainer".

Ok, we got that out of the way. We then turned to the baskets. This was extremely easy as well, with nine baskets already spoken for. Four of them coming from the different branches of the legion, one from the lions club in town, and a few private donations.

So, now we have baskets and a ton of land to work with. We also have a handful of legion members chomping at the bit to get out back with chainsaws. Seriously, they ask me about it every time I see them. We also have access to chippers, pole saws, and other fun stuff.

Now lets get into why this makes sense at the legion. First of all, it's a beautiful facility with horseshoe pits, a pavilion, parking, and an outdoor bar. The local little league field is also on the property. That alone should create some serious exposure for the youth. Not to mention, fellow winchie Chris Leblanc is a PE teacher at the high school and does a segment on disc golf every semester. They actually have 9 portable baskets and the kids love it.

Best of all, the legion wants to make it a free public course. They feel providing a service to the community (and maybe snagging a few new members) is reason enough. Also, if you're a member of any legion, you can visit the members lounge...$2 draft and cheap mixed drinks! If you're not a member...JOIN! If you were not in the service, you can join under your father, grandfather, etc...

Dan and Titan walked the course yesterday and design for an initial 9 hole "A&B" course is in the works. Once we get that laid out, we will do a quick walk with the some of the legion members for final approval and start cutting. Once actual work starts, I will let everybody know.

I know I've mentioned this to a ton of you over the last year, but wanted to put it up here now that it's finally coming to fruition.

Here is a general idea of what we are working with. The arrow indicates the likely starting point.

Start near the batting cages on the right. have the first tee next to the containers and then finish in the woods. The last basket could be near the pavilion.

The area over near the cages is pretty rough...tons of giant uprooted stumps from when they logged about 10 years back, plus it gets wet over that side in the spring.

Hoping to get out there on Thursday to start marking some holes off. Once we get that done we can let the chainsaw slinging rednecks loose

blue=trails

green&red=rough 1st hole depictions

as the course will be 9 holes 2 tee locations tentatively

make sense?

Let's not get carried away here...the first thing we need to worry about is signs and a rule board. Gonna be tough trying to fit all the rules in a pop up book :D

Winchendon is special, no doubt. Just the other day I saw a truck for sale. This was the sign...

FOR SALE: $2,500 or best offer. Will take $2,000.

Naturally, I gave him $2,450.

Productive woods time last night. Lots of potential for some pretty sweet shots.

Decided to walk it at least every Thursday until we have the final layout in place.

Once everything is marked off, it should really move. Getting people out there to cut/clean is gonna be a piece of cake.

8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
