World War I Park, North Attleboro
There is talk by the rec department of putting in a course in North Attleboro at the town park near the YMCA. the guys name is Steve Carvalho. I met with him a while ago and now I am back to exchanging emails with him. He seems open to ideas and is definately looking for people to help. I am not sure where it will lead but I would like to get some disc golfers who have designed courses before to help me lead this in the right direction.

Is this walk thru open to anyone? I'd love to join and help out. Besides, having a potential course literally in my back yard is very exciting.

No, at this point. WE will have to get creative. I think they will apply for grants and such. maybe a tournament fundraiser. The group also talked about hitting up local business to sponsor holes, etc.

Its okay, I'm happy they are to ideas for a DG course.
Where exactly is the land that could potentially used for the course?
I imagine around the old ski hill area thru the woods towards the supply building, then a walk up the sledding hil and thrughout the wooded land parallel the open field? The field is a great place to stretch your arm also

I think there is enough land. Prob won't have super long holes but it won't be pitch and putt either. I can meet up with you soon.Text me your schedule and maybe we can meet up.

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
I saw this last year when it first got posted and was psyched because that's 5 min from where my girlfriend lives. Thrilled to see this is picking momentum back up. Its pretty hard for me to make it out during the week, but if any work days/walk throughs take place during the weekend I'd love to help.
Thanks for getting this moving again Jay! You did an amazing job with Dacey. Can't wait to see what ideas you have for this.

That's great Sam! It sure would be great for the area! Big props to jay for revitalizing this. WW1 has great potential - it's a unique spot with elevation that is not seen at Borderlands or even dacey. I am psyched for the possibility. Financing this is still going to be an issue but I say again that I plan to put up the $ for the first basket when the time comes!

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
Financing will be an issue as North Attleboro as limited financial resources to contribute to the project. I'm expecting to have to solicit hole sponsors, apply for grants, run a fundraising tournament or two, and even seek personal donations. Chainstars run about 6k for a set of 19, so figure about $400 if you want to buy a basket as a donation. All $ on top of actual basket will be put towards other basket necessaries (rebar, concrete, locks, etc). Donations are tax deductible as well! Along with Pete, I'm planning to donate a basket to the cause. Other generous offers of basket purchasing will be happily accepted.
I have about a dozen bucket baskets to place out there once the time comes. I also plan to approach Franklin Rec about donating any unused tee pad material to NA. If that works out, we should have almost 9 tees worth of material right there.
I just completed the construction estimate for 36 tees at Dacey, which came out to almost 11k. Mind you we are planning some DIESEL tees for Dacey, so with a few tweaks I should be able to get cost for pads down to about 6k for 36 tees for NA.
I need a few weeks to finish the written plan and proposal NA Rec would like to see. Hopefully after addressing whatever concerns may come up we're working out there in about 6-8 weeks. No promises yet though.

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
I've been tied up designing and permitting some major work at Dacey this summer, along with moving recently (my computer isn't even set up at home right now), so the written proposal and map work I need to do have progressed slowly.
If I can get help with a few things it should speed the process up. I have GPS data for a proposed layout that Pete, Chris, and I did last summer, but I need info on existing trails at the park to complete the map. If there is a local that can collect this data it would be really helpful. To do mapping work I use my iPhone with an app called MotionX GPS. It's about $3 and its great for tracking and mapping outdoor activities.
So, if there is a local with an iPhone that can handle this work for me I would greatly appreciate it. PM me if you can handle this and I can explain in greater detail.
I anticipate being able to complete the proposal this fall, so most likely work kicking off in the spring. For this project to succeed people are really going to need to step up. I won't be able to throw the same time at this as I did at Dacey last year because I still have some major work at Dacey to deal with and I'll have to split my time between both projects.
I think we should look at a goal of getting 9 good holes in out there next year.

Big meeting coming up with the North Attleboro Recreation Department to discuss the proposal. Initial goal is to install a 9-hole loop in 2014, with 9 additional holes to follow in 2015. Hopefully more details soon.

Proposal is in the hands of the North Attleboro Recreation Director. He will be reviewing it with the North Attleboro Recreation Commission in the upcoming weeks. If you're working on a course proposal and would like a copy, or if you're just interested in reading it, PM me and I'll get it to you.
On to course #3 and #4. It never stops.

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
Jay and I met with the recreation director of North Attleboro and his advisory board tonight with positive results. The meeting went very well and they have asked us to flag fairways for an initial 9 hole course (hopefully leaving the door open for another 9 later). This layout would have 2 tees per hole

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
Two things need to be accomplished before work can start. The first is to flag the course and have it approved by the North Attleboro Rec Director. Second is permitting. Permitting will dictate the start of work. Based on a project schedule we put together, it looks like work will start sometime around mid to late June.

Re: World War I Park, North Attleboro
Course has been flagged. Pretty cool layout if I can say so myself. The updated map will be up on the FB page later.
The plan is to put in 9 holes this year, and if everything goes well, 9 next year.
The necessary permits have been prepared and will be reviewed by the relevant agencies over the next month. Pete and I have a few meetings and site walks to attend with some official types, but as long as all goes well it looks like we will be starting work the first weekend of May.
Ready your chainsaws and your loppers! Ready your weedwackers and brush cutters! DG is coming to North Attleboro this spring.
