Check out Martin Dewgarita profile ..........he's played 1120 courses. That's 24% of US courses and 19.7% of the courses in the world.

do the catskill and adk still offer semi strong tourist traffic..or are they all faded from glory like the mohawk trail now is..? sad if they are but maybe some business that is hanging on might find some value in DG..

I imagine the land is super restrictive as well though throughout those 2 regions in regards to State regulations

SVT IMO might help Nefa Western Ma,DisCap,SNH and some parts of central MA...if it is OBV that northern VT doesn't go down that much..prob true that SVT doesn't go up to much...I bet many SVT'ers would explore above mentioned...

So IMO SVT,Manchester NH,CT RT 44/7 are the most crucial

edit...maybe if anyone approaches these areas a map like this will help them realize they are the ones missing out

Tough to sell it for primarily tourist use.
For a course to succeed you need a solid group of locals to start with.

As I had mentioned in a thread a couple of years ago, disc golf is a "semi-urban" sport. By this I mean that it can't be predominantly "inner city" (due to lack of available land) but won't be totally rural (as there won't be enough people to support the course, and bears and wolverines don't design good courses). In CT, and somewhat also in MA, the courses are just outside the major population centers and along major thoroughfares. Rt15 / I-95 belt to I-91 and continuing up I-84 are where virtually all of CT's are. Eventually a course will spring up in Canaan or Colchester, CT or Worthington, MA, etc (and all the other spots that are in God's country) but who - except for a day-tripper - would drive an additional hour to play when there are already some good courses much closer? I believe things will continue to be this way. It really comes down to the number of courses PER CAPITA (in a certain "comfortable travel radius") that are probably a better indication of where course are / will be. Land, in and by itself, don't produce courses - players do - so you have to have the player base to make other courses. And to have players you have to have a course! In this case of "What came first, the chicken or the egg?", I believe A course is needed...then watch the other courses spring up! It's sort of like Rosa multiflora...but in a good way.

How about Boston? The Capital of New England. High population. High impact for growing the sport. While it is going to be a long and hard sell (like the San Francisco DG Club), I think there is the land and demand to support a high caliber course.

Boston added the $250 fine for cig smoking on all their public parks...they could crush fines via a DG course..or maybe it would be the cig freest course around

edit..I agree Karl with that fine line on population...I just think in those semi rural areas they(citizens) often benefit the most from a DG course as it is only thing around to do...in turn since it is only thing it gets often more pop then one in a mjor city..that is just another thang to do

wouldn't it be cool to identify some Dead Zones...then we as a DG community via Nefa sent out emails to PTB in respective DGDZ...

tell them Nefa is running a contest to further promote DG...they are in competition with X other DGDZ's....they find the land...winner of the contest get a course paid for and installed...

or something along those lines..people love contest..even ones they didn't enter themselves in...lol

in general a contest giving a course away might even be better then a grant program

people like contest more then grants IMO...

expect a thread in the near future to discuss a Nefa course contest program...lol but serious

and yes I have nothing else to do...lol

Here's what Southern NH looks like. If you focus on the Everett Turnpike from Nashua to Concord, you get a massive population and zero disc golf. We have Muldoon Park in Pelham, but that's a bit off the beaten path, away from the population center.

The turnpike directly serves the following cities and towns: Nashua (86,933), Merrimack (25,119), Bedford (18,274), Manchester (110,209), Hooksett (11,721), Bow (7,138) and Concord (42,630). That's a total of 302,024 which is about 22% of the entire state. The only "course" along this stretch is a small field in Nashua with 9 handmade tire and chain baskets.

There is some good news. Nat Fairbanks is on the subcommittee for Grater Woods (in Merrimack) and is pushing for inclusion of disc golf in the plan for that land. But that's still in the early planning stages. You can also see on the map that we now have a store dedicated to disc golf in Hooksett. It's not a course, but it at least helps bring more of a DG presence to the area.

Agreed Titan. I used to work in Wlatham and I have been dreaming about that property for years.

That being said, I'll go ahead and prepare a letter to open communications with the necessary groups and municipal contacts.

This ties in closely with something I've been speaking with a few other NEFA regulars about. Within our dg community we have many people who's professional skills (engineers, conservation professionals, arborists, recreation professionals) lend very nicely to disc golf course design and construction. Essentially, we have a dg course design-build firm within NEFA. Much like design firms put out statements of qualifications with resumes of key players, NEFA could approach course design in a similar fashion. Put together a project team consisting of individuals with the skills listed above and a dger who is a resident of the target community and we're off to the races.

I'll reach out these folks sometime next week. This is a huge opportunity for us. Excellent location 5 mins off 128. Let's get it done.

The perfect example for Waltham's Prospect Hill effort is Worcester's Newton Hill.

well newton does still have issues with rift raft..but might be good if team newton organizes thoughts into some formal writing on the awesome things you all do to counteract those rift raft acts...and of course an archive of work history from pre green light till now..might not be bad idea to gather as well..then repeat as each one goes in the ground on Rift Raft Islands and then all RiftRaft Islands will fall to the DG Pirates

im working on an unofficial object/tree course for us disc junkies who just cant seem to get off of cape ann--
@gloucester's stage fort park.
some tree shots, some open shots, a top of the world bomber, so far i have a few holes figured out for sure....
its a busy park but there's times when i'm the only person there and have gotten my disc fix this way... just like when i was a little kid.
